LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Il giorno seguente Oloferne diede ordine a tutto il suo esercito e a tutta la moltitudine di coloro che si erano aggiunti a lui come alleati di muovere il campo contro Betulia, occupare le vie d'accesso della montagna e far la guerra contro gl'Israeliti.	1 The fol owing day Holofernes issued orders to his whole army and to the whole host of auxiliaries whohad joined him, to break camp and march on Bethulia, to occupy the mountain passes and so open thecampaign against the Israelites.
2 In quel giorno quindi ogni uomo valido tra loro si mise in marcia. L'esercito di quei guerrieri era di centosettantamila fanti e di dodicimila cavalieri, senza contare gli addetti ai servizi e altri uomini ch'erano con loro a piedi, in numero immenso.	2 The troops broke camp that same day. The actual fighting force numbered one hundred and twentythousand infantry and twelve thousand cavalry, not to mention the baggage train with the vast number of men onfoot concerned with that.
3 Si accamparono nella vallata vicino a Betulia presso la sorgente, estendendosi in profondità sopra Dotain fino a Belbain e in lunghezza da Betulia fino a Kiamon situata dirimpetto a Esdrelon.	3 They penetrated the val ey in the neighbourhood of Bethulia, near the spring, and deployed on a widefront from Dothan to Balbaim and, in depth, from Bethulia to Cyamon, which faces Esdraelon.
4 Quando videro la moltitudine di costoro, gl'Israeliti rimasero profondamente turbati e si dicevano l'un l'altro: "Ora costoro brucheranno la superficie di tutto il paese e né i monti più alti né le valli o le colline potranno resistere al loro peso".	4 When the Israelites saw this horde, they were al appal ed and said to each other, 'Now they wil lick thewhole country clean. Not even the loftiest peaks, the gorges or the hil s wil be able to stand the weight of them.'
5 Ognuno prese le proprie armi e dopo aver acceso fuochi sulle torri, stettero a fare la guardia per tutta quella notte.	5 Each man snatched up his arms; they lit beacons on their towers and spent the whole night on watch.
6 Il secondo giorno Oloferne fece uscire tutta la sua cavalleria alla vista degl'Israeliti ch'erano in Betulia,	6 On the second day Holofernes deployed his entire cavalry in sight of the Israelites in Bethulia.
7 ispezionò le vie d'accesso alla loro città e, ricercate le sorgenti d'acqua, le occupò collocandovi guarnigioni di uomini armati; quindi egli ritornò al suo esercito.	7 He reconnoitred the slopes leading up to the town, located the water-points, seized them and postedpickets over them and returned to the main body.
8 Allora gli si accostarono tutti i capi dei figli di Esaù, tutti i comandanti del popolo di Moab e gli strateghi della costa e gli dissero:	8 The chieftains of the sons of Esau, al the leaders of the Moabites and the generals of the coastal districtthen came to him and said,
9 "Voglia ascoltare il nostro signore una parola, per evitare qualunque guaio al tuo esercito.	9 'If our master wil be pleased to listen to us, his forces wil not sustain a single wound.
10 Questo popolo degl'Israeliti non fa affidamento tanto sulle proprie lance, quanto sull'altezza dei monti sui quali essi abitano; certo non è facile scalare le creste dei loro monti.	10 These Israelites do not rely so much on their spears as on the height of the mountains where they live.And admittedly it is not at all easy to scale these heights of theirs.
11 Pertanto, o signore, non combattere contro di loro, come si usa in una battaglia ordinata, così nessun uomo del tuo esercito cadrà.	11 'This being the case, master, avoid engaging them in a pitched battle and then you wil not lose a singleman.
12 Rimani nel tuo accampamento e fa' ivi rimanere ogni uomo del tuo esercito; i tuoi servitori s'impadroniscano della sorgente d'acqua, che scaturisce alla radice del monte,	12 Stay in camp, keep al your troops there too, while your servants seize the spring which rises at the footof the mountain,
13 perché di là attingono acqua tutti gli abitanti di Betulia. La sete li consumerà e consegneranno la loro città. Noi e la nostra gente saliremo sulle vicine creste dei monti, ci accamperemo su di esse per sorvegliare che nessun uomo esca dalla città.	13 since that is what provides the population of Bethulia with their water supply. Thirst wil then force themto surrender their town. Meanwhile, we and our men wil climb the nearest mountain tops and form advanceposts there to prevent anyone from leaving the town.
14 Saranno consunti dalla fame, loro, le loro mogli e i loro figli, e prima che la spada piombi su di loro, giaceranno distesi sulle piazze della loro dimora.	14 Hunger wil waste them, with their wives and children, and before the sword can reach them they wilalready be lying in the streets outside their houses.
15 Così darai loro un duro contraccambio, perché si sono ribellati e non sono voluti uscire pacificamente incontro alla tua persona".	15 And you will make them pay dearly for their defiance and their refusal to meet you peaceably.'
16 Il loro discorso piacque a Oloferne e a tutti i suoi ministri e perciò egli diede ordine di fare come avevano proposto.	16 Their words pleased Holofernes as wel as al his officers, and he decided to do as they suggested.
17 Si mosse un distaccamento di Moabiti e cinquemila Assiri con essi si accamparono nella vallata occupando i punti d'acqua e le sorgenti degl'Israeliti.	17 Accordingly, a troop of Moabites moved forward with a further five thousand Assyrians. Theypenetrated the val ey and seized the Israelites' waterpoints and springs.
18 Dal canto loro i figli di Esaù e gli Ammoniti salirono e si accamparono sulla montagna di fronte a Dotain, donde inviarono parte dei loro uomini verso meridione e ad oriente di fronte a Egrebel, situata vicino a Chus, sul torrente Mochmur. Il resto dell'esercito degli Assiri si accampò nella pianura, ricoprendo tutta la superficie del paese. Le tende e i loro equipaggiamenti, essendo molto ingenti, formavano un accampamento di grande mole.	18 Meanwhile the Edomites and Ammonites went and took up positions in the highlands opposite Dothan,sending some of their men to the south-east opposite Egrebel near Chous on the Wadi Mochmur. The rest of theAssyrian army took up positions in the plain, covering every inch of the ground; their tents and equipment madean immense encampment, so vast were their numbers.
19 Gl'Israeliti allora elevarono grida al Signore, loro Dio, con l'animo scoraggiato, poiché tutti i loro nemici li avevano circondati e non era possibile evadere di mezzo a loro.	19 The Israelites cal ed on the Lord their God, dispirited because the enemy had surrounded them and cutal line of retreat.
20 Il campo assiro al completo, fanti, carri e cavalli, proseguì l'accerchiamento per trentaquattro giorni, e a tutti gli abitanti di Betulia si esaurì ogni recipiente d'acqua.	20 For thirty-four days the Assyrian army, infantry, chariots, cavalrymen, had them surrounded. Everywater-jar the inhabitants of Bethulia had was empty,
21 Le cisterne si vuotarono e non ebbero acqua da bere a sazietà neppure per un giorno, perché veniva loro distribuita in misura razionata.	21 their storage-wel s were drying up; on no day could a man drink his fil , since their water was rationed.
22 I loro fanciulli si accasciavano, le donne e i giovani venivano meno per la sete e cadevano nelle piazze della città e agli sbocchi delle porte, non rimanendo in essi alcuna energia.	22 Their little children pined away, the women and young men grew weak with thirst; they col apsed in the streets and gateways of the town; they had no strength left.
23 Allora il popolo, giovani, donne e bambini, si radunò intorno a Ozia e ai capi della città; e gridarono ad alta voce dicendo al cospetto di tutti gli anziani:	23 Young men, women, children, the whole people thronged clamouring round Uzziah and the chief menof the town, shouting in the presence of the assembled elders,
24 "Che Dio sia giudice tra voi e noi, perché ci avete fatto un grave torto, non avendo svolto trattative di pace con gli Assiri.	24 'May God be judge between you and us! For you have done us great harm, by not suing for peace withthe Assyrians.
25 Ora non c'è nessuno che ci possa aiutare, perché Dio ci ha venduto nelle loro mani, per essere abbattuti davanti a loro dalla sete e da grande rovina.	25 And now there is no one to help us. God has delivered us into their hands to be prostrated before themin thirst and utter helplessness.
26 Ormai chiamateli e consegnate la città intera alla gente di Oloferne e a tutto il suo esercito perché la saccheggino.	26 Cal them in at once; hand the whole town over to be sacked by Holofernes' men and al his army.
27 E' meglio per noi diventare loro preda; saremo certo loro schiavi, ma almeno rimarremo vivi e non vedremo con i nostri occhi la morte dei nostri bambini, né le donne e i figli nostri esalare l'anima.	27 After al , we should be much better off as their booty than we are now; no doubt we shall be enslaved,but at least we shal be alive and not see our little ones dying before our eyes or our wives and childrenperishing.
28 Vi scongiuriamo per il cielo e la terra, per il nostro Dio e Signore dei nostri padri, che ci punisce secondo i nostri peccati e le colpe dei nostri padri, di agire oggi stesso come vi abbiamo detto".	28 By heaven and earth and by our God, the Lord of our fathers, who is punishing us for our sins and thesins of our ancestors, we implore you to take this course now, today.'
29 Vi fu allora un gran pianto generale di tutti in mezzo all'assemblea e a gran voce gridarono al Signore Dio.	29 Bitter lamentations rose from the whole assembly, and they all cried loudly to the Lord God.
30 Ozia disse loro: "Coraggio, fratelli, resistiamo ancora cinque giorni, durante i quali il Signore, nostro Dio, ci userà di nuovo misericordia; certo egli non ci abbandonerà fino all'ultimo.	30 Then Uzziah spoke to them, 'Take heart, brothers! Let us hold out five days more. By then the Lord ourGod will take pity on us, for he wil not desert us altogether.
31 Se, passati questi giorni, non ci giungerà alcun aiuto, farò come avete proposto".	31 At the end of this time, if no help is forthcoming, I shall do as you have said.'
32 Così rimandò il popolo, ciascuno nel suo quartiere; gli uomini ritornarono sulle mura e sulle torri della città, mentre rimandò le donne e i bambini alle loro case, ma nella città si stava in grande costernazione.	32 With that he dismissed the people to their various quarters. The men went to man the wal s and towersof the town, sending the women and children home. The town was ful of despondency.
