Atti degli Apostoli 22

BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Fratelli e signori miei, udite la ragione che io voglio rendere del fatto mio.	1 'My brothers, my fathers, listen to what I have to say to you in my defence.'
2 E udendolo quelli parlare in lingua ebrea, diederli audienza.	2 When they realised he was speaking in Hebrew, the silence was even greater than before.
3 E (allora Paulo incominciò a parlare, e) disse: io sono uomo giudeo, nato di Tarso di Cilicia, ma nutricato in questa città, e ammaestrato della legge a' piedi di Gamaliello, secondo [che] voi.	3 'I am a Jew', Paul said, 'and was born at Tarsus in Cilicia. I was brought up here in this city. It wasunder Gamaliel that I studied and was taught the exact observance of the Law of our ancestors. In fact, I was asful of duty towards God as you al are today.
4 E questa via (e vita) che ora tengo io (per zelo della nostra legge) incominciai a perseguitare insino alla morte, legando e imprigionando (quanti cristiani trovava) maschi e femine,	4 I even persecuted this Way to the death and sent women as wel as men to prison in chains
5 come il principe de' sacerdoti mi può rendere testimonianza, e gli altri seniori, dalli quali io ebbi lettere (e autorità) d' andare in Damasco (e avere aiuto e favore da giudei che v'erano) a perseguitare e prendere li cristiani, e menarli presi in Ierusalem per che fossero puniti (e morti).	5 as the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify. I even received letters from them to thebrothers in Damascus, which I took with me when I set off to bring prisoners back from there to Jerusalem forpunishment.
6 Or avvenne che approssimandomi a Damasco, subitamente (uno giorno) in sul mezzo dì mi sopravenne una copiosa luce dal cielo.	6 'It happened that I was on that journey and nearly at Damascus when in the middle of the day a brightlight from heaven suddenly shone round me.
7 Per la quale abbagliato caddi in terra, e udi' una voce che (gridò e) disse: Saulo, Saulo, perchè mi persèguiti?	7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"
8 E rispondetti io (dicendo): Signore, chi se' tu? Egli rispose: io sone Iesù Nazareno, il quale tu perseguiti; (ma sappi che dura cosa è a te a ricalcitrare contra il stimolo).	8 I answered, "Who are you, Lord?" and he said to me, "I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you arepersecuting."
9 E li compagni (e berrovieri) ch' erano meco ben videro il lume, e udirono la voce, ma non intendevano le parole.	9 The people with me saw the light but did not hear the voice which spoke to me.
10 E dicendo io: Signore, che debbo fare? ed elli mi disse: sta su, ed entra in Damasco, e ivi ti sarà detto che debbi fare.	10 I said, "What am I to do, Lord?" The Lord answered, "Get up and go into Damascus, and there youwil be told what you have been appointed to do."
11 E (rizzandomi, e) non vedendo lume per la grande chiarità della predetta luce, li compagni mi presero a mano, e misermi in Damasco.	11 Since the light had been so dazzling that I was blind, I got to Damascus only because my companionsled me by the hand.
12 E (quivi stando) venne a me uno discepolo cristiano (mandato da Cristo), uomo di buona testimonianza, che aveva nome Anania.	12 'Someone called Ananias, a devout fol ower of the Law and highly thought of by al the Jews livingthere,
13 E dissemi: fratello mio Saulo, risguarda in me. Ed io incontanente apersi gli occhi, e mira'lo.	13 came to see me; he stood beside me and said, "Brother Saul, receive your sight." Instantly my sightcame back and I was able to see him.
14 Ed egli allora mi disse: Dio de' nostri padri ha preordinato di farti vedere la volontà sua, e che vedessi il giusto (suo, cioè Cristo) e che udissi la voce sua.	14 Then he said, "The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will, to see the Upright One andhear his own voice speaking,
15 E sara'li testimonio a tutte le genti di quello che hai udito e veduto.	15 because you are to be his witness before all humanity, testifying to what you have seen and heard.
16 Sta su adunque, e non t' indugiare, e ricevi il battesimo, e lava li peccati tuoi, e invoca il nome suo, (e io così feci).	16 And now why delay? Hurry and be baptised and wash away your sins, cal ing on his name."
17 E (ricevuto ch' io ebbi il battesimo) tornai in Ierusalem; ed entrando io nel tempio fui rapito in eccesso di mente.	17 'It happened that, when I got back to Jerusalem, and was praying in the Temple, I fell into a trance
18 E vidi Cristo, e udi' la voce sua, e disse: affrettati tosto, ed esci e fuggi da Ierusalem, perchè (li giudei) non riceverebbero tua testimonianza di me.	18 and then I saw him. "Hurry," he said, "leave Jerusalem at once; they wil not accept the testimony you are giving about me."
19 E io (risposi e) dissi: Signore, elli sanno che io era persecutore de' cristiani, e prendevali e incarceravali, e affiigevali per ogni modo che io poteva.	19 "Lord," I answered, "they know that I used to go from synagogue to synagogue, imprisoning andflogging those who believed in you;
20 E quando fu lapidato il tuo servo Stefano, io presente e consenziente guardava le vestimenta di quelli che il lapidavano.	20 and that when the blood of your witness Stephen was being shed, I, too, was standing by, in fullagreement with his murderers, and in charge of their clothes."
21 E allora il Signore mi disse: va (e sia certo) ch' io ti mandarò alle nazioni (cioè alle genti pagane) da lunga.	21 Then he said to me, "Go! I am sending you out to the gentiles far away." '
22 E poi che li giudei l' ebbero udito insino a quella parola, (recandosi a dispetto quello ch' elli diceva, cioè d' andare alla gente pagana a predicare), incominciorono a gridare, e dire (al tribuno): togli, di terra questo rio uomo, perciò che non è degno più di vivere.	22 So far they had listened to him, but at these words they began to shout, 'Rid the earth of the man! Heis not fit to live!'
23 E così gridando, e spogliandosi, e gittando (e spargendo) la polvere per l'aere (in segno di dolore),	23 They were yel ing, waving their cloaks and throwing dust into the air,
24 comandò il tribuno, ch' elli fusse preso e flagellato, sì che per tormento confessasse per che cagione (e colpa) i giudei così gridavano contra a lui.	24 and so the tribune had him brought into the fortress and ordered him to be examined under the lash,to find out the reason for the outcry against him.
25 Ed essendo già legato Paulo (per mettere al tormento) sì disse a quello Centurione ( ch' era officiale a farlo tormentare): or come? v'è lecito di flagellare uomo romano, convinto di niuno peccato?	25 But when they had strapped him down Paul said to the centurion on duty, 'Is it legal for you to flog aman who is a Roman citizen and has not been brought to trial?'
26 La quale parola udendo Centurione, andò incontanente al tribuno, e disse: or che farai? sappi che questo uomo è romano.	26 When he heard this the centurion went and told the tribune; 'Do you realise what you are doing?' hesaid. 'This man is a Roman citizen.'
27 Onde il tribuno (temendo, incontanente) venne a Paulo, e disseli: dimmi la verità; se' tu romano? E rispondendo Paulo, che sì,	27 So the tribune came and asked him, 'Tel me, are you a Roman citizen?' Paul answered 'Yes'.
28 il tribuno (di ciò meravigliandosi) disse: a me costò molta pecunia a potere diventare cittadino di Roma. E Paulo rispose: ed io sono nato in questa civilità, (cioè vuole dire ch' era nato, non in Roma, ma di padre che aveva privilegio cittadinesco di Roma).	28 To this the tribune replied, 'It cost me a large sum to acquire this citizenship.' 'But I was born to it,'said Paul.
29 Onde incontanente, udendo questo, il tribuno temette; (però che era grande pericolo a toccare uomo romano); e fece cessare e partire quelli masnadieri li quali il dovevano tormentare.	29 Then those who were about to examine him hurriedly withdrew, and the tribune himself was alarmedwhen he realised that he had put a Roman citizen in chains.
30 E il seguente dì, volendo pure sapere per che cagione elli era accusato, sì il fece sciogliere d'ogni legame; e comandò che li giudei venissero (a dire ed esponere contra a lui quello che volevano); e ordinollo in mezzo di loro.	30 The next day, since he wanted to know for sure what charge the Jews were bringing, he freed Pauland gave orders for a meeting of the chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin; then he brought Paul down and sethim in front of them.
