| 2 e con lui vi era anche Lisia, suo tutore e ministro, avendo ciascuno un esercito greco di centodiecimila fanti, cinquemilatrecento cavalieri, ventidue elefanti e trecento carri falcati. | 2 and with him Lysias, his guardian, who had charge of the government. Each of them had a Greek force of one hundred and ten thousand infantry, five thousand three hundred cavalry, twenty-two elephants, and three hundred chariots armed with scythes. |
| 3 Si era unito a loro anche Menelao, il quale stimolava Antioco con grande furberia, non per la salvezza della patria, ma sperando di riottenere il potere. | 3 Menelaus also joined them and with utter hypocrisy urged Antiochus on, not for the sake of his country's welfare, but because he thought that he would be established in office. |
| 4 Il Re dei re, però, eccitò lo sdegno di Antioco contro questo scellerato, poiché, avendogli Lisia dimostrato che era la causa di tutti i mali, egli ordinò di condurlo a Berèa e di farlo perire come si usa in quel luogo. | 4 But the King of kings aroused the anger of Antiochus against the scoundrel; and when Lysias informed him that this man was to blame for all the trouble, he ordered them to take him to Beroea and to put him to death by the method which is the custom in that place. |
| 5 Vi è, infatti, in quel luogo, una torre di cinquanta cubiti, piena di cenere e munita di una macchina ruotante, che da ogni parte fa cadere a precipizio sulla cenere. | 5 For there is a tower in that place, fifty cubits high, full of ashes, and it has a rim running around it which on all sides inclines precipitously into the ashes. |
| 6 Dall'alto, chi è colpevole di furto sacrilego o ha raggiunto il colmo di certi altri delitti, tutti lo spingono verso la rovina. | 6 There they all push to destruction any man guilty of sacrilege or notorious for other crimes. |
| 7 Con tale sorte accadde di morire all'iniquo Menelao, senza avere neppure la sepoltura. | 7 By such a fate it came about that Menelaus the lawbreaker died, without even burial in the earth. |
| 8 E molto giustamente, poiché dopo aver compiuto molti delitti contro l'altare, il cui fuoco è puro al pari della cenere, nella cenere trovò la morte. | 8 And this was eminently just; because he had committed many sins against the altar whose fire and ashes were holy, he met his death in ashes. |
| 9 Il re, dunque, pieno di feroci sentimenti, veniva per mostrare ai Giudei cose peggiori di quelle accadute sotto suo padre. | 9 The king with barbarous arrogance was coming to show the Jews things far worse than those that had been done in his father's time. |
| 10 Appreso ciò, Giuda diede ordine alla moltitudine d'invocare giorno e notte il Signore affinché, come altre volte, così anche ora venisse in soccorso di coloro che stavano per essere privati della legge, della patria e del santo tempio, | 10 But when Judas heard of this, he ordered the people to call upon the Lord day and night, now if ever to help those who were on the point of being deprived of the law and their country and the holy temple, |
| 11 e non permettesse che il popolo, che da poco aveva ripreso animo, cadesse nelle mani degli infami gentili. | 11 and not to let the people who had just begun to revive fall into the hands of the blasphemous Gentiles. |
| 12 Quando tutti insieme ebbero fatto ciò, implorando il Signore misericordioso per tre giorni ininterrotti, con lamenti, digiuni e prostrazioni, Giuda tenne loro un'esortazione e comandò di star preparati. | 12 When they had all joined in the same petition and had besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying prostrate for three days without ceasing, Judas exhorted them and ordered them to stand ready. |
| 13 Quindi, incontratosi da solo con gli anziani, fu deciso di uscire per regolare l'affare con l'aiuto di Dio, prima che l'esercito del re invadesse la Giudea e si impadronisse della città. | 13 After consulting privately with the elders, he determined to march out and decide the matter by the help of God before the king's army could enter Judea and get possession of the city. |
| 14 Perciò, affidata la protezione dell'impresa al Creatore del mondo ed esortati i suoi uomini a lottare eroicamente fino alla morte per le leggi, il tempio, la città, la patria e le istituzioni, fece porre l'accampamento nei pressi di Modin. | 14 So, committing the decision to the Creator of the world and exhorting his men to fight nobly to the death for the laws, temple, city, country, and commonwealth, he pitched his camp near Modein. |
| 15 Data ai suoi la parola d'ordine: "Vittoria di Dio", con alcuni giovani scelti tra i migliori, piombò di notte sulla tenda del re e sull'accampamento, uccise duemila uomini e trafisse il più grosso degli elefanti con il suo guidatore. | 15 He gave his men the watchword, "God's victory," and with a picked force of the bravest young men, he attacked the king's pavilion at night and slew as many as two thousand men in the camp. He stabbed the leading elephant and its rider. |
| 16 Alla fine, riempito l'accampamento di spavento e di confusione, si ritirarono con pieno successo. | 16 In the end they filled the camp with terror and confusion and withdrew in triumph. |
| 17 Appariva già il giorno, quando la cosa fu compiuta con la protezione del Signore che aveva soccorso Giuda. | 17 This happened, just as day was dawning, because the Lord's help protected him. |
| 18 Allora il re, avendo avuto un saggio dell'audacia dei Giudei, tentò di occupare quei luoghi con stratagemmi. | 18 The king, having had a taste of the daring of the Jews, tried strategy in attacking their positions. |
| 19 Marciò contro Bet-Zur, piazza fortificata dei Giudei; ma fu respinto, ostacolato e battuto, | 19 He advanced against Beth-zur, a strong fortress of the Jews, was turned back, attacked again, and was defeated. |
| 20 poiché Giuda riuscì a far pervenire agli assediati il necessario. | 20 Judas sent in to the garrison whatever was necessary. |
| 21 Un certo Rodoco, delle file dei Giudei, aveva comunicato ai nemici i segreti dell'esercito giudaico. Fu perciò ricercato, catturato e tolto di mezzo. | 21 But Rhodocus, a man from the ranks of the Jews, gave secret information to the enemy; he was sought for, caught, and put in prison. |
| 22 Il re trattò per la seconda volta con gli uomini di Bet-Zur, diede loro la destra in segno di pace, la ricevette e andò via. Attaccò gli uomini di Giuda, ma ebbe la peggio. | 22 The king negotiated a second time with the people in Beth-zur, gave pledges, received theirs, withdrew, attacked Judas and his men, was defeated |
| 23 Venne poi a sapere che in Antiochia Filippo, lasciato a capo degli affari, si era ribellato. Costernato, convocò i Giudei, si sottomise, giurò su tutto ciò che era giusto, si riconciliò, offrì un sacrificio, onorò il tempio e fu generoso con il luogo santo. | 23 he got word that Philip, who had been left in charge of the government, had revolted in Antioch; he was dismayed, called in the Jews, yielded and swore to observe all their rights, settled with them and offered sacrifice, honored the sanctuary and showed generosity to the holy place. |
| 24 Poi salutò Giuda Maccabeo e lasciò Egemònide quale stratega da Tolemaide fino al paese dei Gerreni. | 24 He received Maccabeus, left Hegemonides as governor from Ptolemais to Gerar, |
| 25 Passò per Tolemaide; ma gli abitanti di Tolemaide erano irritati per gli accordi. Infatti erano preoccupati per le convenzioni e volevano respingerle. | 25 and went to Ptolemais. The people of Ptolemais were indignant over the treaty; in fact they were so angry that they wanted to annul its terms. |
| 26 Lisia però salì sulla tribuna, si difese come poté, li persuase, li calmò, se li rese favorevoli e partì per Antiochia. In questo modo andarono le cose circa la spedizione e la ritirata del re. | 26 Lysias took the public platform, made the best possible defense, convinced them, appeased them, gained their good will, and set out for Antioch. This is how the king's attack and withdrawal turned out. |
