| 1 Guai a quelli che compongono la malvagia legge, e quelli che scrivono le ingiustizie, | 1 Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression, |
| 2 per costringere nel giudicio li poveri, e facciano forza di pianto delli umili del mio populo, acciò che le vedove fussono loro preda, e rubassono li pupilli. | 2 to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! |
| 3 Or che farete nel dì della visitazione e della miseria che verrà dalla lunga? e a cui adiutorio fuggirete? e dove lascerete la vostra gloria? | 3 What will you do on the day of punishment, in the storm which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth? |
| 4 Non vi piegate sotto lo legame, però che voi caggerete con li morti di coltello. E sopra tutte queste cose non si rivolse il suo furore (cioè per tutte queste cose), ma la sua mano è distesa ancora. | 4 Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away and his hand is stretched out still. |
| 5 Guai a te, Assur! verga del mio furore e bastone egli è; nella loro mano la mia indignazione. | 5 Ah, Assyria, the rod of my anger, the staff of my fury! |
| 6 Io manderò lui alla gente fallace; e contro al popolo del mio furore io comanderò a lui, che toglia e spogli e divida la preda, e ponga quello in conculcazione come lo luto delle piazze. | 6 Against a godless nation I send him, and against the people of my wrath I command him, to take spoil and seize plunder, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. |
| 7 Ma egli non si penserà così, e lo cuore suo non penserà così; e lo suo cuore sarà a fracassare, e ad uccidimento di genti non poche. | 7 But he does not so intend, and his mind does not so think; but it is in his mind to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few; |
| 8 [Perciò che dirà]: | 8 for he says: "Are not my commanders all kings? |
| 9 or non sono li miei principi insieme re? or non come Carcamis, così è Calano? e come Arfad, e così è Emat? (Tutti questi sono nomi di cittadi) or non come Damasco, così è Samaria? | 9 Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus? |
| 10 Come trovò la mia mano li regni delli idoli, così trovarò le loro idolatrie di Ierusalem e di Samaria. | 10 As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols whose graven images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria, |
| 11 Or non farò io così alle statue di Ierusalem, come feci alli idoli di Samaria? | 11 shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her images?" |
| 12 E sarà; quando lo Signore averà compiuto nel monte di Sion e in Ierusalem tutte le sue opere, visiterò sopra lo frutto dello magnifico cuore dello re d' Assur, e sopra la gloria della grandezza de' suoi occhi. | 12 When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem he will punish the arrogant boasting of the king of Assyria and his haughty pride. |
| 13 E disse: nella fortezza della mia mano io hoe fatto, e intesi nella mia sapienza; e tolsi i termini de' popoli, e li loro principi hoe rubato, e trassi fuori come potente (nella mia sedia) coloro che credeano regnare. | 13 For he says: "By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding; I have removed the boundaries of peoples, and have plundered their treasures; like a bull I have brought down those who sat on thrones. |
| 14 E trovò la mia mano la fortezza de' popoli, come si trovano i polli nel nido (che non si possono difendere); e sì come si ricolgono l' uova le quali sono abbandonate, così radunai tutta la terra; e non fue chi muovesse una penna, e aprisse la bocca e gracchiasse. | 14 My hand has found like a nest the wealth of the peoples; and as men gather eggs that have been forsaken so I have gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved a wing, or opened the mouth, or chirped." |
| 15 Or (non) averà la scure gloria contro quello che (sega e) taglia con essa? ed esalterassi la sega contro a colui lo qual la mena? come si leva la verga contro a colui che la leva, e la mazza si è esaltata, la qual è legno. | 15 Shall the axe vaunt itself over him who hews with it, or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield him who lifts it, or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood! |
| 16 E però manderà lo Signore delli eserciti nelli suoi grassi la magrezza; e l'arsione arderà sotto la sua sedia accesa. | 16 Therefore the Lord, the LORD of hosts, will send wasting sickness among his stout warriors, and under his glory a burning will be kindled, like the burning of fire. |
| 17 E Israel sarà lume nel fuoco, e lo suo Santo nella fiamma; e la spina sua sarà accesa, e saranno divorati i suoi pruni in uno die. | 17 The light of Israel will become a fire, and his Holy One a flame; and it will burn and devour his thorns and briers in one day. |
| 18 E la gloria del suo bosco e di Carmelo (cid è uno monte) dall' anima insino alla carne sarà consumata, e sarà fuggitivo per ispaventamento. | 18 The glory of his forest and of his fruitful land the LORD will destroy, both soul and body, and it will be as when a sick man wastes away. |
| 19 E li rimasugli de' legni dello bosco suo saranno numerati per la loro povertà, e uno fanciullo sì li scriverà. | 19 The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few that a child can write them down. |
| 20 E sarà in quel dì, che non aggiugnerà rimanente ad Israel, e a quelli che saranno fuggiti della casa di Iacob, a confidarsi sopra colui il quale li percuote; ma si confiderà sopra lo Signore santo d'Israel nella verità. | 20 In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean upon him that smote them, but will lean upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. |
| 21 Le reliquie si convertiranno, dico quelle di Iacob, allo Signore forte. | 21 A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. |
| 22 E se il tuo popolo d' Israel sarà come la rena del mare, lo rimanente si convertirà di quello; la consumazione abbreviata farà abondare la giustizia. | 22 For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness. |
| 23 Lo Signore delli eserciti farà la consumazione e la breviazione nel mezzo della terra. | 23 For the Lord, the LORD of hosts, will make a full end, as decreed, in the midst of all the earth. |
| 24 E perciò dice lo Signore delli eserciti: non temere, popolo mio, tu abitatore di Sion, di Assur; egli percoterà te nella verga, e alzerà la sua bacchetta sopra te nella via di Egitto. | 24 Therefore thus says the Lord, the LORD of hosts: "O my people, who dwell in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrians when they smite with the rod and lift up their staff against you as the Egyptians did. |
| 25 Ancora stando uno poco, e la mia indignazione e lo mio furore sarà compiuto sopra le fellonie loro. | 25 For in a very little while my indignation will come to an end, and my anger will be directed to their destruction. |
| 26 E resusciterà lo Signore delli eserciti sopra lui la battitura secondo la piaga di Madian nella pietra di Oreb, e la sua verga sopra lo mare, e leveralla nella via di Egitto. | 26 And the LORD of hosts will wield against them a scourge, as when he smote Midian at the rock of Oreb; and his rod will be over the sea, and he will lift it as he did in Egypt. |
| 27 E in quello dì sarà tolto il suo carico dello tuo omero, e lo suo giogo del tuo collo, e fraciderà lo giogo dalla faccia dell' olio. | 27 And in that day his burden will depart from your shoulder, and his yoke will be destroyed from your neck." He has gone up from Rimmon, |
| 28 Verrà in Aiat, e passerà per Magron; a lato a Macmas raccomanderà li suoi vasi. | 28 he has come to Aiath; he has passed through Migron, at Michmash he stores his baggage; |
| 29 E passarono per corso, (e dissono:) Gabaa è nostra sedia; Rama si maravigliò, e Gabaa di Saul fuggio. | 29 they have crossed over the pass, at Geba they lodge for the night; Ramah trembles, Gibe-ah of Saul has fled. |
| 30 E però piagni con la tua voce, o tu figliuola di Gallim; attendi (cioè ascolta), Laisa, e tu poverella Anatot; (tutti questi sono nomi di terre, se non se Saul che fu uno uomo). | 30 Cry aloud, O daughter of Gallim! Hearken, O Laishah! Answer her, O Anathoth! |
| 31 Medemena passò e fuggì; però, abitatori di Gabim, confortatevi. | 31 Madmenah is in flight, the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety. |
| 32 Ancora è il dì (grande) che potremo andare in Nobe; moverà la sua mano sopra lo monte della figliuola di Sion, lo colle di Ierusalem. | 32 This very day he will halt at Nob, he will shake his fist at the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. |
| 33 Ecco lo signoreggiatore Signore delli eserciti romperà la bariletta in spavento, e quelli che sono lunghi per istatura saranno tagliati, e i levati in alto saranno umiliati. | 33 Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts will lop the boughs with terrifying power; the great in height will be hewn down, and the lofty will be brought low. |
| 34 E le cose condense del bosco saranno rivolte sotto sopra col ferro; e lo Libano cadrà colle sue alte cose. | 34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an axe, and Lebanon with its majestic trees will fall. |
