LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Un giorno Gesù andò in un luogo a pregare. Quando ebbe finito, uno dei discepoli gli disse: "Signore, insegnaci a pregare, come anche Giovanni ha insegnato ai suoi discepoli".	1 Now it happened that he was in a certain place praying, and when he had finished, one of his disciplessaid, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.'
2 Allora Gesù disse: "Quando pregate, dite così: Padre, sia santificato il tuo nome, venga il tuo regno.	2 He said to them, 'When you pray, this is what to say: Father, may your name be held holy, yourkingdom come;
3 Dacci ogni giorno il nostro pane quotidiano;	3 give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins,
4 perdona a noi i nostri peccati, perché anche noi perdoniamo ad ogni nostro debitore, e non farci entrare nella tentazione".	4 for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us. And do not put us to the test.'
5 Poi disse loro: "Chi di voi se ha un amico e va da lui a mezzanotte a dirgli: "Amico, prestami tre pani,	5 He also said to them, 'Suppose one of you has a friend and goes to him in the middle of the night tosay, "My friend, lend me three loaves,
6 perché è arrivato da me un amico di passaggio e non ho nulla in casa da dargli",	6 because a friend of mine on his travels has just arrived at my house and I have nothing to offer him;"
7 se quello dall'interno gli risponde: "Non mi dare noia, la porta è già chiusa e i miei bambini sono già a letto con me, non posso alzarmi per darti ciò che chiedi";	7 and the man answers from inside the house, "Do not bother me. The door is bolted now, and mychildren are with me in bed; I cannot get up to give it to you."
8 vi dico che se non si alzerà a darglieli perché gli è amico, si alzerà e gli darà quanto ha bisogno perché l'altro insiste.	8 I tel you, if the man does not get up and give it to him for friendship's sake, persistence wil make himget up and give his friend al he wants.
9 Perciò vi dico: chiedete e vi sarà dato; cercate e troverete; bussate e vi sarà aperto.	9 'So I say to you: Ask, and it wil be given to you; search, and you wil find; knock, and the door wil beopened to you.
10 Perché chiunque chiede ottiene, chi cerca trova, a chi bussa viene aperto.	10 For everyone who asks receives; everyone who searches finds; everyone who knocks wil have thedoor opened.
11 Tra di voi, quale padre darà, a suo figlio che lo richiede, un serpente invece che un pesce?	11 What father among you, if his son asked for a fish, would hand him a snake?
12 Oppure se gli chiede un uovo, gli darà uno scorpione?	12 Or if he asked for an egg, hand him a scorpion?
13 Dunque, se voi, cattivi come siete, sapete dare cose buone ai vostri figli, quanto più il Padre vostro celeste darà lo Spirito Santo a quelli che glielo chiedono".	13 If you then, evil as you are, know how to give your children what is good, how much more wil theheavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!'
14 Gesù stava scacciando un demonio che aveva reso muto un uomo. Questi, appena fu guarito, si mise a parlare e la folla rimase meravigliata.	14 He was driving out a devil and it was dumb; and it happened that when the devil had gone out thedumb man spoke, and the people were amazed.
15 Ma alcuni dissero: "E' per mezzo di Beelzebùl, il capo dei demòni, che egli scaccia gli spiriti maligni".	15 But some of them said, 'It is through Beelzebul, the prince of devils, that he drives devils out.'
16 Altri invece, per tendergli un tranello, gli domandavano un miracolo dal cielo.	16 Others asked him, as a test, for a sign from heaven;
17 Ma Gesù, conoscendo le loro intenzioni, disse loro: "Ogni regno diviso contro se stesso va in rovina e una casa crolla sull'altra.	17 but, knowing what they were thinking, he said to them, 'Any kingdom which is divided against itself isheading for ruin, and house col apses against house.
18 Se dunque Satana è in lotta contro se stesso, come potrà durare il suo regno? Voi dite che io scaccio i demòni con l'aiuto di Beelzebùl.	18 So, too, with Satan: if he is divided against himself, how can his kingdom last? - since you claim thatit is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out.
19 Ma se io scaccio gli spiriti maligni per mezzo di Beelzebùl, i vostri figli per mezzo di chi li scacciano? Perciò saranno proprio essi a giudicarvi.	19 Now if it is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out, through whom do your own sons drive them out?They shall be your judges, then.
20 Se, al contrario, io scaccio i demòni con il dito di Dio, è dunque arrivato per voi il regno di Dio.	20 But if it is through the finger of God that I drive devils out, then the kingdom of God has indeed caughtyou unawares.
21 Quando un uomo forte e ben armato fa la guardia alla sua casa, tutti i suoi beni stanno al sicuro.	21 So long as a strong man fully armed guards his own home, his goods are undisturbed;
22 Ma se arriva uno più forte di lui e lo vince, gli strappa via le armi nelle quali confidava e ne distribuisce il bottino.	22 but when someone stronger than himself attacks and defeats him, the stronger man takes away allthe weapons he relied on and shares out his spoil.
23 Chi non è con me è contro di me, e chi non raccoglie con me disperde".	23 'Anyone who is not with me is against me; and anyone who does not gather in with me throws away.
24 "Quando uno spirito maligno è uscito da un uomo, si aggira per luoghi deserti in cerca di riposo. Se però non ne trova, allora dice: "Ritornerò nella mia casa, donde sono uscito".	24 'When an unclean spirit goes out of someone it wanders through waterless country looking for aplace to rest, and not finding one it says, "I wil go back to the home I came from."
25 Arrivato, la trova pulita e ordinata.	25 But on arrival, finding it swept and tidied,
26 Allora va, chiama con sé altri sette spiriti più maligni di lui e tutti insieme entrano e vi prendono dimora. Così alla fine quell'uomo si trova peggio di prima".	26 it then goes off and brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and set uphouse there, and so that person ends up worse off than before.'
27 Mentre parlava così, una donna, dalla folla, alzò la voce e disse: "Beato il ventre che ti ha portato e il seno che ti ha allattato!".	27 It happened that as he was speaking, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said, 'Blessed thewomb that bore you and the breasts that fed you!'
28 Ma Gesù disse: "Beati piuttosto quelli che ascoltano la parola di Dio e la mettono in pratica".	28 But he replied, 'More blessed stil are those who hear the word of God and keep it!'
29 Mentre la gente si affollava intorno a Gesù, egli cominciò a dire: "Questa generazione è davvero una generazione malvagia: pretende un segno miracoloso, ma l'unico segno che le verrà dato sarà come quello di Giona.	29 The crowds got even bigger and he addressed them, 'This is an evil generation; it is asking for a sign.The only sign it wil be given is the sign of Jonah.
30 Infatti, come Giona fu un segno per gli abitanti di Ninive, così anche il Figlio dell'uomo sarà un segno per gli uomini di oggi.	30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so wil the Son of man be a sign to thisgeneration.
31 La regina del Mezzogiorno si alzerà, nel giorno del giudizio, a condannare questa gente: essa infatti venne dalle più lontane regioni della terra per ascoltare la sapienza di Salomone. Eppure, di fronte a voi sta uno che è più grande di Salomone.	31 On Judgement Day the Queen of the South will stand up against the people of this generation and betheir condemnation, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, look,there is something greater than Solomon here.
32 Gli uomini di Ninive si alzeranno nel giorno del giudizio a condannare questa gente: essi infatti si convertirono alla predicazione di Giona. Eppure, di fronte a voi sta uno che è più grande di Giona".	32 On Judgement Day the men of Nineveh wil appear against this generation and be its condemnation,because when Jonah preached they repented; and, look, there is something greater than Jonah here.
33 "Non si accende una lampada per poi metterla sotto un secchio o nasconderla, ma per deporla sopra il lucerniere, perché faccia luce a quelli che entrano nella casa.	33 'No one lights a lamp and puts it in some hidden place or under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand so that people may see the light when they come in.
34 La lucerna del corpo è il tuo occhio. Se il tuo occhio è buono, anche il tuo corpo è nella luce; se invece è malato, anche il tuo corpo è nelle tenebre.	34 The lamp of the body is your eye. When your eye is clear, your whole body, too, is fil ed with light; butwhen it is diseased your body, too, wil be darkened.
35 Perciò, bada che la luce che è in te non sia tenebra.	35 See to it then that the light inside you is not darkness.
36 Se dunque il tuo corpo è tutto nella luce, senza alcuna parte nelle tenebre, sarà tutto splendente, come quando una lampada ti illumina con il suo splendore".	36 If, therefore, your whole body is fil ed with light, and not darkened at all, it wil be light entirely, aswhen the lamp shines on you with its rays.'
37 Quando ebbe finito di parlare, un fariseo lo invitò a pranzo. Egli andò e si mise a tavola.	37 He had just finished speaking when a Pharisee invited him to dine at his house. He went in and satdown at table.
38 Quel fariseo si meravigliò che non avesse fatto le abluzioni prima del pranzo.	38 The Pharisee saw this and was surprised that he had not first washed before the meal.
39 Ma il Signore gli disse: "Voi farisei vi preoccupate di pulire l'esterno della coppa e del piatto, ma all'interno siete pieni di furti e di cattiverie.	39 But the Lord said to him, 'You Pharisees! You clean the outside of cup and plate, while insideyourselves you are fil ed with extortion and wickedness.
40 Stolti! Dio non ha forse creato l'esterno e l'interno dell'uomo?	40 Fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside too?
41 Date piuttosto in elemosina quello che c'è dentro, e allora tutto sarà puro per voi.	41 Instead, give alms from what you have and, look, everything wil be clean for you.
42 Guai a voi, farisei, perché pagate la decima della menta, della ruta e di tutte le erbe, ma poi trascurate la giustizia e l'amore di Dio. Queste cose sono da fare, senza trascurare le altre.	42 But alas for you Pharisees, because you pay your tithe of mint and rue and al sorts of garden herbsand neglect justice and the love of God! These you should have practised, without neglecting the others.
43 Guai a voi, farisei, perché amate il primo posto nelle sinagoghe e i saluti sulle piazze.	43 Alas for you Pharisees, because you like to take the seats of honour in the synagogues and to begreeted respectful y in the market squares!
44 Guai a voi, perché siete come i sepolcri che non si vedono e la gente vi passa sopra senza accorgersene".	44 Alas for you, because you are like the unmarked tombs that people walk on without knowing it!'
45 Allora un dottore della legge disse a Gesù: "Maestro, parlando così tu offendi anche noi".	45 A lawyer then spoke up. 'Master,' he said, 'when you speak like this you insult us too.'
46 Gesù rispose: "Guai anche a voi, dottori della legge, perché caricate gli uomini di pesi difficili a portare, ma voi non li toccate neppure con un dito.	46 But he said, 'Alas for you lawyers as wel , because you load on people burdens that are unendurable,burdens that you yourselves do not touch with your fingertips.
47 Guai a voi, perché edificate i sepolcri dei profeti che i vostri padri hanno ucciso.	47 'Alas for you because you build tombs for the prophets, the people your ancestors kil ed!
48 Così facendo, voi dimostrate di approvare ciò che i vostri padri hanno fatto: essi li uccisero e voi costruite loro le tombe.	48 In this way you both witness to what your ancestors did and approve it; they did the killing, you do thebuilding.
49 Per questo la Sapienza di Dio ha detto: "Manderò loro profeti e apostoli, ma essi li uccideranno e perseguiteranno".	49 'And that is why the Wisdom of God said, "I wil send them prophets and apostles; some they willslaughter and persecute,
50 Perciò a questa gente sarà chiesto conto del sangue di tutti i profeti, dalle origini del mondo in poi:	50 so that this generation wil have to answer for every prophet's blood that has been shed since thefoundation of the world,
51 dall'uccisione di Abele fino a quella di Zaccaria, che fu assassinato tra l'altare e il santuario. Sì, ve lo ripeto: di tutti questi misfatti verrà chiesto conto a questa gente.	51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the Temple."Yes, I tel you, this generation wil have to answer for it all.
52 Guai a voi, dottori della legge, perché avete tolto la chiave della scienza; voi non ci siete entrati e ne avete impedito l'accesso a quelli che volevano entrare".	52 'Alas for you lawyers who have taken away the key of knowledge! You have not gone in yourselvesand have prevented others from going in who wanted to.'
53 Quando fu uscito da quella casa, i dottori della legge e i farisei cominciarono a trattarlo con ostilità e a farlo parlare su argomenti di ogni genere;	53 When he left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began a furious attack on him and tried to forceanswers from him on innumerable questions,
54 così gli tendevano tranelli per coglierlo in fallo in qualche suo discorso.	54 lying in wait to catch him out in something he might say.
