| 1 Or egli avvenne, che mentre Apollo era in Corinto, Paolo, scorse le provincie superiori, giunse ad Efeso, e vi trovò alcuni discepoli: | 1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. |
| 2 E disse loro: Avete voi ricevuto lo Spirito santo dopo, che avete creduto? Ma quelli gli dissero: Non abbiamo nemmeno sentito a dire, se siavi lo Spirito santo. | 2 And he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said, "No, we have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." |
| 3 Ed egli gli disse: in (nome di) chi adunque siete stati battezzati? E quelli dissero: Col battesimo di Giovanni. | 3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism." |
| 4 Ma disse Paolo: Giovanni battezzò con battesimo di penitenza il popolo dicendo, che credessero in quello, il quale dovea venir dopo di lui, cioè in Gesù. | 4 And Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus." |
| 5 Udite tali cose furono battezzati nel nome del Signore Gesù. | 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. |
| 6 E avendo Paolo imposte loro le mani, venne sopra di essi lo Spirito santo, e parlavan le lingue, e profetavano. | 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. |
| 7 Questi erano in tutto circa dodici uomini. | 7 There were about twelve of them in all. |
| 8 Ed entrato nella Sinagoga parlava liberamente, disputando per tre mesi, e rendendo ragione delle cose del regno di Dio. | 8 And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, arguing and pleading about the kingdom of God; |
| 9 Ma indurandosi alcuni, e non credendo, e dicendo male della via del Signore dinanzi alla moltitudine, ritiratosi da coloro, segregò i discepoli, e disputava ogni di nella scuola di un certo Tiranno. | 9 but when some were stubborn and disbelieved, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them, taking the disciples with him, and argued daily in the hall of Tyrannus. |
| 10 E ciò fu per due anni, talmente che tutti quelli, che abitavan nell'Asia, udirono la parola del Signore e Giudei, e Greci. | 10 This continued for two years, so that all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. |
| 11 E miracoli non ordinari faceva Dio per mano di Paolo: | 11 And God did extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, |
| 12 Di modo che persino portavansi ai malati i fazzoletti, e le fasce state sul corpo di lui, e partivansi da essi le malattie, e gli spiriti cattivi ne uscivano. | 12 so that handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them. |
| 13 E si provarono anche alcuni di que', che andavano attorno esorcisti Giudei, ad invocare il nome del Signore Gesù sopra coloro, che avevano degli spiriti cattivi, dicendo: Vi scongiuro per quel Gesù predicato da Paolo. | 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to pronounce the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches." |
| 14 Que', che facevan questo, erano sette figli di Sceva Giudeo principe de' sacerdoti. | 14 Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. |
| 15 Ma il malo spirito rispose, e disse loro: Conosco Gesù, e so chi è Paolo: ma voi chi siete? | 15 But the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?" |
| 16 E saltato loro adosso quell'uomo, in cui era lo spirito pessimo, e potendone più di loro due, gli strapazzò in guisa, che ignudi, e feriti si partirono da quella casa. | 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, mastered all of them, and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. |
| 17 E questa cosa la riseppero e i Giudei tutti, e i Gentili, che abitavano in Efeso: ed entrò in tutti loro timore, e magnificavasi il nome del Signore Gesù. | 17 And this became known to all residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks; and fear fell upon them all; and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. |
| 18 E molti di quelli, che aveano creduto, venivano a confessare, e manifestare le opere loro. | 18 Many also of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. |
| 19 E molti di quelli, che erano andati dietro a cose vane, portarono a furia i libri, e li bruciarono in presenza di tutti: e calcolato il valore di essi, trovaron la somma di cinquantamila denari. | 19 And a number of those who practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. |
| 20 Cosi cresceva forte, e si stabiliva la parola di Dio. | 20 So the word of the Lord grew and prevailed mightily. |
| 21 Terminate queste cose, propose Paolo in ispirito, girata la Macedonia, e l'Alcaja, di andare a Gerusalemme, dicendo: Dopo che io sarò stato là, bisogna, ch'io vegga anche Roma. | 21 Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome." |
| 22 E mandati nella Macedonia due di quelli, che lo assistevano, Timoteo, ed Erasto, si rimase egli per un tempo nell'Asia. | 22 And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. |
| 23 E allora nacque non piccol tumulto per cagione della via del Signore. | 23 About that time there arose no little stir concerning the Way. |
| 24 Imperocché un certo orefice, per nome Demetrio, il quale faceva in argento dei templi di Diana, dava non poco guadagno agli artigiani. | 24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen. |
| 25 Convocati i quali, e quelli, che di cose simili lavoravano, disse: O uomini, voi sapete, che da questo lavorio vien la nostra ricchezza; | 25 These he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, "Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth. |
| 26 E vedete, e sentite, che non solo in Efeso, ma in quasi tutta l'Asia, questo Paolo con sue persuasioni ha fatto cambiare di sentimento a molta gente, affermando, che non son dei que', che si fan con le mani. | 26 And you see and hear that not only at Ephesus but almost throughout all Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable company of people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods. |
| 27 E non solo è pericolo, che questa nostra professione vituperevole divenga, ma di più, il tempio della grande Diana sarà contato per niente, e comincerà a distruggersi la maestà di lei, cui l'Asia tutta, e il mondo adora. | 27 And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may count for nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship." |
| 28 Udito questo, coloro si riempirono di sdegno, e sclamaron, dicendo: Gran Diana degli Efesini. | 28 When they heard this they were enraged, and cried out, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" |
| 29 E si riempiè la città di confusione, e corser tutti daccordo al teatro, strascinando Gaio, e Aristarco Macedoni, compagni di Paolo. | 29 So the city was filled with the confusion; and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul's companions in travel. |
| 30 E volendo Paolo affacciarsi al popolo, nol permisero i discepoli. | 30 Paul wished to go in among the crowd, but the disciples would not let him; |
| 31 Alcuni eziandio degli Asiarchi, che erangli amici, mandarono a pregarlo, che non si esponesse al teatro: | 31 some of the Asi-archs also, who were friends of his, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater. |
| 32 E quelli gridavano chi in un modo, e chi in un altro: essendo la adunanza in confusione, e i più non sapevano il perché si fossero adunati. | 32 Now some cried one thing, some another; for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. |
| 33 Fu poi tratto fuor della turba Alessandro, spingendolo avanti i Giudei. E Alessandro fatto segno con mano, che si tacessero, voleva dir sua ragione al popolo. | 33 Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander motioned with his hand, wishing to make a defense to the people. |
| 34 Ma subito che l'ebber conosciuto per Giudeo, si fecer di tutti una sola voce, che per quasi due ore gridavano: Gran Diana degli Efesini. | 34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all with one voice cried out, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" |
| 35 E avendo il segretario calmata la turba, disse: Uomini Efesini, e qual è uomo, che non sappia, che la città di Efeso è adoratrice della grande Diana, prole di Giove? | 35 And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, "Men of Ephesus, what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky? |
| 36 Non potendo adunque contraddirsi a questo, convenevol cosa si o, che voi vi acquietiate, e nulla facciate temerariamente. | 36 Seeing then that these things cannot be contradicted, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash. |
| 37 Imperocché avete condotti questi uomini né sacrileghi, né bestemmiatori della vostra dea. | 37 For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess. |
| 38 Che se Demetrio, e gli artefici, che sono con lui, hanno da dire contro qualcheduno, vi sono i giorni, ne' quali si tien ragione, e vi sono i proconsoli, se la disputino tra di loro. | 38 If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against any one, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls; let them bring charges against one another. |
| 39 Che se alcun' altra cosa voi bramate, in una legittima adunanza potrà decidersi. | 39 But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly. |
| 40 Imperocché siamo in pericolo di essere accusati di sedizione perle cose di questo giorno: non essendovi chi abbia dato causa (di cui possiam render ragione) a questo sollevamento. E detto questo licenziò l'adunanza. | 40 For we are in danger of being charged with rioting today, there being no cause that we can give to justify this commotion." |
| 41 And when he had said this, he dismissed the assembly. |
