1 La sapienza dello umiliato esalterà il capo suo, e farallo sedere nel mezzo de' grandi.	1 The wisdom of one who is humble will exalt his head, and will cause him to sit down in the midst of great men.
2 Non lodare l' uomo secondo la forma sua, e non dispregiar l' uomo secondo l'aspetto suo.	2 You should not praise a man for his beauty, and you should not despise a man for his appearances.
3 L'ape è picciola nelli volanti, e il frutto suo hae il principato delle dolcezze.	3 The bee is small among flying things, but its fruit holds the summit of sweetness.
4 Mai non ti gloriare nelle vestimenta, e non te ne esaltare nel dì dello onore tuo; però che maravigliose sono l'opere dello Altissimo, e gloriose e occulte sono tutte le sue opere.	4 You should not glory in clothing at any time, and you should not let yourself be extolled in the day of your honor. For the works of the Most High alone are wondrous; and glorious and hidden and unseen are his works.
5 Molti tiranni sederono in sedia regale, e tale di cui non si pensò portò corona.	5 Many tyrants have sat upon a throne, and one whom no one would admire has worn a diadem.
6 Molti potenti furono fortemente oppremuti; e li famosi furono dati in mano ad altrui.	6 Many powerful men have been powerfully cast down, and the illustrious have been handed over into the hands of others.
7 Prima che tu domandi, non vituperare alcuno; e quando averai addomandato, riprendi giustamente.	7 Before you inquire, you should not place blame on anyone; and when you have inquired, reprove justly.
8 Non rispondere parola, prima che tu oda; in mezzo delli antichi non parlare.	8 Before you listen, you should not respond a word; and you should not interrupt in the middle of a discourse.
9 Non contendere di quella cosa che non ti grava; e non istare nel piato delli peccanti.	9 You should not contend in a matter which does not concern you, and you should not sit in judgment together with sinners.
10 Figliuol mio, le opere [tue] non sieno in molti atti; per che tu sia ricco, non sarai sanza peccato. Se tu seguiterai molti, non piglierai; e se tu fuggirai, non scamperai.	10 Son, you should not be involved in many matters. And if you become rich, you will not be free from transgression. For if you pursue, you will not apprehend; and if you run ahead, you will not escape.
11 Egli è uomo che lavora e studiasi, ed è rammaricoso e crudele, e tanto maggiormente non abbonderae.	11 There is an impious man who labors and hurries and grieves, but all the more will he be without abundance.
12 E sì è un altro uomo languido, e che ha bisogno d' essere ricomperato, molto mancante in forza, e abbondante in povertade.	12 There is a debilitated man in need of recovery, who is lacking in strength and abundant in poverty.
13 E l'occhio di Dio guatoe colui in bene, e dirizzoe lui della umilitade sua, e levoe il capo suo (della tribulazione); in colui molti si sono maravigliati, e onorarono Iddio.	13 Yet the eye of God has looked with favor upon him for his benefit, and he has lifted him up from his humiliation, and he has exalted his head. And many have wondered at him, and they have honored God.
14 Li beni, li mali, la vita, la morte, la povertade la onestade sono da Dio.	14 Good things and misfortune, life and death, poverty and wealth, are from God.
15 Sapienza e disciplina e scienza della legge sono appo Iddio; la dilezione e le vie de' buoni sono appo lui.	15 Wisdom, and discipline, and knowledge of the law are with God. Love and the ways of good things are with him.
16 L'errore e le tenebre sono concreate a'peccatori; coloro che si esaltano nelli mali, invecchiano in quelli.	16 Error and darkness have been created by sinners. And those who exult in evil, grow old in evil.
17 Il dono di Dio sta fermo alli giusti, e le utilitadi di colui averanno prosperitade in eterno.	17 The gift of God remains with the just man, and his advancement will have success unto eternity.
18 Egli è chi arricchisce, temperatamente operando; e questa è la parte del merito suo,	18 There is one who is enriched by spending sparingly, and this is the extent of his reward.
19 ch' elli dice: apparecchia'mi, e io mangeroe ora de' beni miei solo.	19 About this, he says: “I have found rest for myself, and now I alone will eat from my goods.”
20 E non sa che il tempo passa, e la morte s' approssima, e ch' egli lascerae tutte le cose agli altri, e morrae.	20 But he does not know how much time will pass before death approaches, and then he must leave everything behind to others and die.
21 Sta nel testamento tuo, e in quello favella (con noi), e nell' opera de' tuoi comandamenti invecchia.	21 Stand fast in your covenant, and become familiar with it, and grow old in the work of your commandments.
22 Non dimorare nell' opera de' peccatori; ma confidati in Dio, e sta nel luogo tuo.	22 You should not spend time in the works of sinners. Instead, trust in God and remain in your own place.
23 Lieve è nel conspetto di Dio sùbito arricchire il povero.	23 For it is easy, in the eyes of God, to make a pauper suddenly rich.
24 La benedizione di Dio (sùbito) s' affretta a venire nel merito del giusto, e il provvedimento d'essa fruttifica in veloce onore.	24 The blessing of God hurries to reward the just man, and in a fleeting hour his advancement bears fruit.
25 Non dire: di che ho io bisogno? e che arò io dopo questa vita?	25 You should not say: “What do I need?” or, “What good will there be for me in this?”
26 Non dire: io son sufficiente a me stesso; e (avendo tanti beni) che mal mi puote avvenire?	26 You should not say: “I have enough for myself,” or, “What could be worse than this?”
27 Nel dì de' beni non ti dimenticare de' mali, e nel dì de' mali non ti dimenticar de' beni.	27 In a day of good things, you should not be forgetful of misfortunes. And in a day of misfortunes, you should not be forgetful of good things.
28 Però che lieve cosa è dinanzi da Dio, nel die della morte, meritare ciascuno secondo le sue vie.	28 For it is easy, in the sight of God, on the day of one’s passing, to repay each one according to his ways.
29 La afflizione sùbita fa dimenticare (l'onore e) li desideri carnali; e nella fine dell' uomo fia il palesamento delle sue opere.	29 The affliction of an hour causes one to forget great delights, and in the end of a man is the uncovering of his works.
30 Anzi la morte non lodare alcuno uomo; però che l'uomo si conosce ne' suoi figliuoli.	30 You should not praise any man before death. For a man is known by his children.
31 Non menare ogni uomo in casa tua; per che molte sono le insidie del fraudolente.	31 You should not bring every man into your house. For many are the snares of the deceitful.
32 Sì come li luoghi vicini del cuore delle pregne spirano e gettano fuori, e sì come la pernice s' induce nella gabbia, e sì come la cervia s' induce nel lacciuolo; così il cuore de' superbi, e così il ragguardatore vedendo il cadimento del prossimo suo.	32 For as a stomach with a bad smell vomits, and as a partridge is led into a cage, and like a deer led into a snare, so also is the heart of the arrogant. And it is like a bystander watching his neighbor fall.
33 Però che convertendo le cose buone in cattive, insidia e pone macula nelli eletti.	33 For it lies in ambush, and then turns good into evil, and it will place the blame on the elect.
34 Da una favilla s' accresce il fuoco, e da uno malizioso s'accresce il sangue; l'uomo peccatore agguata il sangue.	34 From one spark, a great fire grows; and from one deceitful man, much blood flows. But a very sinful man lies in ambush for blood.
35 Guàrdati dal pestilenzioso, però ch' elli fabbrica il male; guàrdati da lui, acciò ch' elli non induca sopra te ischernimento in perpetuo.	35 Pay close attention to yourself before a harmful man, for he fabricates evils. Otherwise, he may lead over you a whispered reproach unceasingly.
36 Caccia lo straniero; e se tu non lo cacci, elli ti sovvertirae nelli ravvolgimenti suoi, e faratti smarrire nelle proprie vie.	36 Receive a stranger to yourself, and he will overthrow you with a whirlwind, and he will alienate you from what is your very own.
