NEW JERUSALEM	Biblia Matos Soares
1 Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his whole army -- thirty-two kings were with him, and horses andchariots -- and marched on Samaria, to besiege it and take it by assault.	1 Benadad, rei da Síria, juntou todo o seu exército. Tinha com ele trinta e dois reis, cavalos e carros. Subindo, pelejou contra Samaria e sitiou-a.
2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel to tel him, 'Ben-Hadad says this,	2 Enviando mensageiros à cidade a Acab, rei de Israel,
3 "Your silver and gold are mine. Your wives and children remain yours." '	3 disse: Eis o que diz Benadad: A tua prata e o teu ouro são meus, as tuas mulheres e os teus filhos mais gentis são meus.
4 The king of Israel replied, 'As you command, my lord king. Myself and al I have are yours.'	4 O rei de Israel respondeu: Como tu dizes, ó meu rei meu senhor, eu sou teu, e todas as minhas coisas.
5 The messengers came again, this time they said, 'Ben-Hadad says this, "I have already sent you anorder to hand over your silver and your gold, your wives and your children;	5 Voltando os mensageiros, disseram: Eis o que diz Benadad, que nos enviou a ti: Tu me hás-de dar a tua prata e o teu ouro, as tuas mulheres e os teus filhos.
6 but I swear, this time tomorrow, I shal send my servants to ransack your house and your servants'houses and lay hands on everything that they value and take it away." '	6 Amanhã, pois, a esta mesma hora, te enviarei os meus servos, os quais revistarão a tua casa e a casa dos teus servos; eles tomarão com as suas mãos tudo o que lhes aprouver, e o levarão.
7 The king of Israel summoned al the elders of the country and said, 'You can see clearly how this manintends to ruin us. He has already demanded my wives and my children, although I have not refused him mysilver and gold.'	7 Chamou o rei de Israel todos os anciães do povo e disse: Considerai e vede que ele nos quer perder, porque me mandou mensageiros a pedir minhas mulheres e filhos, a prata e o ouro, e eu não recusei.
8 Al the elders and all the people said, 'Take no notice. Do not consent.'	8 Todos os anciães e todo o povo lhe responderam: Não lhe dês ouvidos, nem condescendas com ele.
9 So he gave this answer to Ben-Hadad's messengers, 'Say to my lord the king, "Al you first required ofyour servant I wil do, but this I cannot do." ' And the messengers went back with the answer.	9 Acab respondeu aos embaixadores de Benadad: Dizei ao rei, meu senhor: Farei todas as coisas que me mandaste pedir no princípio a mim, teu servo, mas esta (última) coisa não a posso fazer.
10 Ben-Hadad then sent him the following message, 'May the gods bring unnameable ills on me andworse il s too, if there is enough dust in Samaria for each of my fol owers to have a handful!'	10 Voltando os mensageiros referiram, a resposta a Benadad. Então ele tornou-os enviar a dizer: Os deuses me tratem com a maior severidade se o pó de Samaria bastar para encher a cova da mão de todo o povo que me segue.
11 But the king of Israel returned this answer, 'Say: the man who puts on his armour is not the one toboast, but the man who takes it off.'	11 O rei de Israel, respondendo, disse: Dizei-lhe que não cante vitória antes da batalha.
12 When Ben-Hadad heard this message -- he was under the awnings drinking with the kings -- he gaveorders to his servants, 'Take up position!' And they took up their positions against the city.	12 Ora sucedeu que, quando Benadad ouviu esta resposta, estava bebendo nas suas tendas com os reis; disse aos seus servos: Cercai a cidade, E eles cercaram-na.
13 A prophet then arrived, looking for Ahab king of Israel. 'Yahweh says this,' he said. ' "You have seenthis huge army? This very day I shal deliver it into your hands, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '	13 Neste momento, apresentando-se um profeta a Acab, rei de Israel, disse: Eis o que diz o Senhor: Viste toda esta inumerável multidão? Pois eu te declaro que hoje ta entregarei nas tuas mãos, para que tu saibas que eu sou o Senhor.
14 'By whose means?' Ahab asked. The prophet replied, 'Yahweh says this, "By means of the guards ofthe district governors." ' 'Who wil co-ordinate the attack?' Ahab asked. 'You will,' the prophet replied.	14 Acab disse: Por meio de quem? Ele respondeu-lhe: Eis o que diz o Senhor: Por meio dos servidores dos chefes das províncias. Acab disse: Quem começará a pelejar? O profeta disse-lhe: Tu.
15 So Ahab inspected the guards of the district governors: there were two hundred and thirty-two. Afterthese he reviewed the army, all the Israelites: there were seven thousand.	15 Acab contou os servidores dos chefes das províncias, e achou que eram duzentos e trinta e dois; depois contou o povo de todos os filhos de Israel, e achou que (os aptos para combater) eram sete mil.
16 They made a sortie at midday, when Ben-Hadad was drinking himself senseless under the awnings,he and the thirty-two kings who were al ies.	16 Saíram ao meio dia, quando Benadad bebia e se embriagava na sua tenda, com os trinta e dois reis, que tinham ido em seu socorro.
17 The guards of the district governors led the sortie. A report was made to Ben-Hadad: 'Some menhave come out of Samaria.'	17 Os servidores dos chefes das províncias marchavam na primeira linha. Benadad mandou espiões, que lhe disseram: São homens que sairam de Samaria.
18 He said, 'If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take themalive too.'	18 Ele disse: Ou eles venham tratar de paz, ou venham para pelejar, prendei-os vivos.
19 So they made a sortie from the city, the district governors' guards and behind them the army,	19 Avançaram, pois, os servidores dos chefes das províncias, e o resto do exército os seguia.
20 and each struck down his man. Aram took to flight and Israel pursued; Ben-Hadad king of Aramescaped on horseback.	20 Cada um deles matou seu homem, e logo os Sírios fugiram, e Israel perseguiu-os. Benadad, rei da Síria, também fugiu a cavalo com alguns cavaleiros.
21 The king of Israel then advanced, capturing horses and chariots and inflicting a great defeat on Aram.	21 O rei de Israel, tendo também saído, matou cavalos e destruiu carros, fazendo um grande estrago nos Sírios.
22 The prophet then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Now is the time to be resolute and think careful yabout what you should do, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram wil march against you.'	22 Indo um profeta ter com o rei de Israel, disse lhe: Vai, cobra ânimo e considera o que tens para fazer, porque no ano próximo o rei da Síria voltará contra ele.
23 The servants of the king of Aram said to him, 'Their gods are gods of the mountains; that is why theyhave proved stronger than we are. But if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.	23 Os servos, porém, do rei da Síria disseram-lhe: Os deuses dos montes são seus deuses, e por isso eles nos venceram; é melhor que pelejemos com eles em campo raso, e vencê-los-emos.
24 This is what you must do: remove all these kings from their commands and appoint professionalsoldiers in their place.	24 Tu, pois, faze isto: Aparta do exército do os reis, e põe em seu lugar os primeiros oficiais;
25 You, for your part, must recruit an army as large as the one which deserted you, with as many horsesand as many chariots; then if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.' He listened to theiradvice and acted accordingly.	25 levanta um exército semelhante ao que perdeste, com equivalente número de cavalos e carros. Nós pelejaremos contra eles em campo raso, e tu verás que os desbarataremos. Ele ouviu e seguiu o seu conselho.
26 At the turn of the year, Ben-Hadad mustered the Aramaeans and marched on Aphek to fight Israel.	26 Portanto, tendo passado um ano, fez Benadad o recenseamento dos Sírios e foi a Afec, para combater contra Israel.
27 The Israelites were already mobilised and provisioned, and marched out to meet them. Encampedopposite them, the Israelites looked like two herds of goats, whereas the Aramaeans fil ed the countryside.	27 Foi feito também o recenseamento dos filhos de Israel, que, providos de víveres, marcharam contra os Sírios. Acamparam em frente deles, com o dois pequenos rebanhos de cabras, ao passo que os Sírios cobriam o país.
28 The man of God then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Yahweh says this, "Since Aram has saidthat Yahweh is a god of the mountains and not a god of the plains, I shall put the whole of this huge army intoyour power, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '	28 Vindo um homem de Deus, disse ao rei de Israel: Eis o que diz o Senhor: Porque os Sírios disseram: O Senhor é Deus dos montes e não Deus dos vales eu te entregarei nas mãos toda esta grande multidão para que saibais que eu sou o Senhor.
29 For seven days they were encamped opposite each other. On the seventh day battle was joined andthe Israelites slaughtered the Aramaeans, a hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.	29 Estiveram os exércitos ordenados em batalha sete dias, um em frente do outro, e ao sétimo dia deu-se a batalha: os filhos de Israel mataram num dia cem mil homens de pé, dos Sírios.
30 The rest fled to Aphek, into the citadel, but the city walls collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of thesurvivors. Now Ben-Hadad had fled and taken refuge in an inner room inside the citadel.	30 Os que escaparam, fugiram para a cidade de Afec, mas as muralhas cairam sobre os vinte e sete mil homens, que tinham restado. Benadad, fugindo, entrou na cidade e retirou-se ao lugar mais secreto duma câmara.
31 'Look,' his servants said to him, 'we have heard that the kings of Israel are faithful and kind kings. Letus put sackcloth round our waists and cords round our heads and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he wilspare your life.'	31 Os seus servos disseram-lhe: Nós tem os ouvido dizer que os reis da casa de Israel são clementes; ponhamos, pois, sacos sobre os nossos rins e cordas ao nosso pescoço, e vamos ter com o rei de Israel; talvez ele nos poupe a vida.
32 So they wrapped sackcloth round their waists and put cords round their heads and went to the king ofIsrael, and said, 'Your servant Ben-Hadad says, "Spare my life." '	32 Cingiram-se com sacos pelos rins, puseram cordas ao pescoço e foram ter com o rei de Israel, dizendo-lhe: O teu servo Benadad diz: Concede-me, eu te peço, a vida. Ele responde: Se ainda vive, ele é meu irmão.
33 'So he is stil alive?' he replied. 'He is my brother.' The men took this for a good omen and quicklyseized on his words. 'Yes,' they said, 'Ben-Hadad is your brother.' Ahab said, 'Go and fetch him.' Then Ben-Hadad came out to him and Ahab made him get up into his chariot.	33 Os Sírios tom aram isto por bom preságio e, tomando logo a palavra da sua boca, disseram: Benadad é teu irmão. Ele disse-lhes: Ide e trazei-mo. Veio, pois, Benadad à presença de Acab, e este mandou-o subir para o seu carro.
34 Ben-Hadad said, 'I shall restore the towns which my father took from your father and you may set upa trading quarter for yourself in Damascus as my father did in Samaria.' 'With a treaty,' Ahab said, 'I shall set youfree.' Granting him a treaty, Ahab let him go.	34 Benadad disse-lhe: Eu te restituirei as cidades que meu pai tomou a teu pai; faze para ti praças em Damasco, como meu pai as fez em Samaria, e eu me retirarei de ti, depois de feita a aliança. Acab fez, pois, aliança com ele deixou-o ir livre,
35 At Yahweh's command a member of the brotherhood of prophets said to a companion of his, 'Strikeme,' but the man refused to strike him.	35 Então um dos filhos dos profetas disse da parte do Senhor a um seu companheiro: Fere-me. Porém ele não o quis ferir.
36 So he said to him, 'Since you have disobeyed Yahweh's order, the very moment you leave me a lionwil kill you.' And no sooner had he left him than he met a lion, which killed him.	36 Ele disse-lhe: Porque não quiseste ouvir a voz do Senhor, logo que te afastares de mim, um leão te matará. Mal se havia afastado um pouco dele, um leão o feriu e matou.
37 The prophet then went to find another man and said, 'Strike me,' and the man struck him andwounded him.	37 Encontrando depois outro homem, disse-lhe: Fere-me. Este homem acometeu-o e feriu-o.
38 The prophet then went and stood waiting for the king on the road, disguising himself with a bandageover his eyes.	38 Partiu, então o profeta, para encontrar o rei no caminho, e disfarçou-se, cobrindo o seu rosto com um véu.
39 As the king passed, he cal ed out to him, 'Your servant was making his way to where the fight wasthickest when someone left the fighting to bring a man to me, and said, "Guard this man; if he is found missing,your life wil pay for his, or else you wil have to pay one talent of silver."	39 Tendo passado o rei, gritou atrás dele e disse-lhe: O teu servo saiu a pelejar de perto, e, tendo fugido um homem, um outro mo trouxe e disse-me: Guarda-me este homem: se ele fugir, a tua vida responderá pela vida dele, ou pagarás um talento de prata.
40 But your servant was busy with one thing and another, the man disappeared.' The king of Israel said,'That is your sentence then. You have pronounced it yourself.'	40 Quando eu todo perturbado andava às voltas de uma parte para a outra, de repente desapareceu. O rei de Israel disse-lhe: Tal é a tua sentença, que tu mesmo pronunciaste.
41 At this the man quickly pul ed off the bandage over his eyes, and the king of Israel recognised him asone of the prophets.	41 Então ele tirou sùbitamente o véu que o disfarçava e o rei de Israel conheceu que era um dos profetas.
42 He said to the king, 'Yahweh says this, "Since you have let the man escape who was under my curseof destruction, your life wil pay for his, your people for his people." '	42 Ele disse ao rei: Ela o que diz o Senhor: Porque deixaste escapar das tuas mãos um homem digno de morte, a tua vida responderá pela sua vida, e o teu povo pelo seu povo.
43 And the king of Israel went home, gloomy and out of temper, back to Samaria.	43 O rei de Israel voltou para sua casa, sombrio e enfurecido, e chegou a Samaria.
