And when king Hezekiah had heard this, he tore his garments, and he covered himself with sackcloth, and he entered the house of the Lord.1 O rei Ezequias, tendo ouvido isto, rasgou as suas vestes, cobriu-se de saco e entrou na casa do Senhor.
And he sent Eliakim, the first ruler of the house, and Shebnah, the scribe, and the elders from the priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah, the son of Amoz.2 E mandou Eliacim, mordomo-mór da sua casa, Sobna, secretário, e os mais velhos dos sacerdotes, cobertos de sacos, ao profeta Isaías, filho de Amós,
And they said to him: “Thus says Hezekiah: This day is a day of tribulation, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy. The sons are ready to be born, but the woman in labor does not have the strength.3 os quais lhe disseram: Eis o que diz Ezequias: Este dia é um dia de tribulação, de castigo e de opróbrio; os filhos chegaram ao ponto de nascer, porém a que está de parto não tem forças (para os dar à luz).
Perhaps the Lord, your God, may hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of the Assyrians, his lord, sent so that he would reproach the living God, and rebuke with words, which the Lord, your God, has heard. And so, offer a prayer on behalf of the remnant that has been found.”4 O Senhor teu Deus talvez tenha ouvido as palavras do copeiro-mór, a quem enviou o rei dos Assírios, seu amo, para blasfemar do Deus vivo, para o insultar com palavras, e talvez o vá punir pelas palavras que ouviu: faze, pois, oração ao Senhor por este resto que ainda subsiste.
And the servants of king Hezekiah went to Isaiah.5 Foram, pois, os servos do rei Ezequias ter com Isaías.
And Isaiah said to them: “So shall you say to your lord. Thus says the Lord: Do not be afraid before the face of the words that you have heard, by which the servants of the king of the Assyrians have blasphemed me.6 Isaías disse-lhes: Direis ao vosso Senhor o seguinte: Não temas essas palavras que ouviste, com as quais os servos do rei dos Assírios blasfemaram contra mim.
Behold, I will send a spirit to him, and he will hear a report, and he will return to his own land. And I will bring him down by the sword in his own land.”7 Eu vou enviar-lhe um espírito, e ele ouvirá uma nova, voltará para a sua terra, e eu o farei perecer à espada na sua terra.
Then Rabshakeh returned, and he found the king of the Assyrians fighting against Libnah. For he had heard that he had withdrawn from Lachish.8 Voltou o copeiro-mór e encontrou o rei dos Assírios sitiando Lobna, porque tinha sabido que (o seu senhor) se havia retirado de Laquis.
And when he had heard from Tirhakah, the king of Ethiopia, saying, “Behold, he has gone out so that he may fight against you,” and when he went forth against him, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying:9 (Senaquerib) ouviu dizer de Taraca, rei da Etiópia: Olha que ele saiu para pelejar contra ti. Então enviou novamente mensageiros a Ezequias, dizendo:
“So shall you say to Hezekiah, the king of Judah: Let not your God, in whom you trust, lead you astray. And you should not say, ‘Jerusalem will not be delivered into the hands of the king of the Assyrians.’10 Direis a Ezequias, rei de Judá: Vê, não te seduza o teu Deus, no qual tens confiança, nem digas: Jerusalém não será entregue nas mãos do rei dos Assírios.
For you yourself have heard what the kings of the Assyrians have done to all the lands, the manner in which they have laid waste to them. Therefore, how would you alone be able to be freed?11 Tu mesmo tens ouvido o que os reis dos Assírios fizeram a todas as terras e como as devastaram; tu só, pois, te poderás salvar?
Have the gods of the nations freed any of those whom my fathers have destroyed, such as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the sons of Eden, who were at Telassar?12 Porventura os deuses das gentes livraram os povos que meus pais devastaram, a saber: Gozan, Haran, Resef, e os filhos de Eden, que estavam em Telassar?
Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, and of Hena, and of Avva?”13 Que é feito do rei de Emat, do rei de Arfad, do rei da cidade de Sefarvaim, de Ana e de Ava?
And so, when Hezekiah had received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and had read it, he ascended to the house of the Lord, and he spread it out before the Lord.14 Ezequias, tendo recebido a carta da mão dos mensageiros e tendo-a lido, foi para a casa do Senhor, estendeu-a diante do Senhor
And he prayed in his sight, saying: “O Lord, God of Israel, who sits upon the cherubim, you alone are God, over all the kings of the earth. You made heaven and earth.15 e fez a sua oração diante dele, dizendo: Senhor Deus de Israel, que estás sentado sobre os querubins, só tu é que és o Deus de todos os reis da terra; tu fizeste o céu e a terra.
Incline your ear, and listen. Open your eyes, O Lord, and see. And hear all the words of Sennacherib, who sent so that he might reproach the living God before us.16 Inclina o teu ouvido e ouve; abre Senhor, os teus olhos e vê; ouve todas as palavras de Senaquerib, que mandou se blasfemasse diante de nós contra o Deus vivo.
Truly, O Lord, the kings of the Assyrians have devastated all peoples and lands.17 É verdade, Senhor, que os reis dos Assírios destruíram as gentes e todas as suas terras,
And they have cast their gods into the fire. For they were not gods, but instead were the works of men’s hands, out of wood and stone. And so they destroyed them.18 e lançaram os seus deuses no fogo, porém eles não eram deuses, mas obras das mãos dos homens, de pau e de pedra, e, por isso, foram destruídos.
Now therefore, O Lord our God, bring us salvation from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone are the Lord God.”19 Salva-nos, agora Senhor nosso Deus, dos suas mãos, para que todos os reinos da terra saibam que só tu és o Senhor Deus.
Then Isaiah, the son of Amoz, sent to Hezekiah, saying: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I have heard what you beseeched from me, concerning Sennacherib, the king of the Assyrians.20 Então Isaías, filho de Amós, mandou dizer a Ezequias: Eis o que diz o Senhor Deus de Israel: Eu ouvi a oração que tu me fizeste relativamente a Senaquerib, rei dos Assírios.
This is the word that the Lord has spoken about him: The virgin daughter of Zion has spurned and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head behind your back.21 Eis o que o Senhor disse dele: Ela te desprezou e te escarneceu, a virgem, filha de Sião; ela sacudiu a sua cabeça por detrás de ti, a filha de Jerusalém. A quem insultaste, contra quem blasfemaste? Contra quem levantaste a tua voz? A quem desafiaste com teus olhos? O Santo de Israel.
Whom have you reproached, and whom have you blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice, and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel!
By the hand of your servants, you have reproach the Lord, and you have said: ‘By the multitude of my chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the summit of Lebanon. And I have cut down its sublime cedars, and its elect spruce trees. And I have entered even to its limits.
I have cut down. And I drank foreign waters, and I dried up all the enclosed waters with the steps of my feet.’24 Cavei. E bebi águas estrangeiras, sequei com as plantas dos meus pés todos os rios do Egipto.
But have you not heard what I have done from the beginning? From the days of antiquity, I have formed it, and now I have brought it to be. And fortified cities of fighting men will become piles of ruins.25 Tu não ouviste dizer o que eu fiz desde o princípio? Desde os dias antigos eu formei este projecto, e agora o executo; as cidades fortes dos combatentes são um montão de ruínas.
And whoever may settle in these, they have trembled, with a weak hand, and they have been confounded. They have become like the hay of the field, and like weeds sprouting on the rooftops, which dry up before they reached maturity.26 Os que nelas habitam, ficando sem forças, atemorizam-se e confundem-se, tornam-se como o feno dos campos, como a erva verde dos telhados, que se seca antes de amadurecer.
Your habitation, and your exit, and your entrance, and your way, I knew beforehand, along with your fury against me.27 Eu previa tua habitação, a tua saída, a tua entrada e o teu caminho, conheço o teu furor contra mim.
You have been maddened against me, and your arrogance has ascended to my ears. And so, I will place a ring in your nose, and a bit between your lips. And I will lead you back along the way by which you came.28 Ficaste furioso contra mim, e a tua soberba subiu até aos meus ouvidos. Eu te porei pois o meu anel nos teus narizes, o meu freio nos teus lábios, e te farei voltar pelo caminho por onde vieste.
But as for you, Hezekiah, this shall be a sign: Eat this year whatever you will find, and in the second year, whatever may spring up of itself. But in the third year, sow and reap; plant vineyards, and eat from their fruit.29 Tu, porém, ó Ezequias, terás este sinal: Come neste ano o que encontrares, e no segundo ano o que nascer por si mesmo: mas no terceiro semeai e recolhei, plantai vinhas e comei os frutos delas.
And whatever will have been left behind, from the house of Judah, shall send a root downward, and shall bear fruit upward.30 O que ficar da casa de Judá, lançará raízes para baixo, e produzirá o seu fruto para cima.
Indeed, a remnant shall go forth from Jerusalem, and what may be saved shall go forth from mount Zion. The zeal of the Lord of hosts shall accomplish this.31 De Jerusalém sairão uns restos (de povo), e do monte de Sião sobreviventes. O zelo do Senhor dos exércitos fará isto.
For this reason, thus says the Lord about the king of the Assyrians: He shall not enter into this city, nor shoot an arrow into it, nor overtake it with the shield, nor encircle it with fortifications.32 Portanto, eis o que, do rei dos Assírios, diz o Senhor: Ele não entrará nesta cidade, nem despedirá nenhuma seta contra ela; não a cingirá de escudos, nem a cercará de trincheiras.
By the way that he came, so shall he return. And he shall not enter this city, says the Lord.33 Ele voltará pelo caminho por onde veio, e não entrará nesta cidade, diz o Senhor.
And I will protect this city, and I will save it for my own sake, and for the sake of my servant David.”34 Eu protegerei esta cidade e a salvarei por amor de mim e por amor do meu servo Davide.
And so it happened that, in the same night, an Angel of the Lord went and struck down, in the camp of the Assyrians, one hundred and eighty-five thousand. And when he had risen up, at first light, he saw all the bodies of the dead. And withdrawing, he went away.35 Naquela mesma noite, veio o anjo do Senhor e matou no campo dos Assírios cento e oitenta e cinco mil homens. Senaquerib, tendo-se levantado ao amanhecer, viu todos os corpos dos mortos, e, retirando-se, foi-se.
And Sennacherib, the king of the Assyrians, returned and dwelled in Nineveh.36 Senaquerib, rei dos Assírios, retirou-se e ficou em Ninive.
And while he was worshipping in the temple of his god, Nisroch, his sons, Adram-melech and Sharezer, struck him with the sword. And they fled into the land of the Armenians. And Esarhaddon, his son, reigned in his place.37 Enquanto, certo dia, adorava no templo o seu deus Nesroque, Adrameleque e Serasar, seus filhos, mataram-no com a espada e fugiram para a terra dos Arméaios. Seu filho Assaradão reinou em lugar dele.
