1 The LORD said to Moses,	1 Промовив Господь до Мойсея:
2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."	2 «Пошли людей та нехай розглянуть Ханаан-землю, що ось я хочу дати її синам Ізраїля; пошлете їх по одному з батьківського коліна та щоб усі з них були князями.»
3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;	3 І послав Мойсей їх із Паран-пустині за Господнім наказом; самих таких чоловіків послав, що були головами в синів Ізраїля.
4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;	4 Ось їхні ймення: від коліна Рувима Шаммуа, син Заккура.
5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;	5 Від коліна Симеона Шафат, син Хорі.
6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;	6 Від коліна Юди Калев, син Єфунне.
7 Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;	7 Від коліна Іссахара Їгал, син Йосифа.
8 Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;	8 Від коліна Ефраїма Ошеа, син Нуна.
9 Palti, son of Raphu, of the tribe of Benjamin;	9 Від коліна Веніямина Палті, син Рафу.
10 Gaddiel, son of Sodi, of the tribe of Zebulun;	10 Від коліна Завулона Гаддієл, син Соді.
11 Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with	11 Від коліна Йосифа, коліна Манассії, Гадді, син Сусі.
12 Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;	12 Від коліна Дана Аммієл, син Гемаллі.
13 Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;	13 Від коліна Ашера Сетур, син Міхаела.
14 Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;	14 Від коліна Нафталі Нахбі, син Вофсі.
15 Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.	15 Від коліна Гада Реуел, син Махі.
16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.	16 Це ймення мужів, яких послав Мойсей, щоб розглянули землю. Ошеу ж, сина Нуна, назвав Мойсей — Єгошуа (Ісус).
17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,	17 Послав їх Мойсей, щоб розглянули Ханаан-землю і мовив: «Здійміться звідсіль у Негев та й зійдіть на гору,
18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?	18 та огляньте землю, яка вона, і люд, що в ній живе, сильний він чи слабий, мало його чи багато,
19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?	19 і який той край, де він живе, чи добрий чи поганий, і які міста, що в них живе він, чи відкриті чи укріплені,
20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.	20 і яка земля, родюча вона чи ялова, чи е на ній дерево а чи ні. Та будьте сміливі й принесіть плоди землі.» А була саме пора дозрівання винограду.
21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.	21 То й пішли вони й розглянули землю від Сін-пустині до Рехову, що в напрямі Хамату.
22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)	22 Зійшли вони у Негев і дійшли до Хеврону, а там же були Ахіман, Шешай і Талмай, діти Анакові. Хеврон же збудовано сім років перед Цоаном в Єгипті.
23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.	23 І дійшовши до Ешкол-долини, зрізали вони там вітку з однією виноградною китицею та й несли її удвох на жердині, опріч ґранат і смоков.
24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.	24 Місце ж те названо Ешкол-долиною з-за грон, що зрізали там сини Ізраїля.
25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,	25 Повернулися вони з розглядин краю під кінець сорока днів.
26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.	26 І, прибувши, прийшли вони до Мойсея та Арона й усієї громади синів Ізраїля в Паран-пустині, у Кадеші, і принесли вістку їм та всій громаді й показали їм плоди землі.
27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.	27 Тож оповіли йому, кажучи: «Прийшли ми в землю, куди ти посилав нас; вона таки й справді молоком та медом тече, ось і плоди її.
28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.	28 Тільки ж народ, що в ній живе, сильний та й міста укріплені, вельми великі; бачили ми там і потомків Анака.
29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."	29 Амалек живе в землі Негев; а Хеттит і Євусій та Аморій живуть у горах, Ханаан же живе при морі і здовж берегів Йордану.»
30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."	30 Тоді Калев заходився втихомирювати людей, що були проти Мойсея, і промовив: «Ми таки підемо й посядемо її, стане бо сили в нас її підбити.»
31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."	31 Чоловіки ж, які ходили з ним (на розглядини), твердили: «Ні, мовляв, не в силі ми напасти на той народ; він від нас сильніший.»
32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,	32 І рознесли вони між синами Ізраїля недобрі вістки про землю, яку розслідили, кажучи: «Земля, що нею ми пройшли, щоб розвідати її, то така земля, яка пожирає своїх мешканців, а всі люди, що їх ми бачили там, великі на зріст.
33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."	33 Бачили ми там і велетнів, синів Анака, з роду велетнів; і самим нам здавалось, наче ми та сарана, і такими, певно, й були ми в їхніх очах.
