| 1 Vana speranza e bugia è nel disensato; e li sogni ingrassano li matti. | 1 The hopes of a man that is void of understanding are vain and deceitful: and dreams lift up fools. |
| 2 Così come è colui che piglia l'ombra e va di dietro al vento, così è colui che si accosta alli bugiardi sogni. | 2 The man that giveth heed to lying visions, is like to him that catcheth at a shadow, and followeth after the wind. |
| 3 Secondo questo è la visione de' sogni; dinanzi alla faccia dell' uomo è una somiglianza d'un altro uomo. | 3 The vision of dreams is the resemblance of one thing to another: as when a man's likeness is before the face of a man. |
| 4 E da colui ch' è sozzo qual cosa fia più netta? e dal bugiardo qual, vero si dirae? | 4 What can be made clean by the unclean? and what truth can come from that which is false? |
| 5 Indovinamento di errore, e li bugiardi augurii, e li sogni di coloro che male fanno, è vanitade. | 5 Deceitful divinations and lying omens and the dreams of evildoers, are vanity: |
| 6 E sì come il cuore di quella femina che partorisce, così è il cuore tuo con sogno fantastico; se la visione non ti sia mandata dallo Altissimo, non vi apporrai il cuore tuo. | 6 And the heart fancieth as that of a woman in travail: except it be a vision sent forth from the most High, set no thy heart upon them. |
| 7 Li sogni feciono molti errare, e caddono coloro che sperarono in quelli. | 7 For dreams have deceived many, and they have failed that put their trust in them. |
| 8 Sanza la bugia si compierae la parola della legge; e la sapienza nella bocca del fedele si spianerae. | 8 The word of the law shall be fulfilled without a lie, and wisdom shall be made plain in the mouth of the faithful. |
| 9 Chi non è tentato, che sa colui? L'uomo (in molte tribulazioni) esperto penserae molte cose; e chi molte cose imparoe, spianerà lo intendimento delle cose. | 9 What doth he know, that hath not been tried? A man that hath much experience, shall think of many things: and he that hath learned many things, shall shew forth understanding. |
| 10 Colui che non è esperto, poche cose intende e conosce; colui che tra molti è pazzo, multiplicherà la malizia. | 10 He that hath no experience, knoweth little: and he that hath been experienced in many things, multiplieth prudence. |
| 11 Chi non è tentato, quali cose egli sae? Chi non è costante, abbondarae in malizia. | 11 He that hath not been tried, what manner of things doth he know? he that hath been surprised, shall abound with subtlety. |
| 12 Molte cose imparando vidi, sì come molte usanze di parole. | 12 I have seen many things by travelling, and many customs of things. |
| 13 Alcuna volta fui in pericolo perfino alla morte per cagione di queste (costituzioni), e fui liberato per la grazia di Dio. | 13 Sometimes I have been in danger of death for these things, and I have been delivered by the grace of God. |
| 14 Lo spirito di quelli che temono Iddio è cercato, e per rispetto di quello saranno benedetti (li uomini). | 14 The spirit of those that fear God; is sought after, and by his regard shall be blessed. |
| 15 La speranza di coloro è in colui che li salva; e li occhi di Dio verso coloro ch' ello ama. | 15 For their hope is on him that saveth them, and the eyes of God are upon them that love him. |
| 16 Colui che teme Iddio, di nulla averà paura, e non temerà; però ch' egli è la sua speranza. | 16 He that feareth the Lord shall tremble at nothing, and shall not be afraid for he is his hope. |
| 17 Beata è l'anima di colui che teme Iddio. | 17 The soul of him that feareth the Lord is blessed. |
| 18 E a quale guarda, e chi è la fortezza sua? | 18 To whom doth he look, and who in his strength? |
| 19 Li occhi di Dio sopra coloro che il temono; Iddio sì è difenditore potente, fermamento di virtute, coprimento di ardore e ombracolo del meridiano (caldo). | 19 The eyes of the Lord are upon them that fear him, he is their powerful protector, and strong stay, a defence from the heat, and a cover from the sun at noon, |
| 20 Purgamento contro all' offensione, adiutorio contro alle fortune, egli esalta l'anima, e illumina gli occhi, dà sanitade e vita e benedizione. | 20 A preservation from stumbling, and a help from falling; he raiseth up the soul, and enlighteneth the eyes, and giveth health, and life, and blessing. |
| 21 Colui che sacrifica di iniqua sostanza, l' offerta sua è corrotta; e li schernimenti de' rei (nelli sacrificii) non piacciono a Dio. | 21 The offering of him that sacrificeth of a thing wrongfully gotten, is stained, and the mockeries of the unjust are not acceptable. |
| 22 Iddio solamente è proprio di coloro che mantengono sè nella via della veritade e della giustizia. | 22 The Lord is only for them that wait upon him in the way of truth and justice. |
| 23 L' Altissimo non approva li doni delli malvagi, e non guarda nelle offerte delli rei; nè nella moltitudine de' sacrificii sarà loro misericordioso delli peccati. | 23 The most High approveth not the gifts of the wicked: neither hath he respect to the oblations of the unjust, nor will he be pacified for sine by the multitude of their sacrifices. |
| 24 Colui che offera il sacrificio della sostanza de' poveri, quasi come colui che uccide il figliuolo nel cospetto del padre suo. | 24 He that offereth sacrifice of the goods of the poor, is as one that sacrificeth the son in the presence of his father. |
| 25 Il pane de' bisognosi sì è la vita del povero; colui che il frauda, è omicidiale. | 25 The bread of the needy, is the life of the poor: he that defraudeth them thereof, is a man of blood. |
| 26 Colui che toglie il pane nel sudore al povero, sì è come colui che uccide il prossimo suo. | 26 He that taketh away the bread gotten by sweat, is like him that killeth his neighbour. |
| 27 Colui che spande il sangue, e colui che frauda il mercenario, sono fratelli. | 27 He that sheddeth blood, and he that defraudeth the labourer of his hire, are brothers. |
| 28 Uno è colui che edifica, e uno è colui che disfa; che altro hanno elli di questo, se non fatica? | 28 When one buildeth up, and another pulleth down: what profit have they but the labour? |
| 29 Uno adora, e uno maledice; la cui voce esaudirà Iddio? | 29 When one prayeth, and another curseth: whose voice will God hear? |
| 30 Colui che si lava dal morto, e da capo tocca il morto, che gli giova il suo lavare? | 30 He that washeth himself after touching the dead, if he toucheth him again, what doth his washing avail? |
| 31 E così l'uomo che digiuna nelli peccati suoi, e ancora fa quello medesimo peccato, or che gli giova umiliandosi? or chi esaudirà la orazione sua? | 31 So a man that fasteth for his sins, and doth the same again, what doth his humbling himself profit him? who will hear his prayer? |
