BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Partitosi adunque Jacob venne alla terra orientale.	1 Continuing his journey, Jacob reached the Land of the Easterners.
2 E vidde nel campo uno pozzo, e tre greggie di pecore iacenti appresso lui; e certamente di quello pozzo s' abbeveravano le bestie, e la bocca del pozzo con grande pietra si chiudeva.	2 And there, out in the open, he saw a well with three flocks of sheep lying beside it; this wel was usedfor watering the flocks. Now the stone on the mouth of the wel was a large one,
3 E di costume era, che tutte le pecore raunavano i pastori, e vuolgeano la pietra (ad abbeverare le bestie delle greggie); e bevuto le bestie, anche la pietra sopra la bocca del pozzo la riponeano.	3 and only when al the flocks had collected there, did they rol the stone off the mouth of the wel andwater the sheep; then they would replace the stone over the mouth of the wel .
4 E disse ai pastori: fratelli, onde site? Li quali rispuosero, e dissero: da Aran.	4 Jacob said to the shepherds, 'Friends, where are you from?' They replied, 'We are from Haran.'
5 I quali domandando disse: conoscete voi Laban, figliuolo di Nacor? Ed eglino dissero: sì cognosciamo.	5 He asked them, 'Do you know Laban son of Nahor?' They replied, 'We do.'
6 Ed egli disse: è egli sano? E'dissero di sì; ed ecco Rachel, sua figliuola, che viene colla greggia sua.	6 Then he asked them, 'Is he wel ?' 'He is,' they replied, 'and here comes his daughter Rachel with theflock.'
7 E disse Jacob: ancora è molto del die, e non è tempo che si reduchino le greggie; innanzi date bere alle pecore, e così al pasto reducete loro.	7 Then he said, 'But it is stil broad daylight, not the time to round up the animals. Why don't you waterthe sheep and take them back to graze?'
8 I quali rispuosero: noi non possiamo, insino che tutte le bestie non sono raunate, e rimoveremo la pietra della bocca del pozzo, acciò che noi adacqueamo le greggie.	8 To which, they replied, 'We can't, until al the shepherds have assembled to rol the stone off themouth of the well; then we can water the sheep.'
9 Ancora favellavano (e dicevano certe cose intra loro); ed ecco Rachel venia colle pecore del padre suo; imperciò ch' ella pasceva la greggia.	9 He was stil talking to them, when Rachel arrived with her father's flock, for she was a shepherdess.
10 La quale quando la vidde Jacob, e savea ch' ella era sua consobrina, e le pecore erano di Laban suo avolo, rimosse la pietra colla quale lo pozzo si chiudea.	10 As soon as Jacob saw Rachel, his uncle Laban's daughter, with his uncle Laban's flock, he went upand, rolling the stone off the mouth of the wel , watered his uncle Laban's sheep.
11 Ed acquata la greggia, sì la basciò; e levata la voce, pianse.	11 Jacob then kissed Rachel and burst into tears.
12 E disse a lei, ch' egli era fratello del padre suo, e figliuolo di Rebecca. Ed ella, affrettantesi, nun ciollo al padre suo.	12 He told Rachel he was her father's kinsman and Rebekah's son, and she ran to tel her father.
13 Lo quale, quando udì che Jacob figliuolo della sorella sua venia, corse a lui incontro; abbracciollo, e abbracciato lui, lo basciò, e menollo nella casa sua; e udita la cagione dell' avvenimento,	13 As soon as he heard her speak of his sister's son Jacob, Laban ran to greet him, embraced him,kissed him and took him to his house. Jacob told Laban everything that had happened,
14 rispuose: bocca mia, e carne mia! E poscia che furono compiuti i dì d'uno mese,	14 and Laban said to him, 'You are indeed my bone and flesh!' After Jacob had been staying with himfor a month,
15 disse a lui: in verità, per ciò che tu se' mio fratello, grazievolmente servirai a me? Dimmi, che mercè torrai.	15 Laban said to Jacob, 'Just because you are my kinsman, why should you work for me for nothing?Tel me what wages you want.'
16 In verità egli avea due figliuole; lo nome della maggiore Lia era appellata, e la minore era appellata Rachel.	16 Now Laban had two daughters, the elder named Leah, and the younger Rachel.
17 Ma Lia avea lacrimanti gli occhii; e Rachel era bellissima, in la faccia venusta, e di bello aspetto.	17 Leah had lovely eyes, but Rachel was shapely and beautiful,
18 E in verità quella amava Jacob, e disse: io servirà te per Rachel, tua figliuola minore, sette anni,	18 and Jacob had fallen in love with Rachel. So his answer was, 'I shal work for you for seven years inexchange for your younger daughter Rachel.'
19 Rispuose Laban: meglio è ch' io te la dia a te, che ad altro uomo; sta con esso meco.	19 Laban replied, 'It is better for me to give her to you than to a stranger; stay with me.'
20 Adunque servitte Jacob per Rachel sette anni; e parvegli a lui pochi dì, per la grandezza dell' amore.	20 So Jacob worked for seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him like a few days because heloved her so much.
21 E disse a Laban: dammi la moglie mia, im perciò che lo tempo è compiuto, acciò ch' io vada a lei.	21 Then Jacob said to Laban, 'Give me my wife, for my time is up and I should like to go to her.'
22 Il quale, chiamati molti popoli delli amici al convito, fece le nozze.	22 Laban gathered al the people of the place together, and gave a banquet.
23 E nel vespro la sua figliuola Lia menò a lui,	23 But when night came, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and he slept with her.
24 dandogli l'ancilla alla figliuola: Zelfa avea nome. Alla quale, conciosia cosa che per usanza fosse andato Jacob, fatta la mattina, vide Lia.	24 (Laban gave his slave-girl Zilpah to his daughter Leah as her slave.)
25 E disse al suocero suo: che è questo che tu hae voluto fare? non ti servii io per Rachel? e per chè mi desti Lia?	25 When morning came, it was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, 'What have you done to me? Did I notwork for you for Rachel? Why then have you tricked me?'
26 Rispuose Laban: non è nel luogo nostro usanza, che le minori noi dagiamo, innanzi alle maggiori, alle nozze.	26 Laban replied, 'It is not the custom in our place to marry off the younger before the elder.
27 Empi la settimana di dì di questa che t'è congiunta; e in verità quest' altra, per lo lavoro che tu mi servirai, darò a te; per la quale tu ser virai a me altri sette anni.	27 Finish this marriage week and I shal give you the other one too in return for your working for me foranother seven years.'
28 A questo consentì volentieri; e trapassata la settimana, menò Rachel per moglie.	28 Jacob agreed and, when he had finished the week, Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as his wife.
29 Alla quale lo padre avea data la sua serva Balam.	29 (Laban gave his slave-girl Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her slave.)
30 E alla fine maggiormente desiderate le nozze, antepose l'amore della seguente (cioè di Rachel) alla prima (cioè a Lia); e servì a lui altri sette anni.	30 So Jacob slept with Rachel too, and he loved Rachel more than Leah. He worked for Laban foranother seven years.
31 E vedendo lo Signore, che Lia gli dispiacea, apersele la vulva, la sorella stando sterile.	31 When Yahweh saw that Leah was unloved, he opened her womb, while Rachel remained barren.
32 La quale, conceputo, generò uno figliuolo; e chiamò lo nome suo Ruben, dicendo: vide lo Signore la umilità mia; adesso amerammi lo marito mio.	32 Leah conceived and gave birth to a son whom she named Reuben, meaning 'Yahweh has seen mymisery'; and she said, 'Now my husband will love me.'
33 E un' altra volta concepette, e partorì uno figliuolo, e disse: imperciò che udì me il Signore, ch' io avessi conceputo, dièdemi ancora questo altro; e fu chiamato lo nome suo Simeon.	33 Conceiving again, she gave birth to a son and said, 'Yahweh heard that I was unloved, and so hehas given me this one too'; and she named him Simeon.
34 E concepette la terza volta, e generò un altro figliuolo, e disse: ora in verità s'accosterà a me lo marito mio, perciò ch' io gli ho partorito tre figliuoli; ed imperciò chiamò lo nome suo Levi.	34 Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, 'This time my husband wil become attachedto me, because I have borne him three sons.' Accordingly, she named him Levi.
35 La quarta volta concepette, e partorì figliuolo, e disse: ora confesseroe al Signore; e chiamò lui Iuda, e cessò di partorire.	35 Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, 'Now I shal praise Yahweh!' Accordingly, shenamed him Judah. Then she had no more children.
