| 1 - Quando poi Rut fu tornata alla sua suocera, questa le disse: «Figlia mia, io cerco la tua pace, e voglio fare in modo che tu stia bene. | 1 Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, "My daughter, should I not seek a home for you, that it may be well with you? |
| 2 Questo Booz, con le cui operanti sei stata nel campo, è nostro parente; stanotte sventolerà il suo orzo sull'aia. | 2 Now is not Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens you were? See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. |
| 3 Lavati dunque, ungiti, mettiti le vesti migliori, e vai sull'aia. Fa' che non ti vegga, sinchè non avrà finito di mangiare e di bere. | 3 Wash therefore and anoint yourself, and put on your best clothes and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. |
| 4 Quando poi si metterà a dormire, osserva dove si mette; tu andrai, gli alzerai dalla parte dei piedi il mantello col quale è coperto, e lì ti stenderai e dormirai; egli stesso poi ti dirà quel che tu devi fare». | 4 But when he lies down, observe the place where he lies; then, go and uncover his feet and lie down; and he will tell you what to do." |
| 5 Disse Rut: «Farò tutto quello che mi dici». | 5 And she replied, "All that you say I will do." |
| 6 Scese sull'aia, e fece quanto la suocera le aveva suggerito. | 6 So she went down to the threshing floor and did just as her mother-in-law had told her. |
| 7 Avendo dunque Booz mangiato e bevuto, ed essendosi esilarato, andò a dormire vicino al monte dell'orzo; Rut venne furtivamente, ed alzatigli da piedi il mantello, si buttò giù. | 7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. Then she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and lay down. |
| 8 Ed ecco, a notte inoltrata, quegli ebbe paura, e si turbò vedendo una donna stesa a' suoi piedi, | 8 At midnight the man was startled, and turned over, and behold, a woman lay at his feet! |
| 9 e le disse: «Chi sei tu?». Ella rispose: «Sono Rut tua serva; stendi il tuo mantello sopra questa tua serva, poichè sei mio parente». | 9 He said, "Who are you?" And she answered, "I am Ruth, your maidservant; spread your skirt over your maidservant, for you are next of kin." |
| 10 Ed egli: «Benedetta tu sei dal Signore, figliuola; al merito che già avevi, ne hai aggiunto un altro più grande, perchè non sei andata in cerca di giovani, nè poveri nè ricchi. | 10 And he said, "May you be blessed by the LORD, my daughter; you have made this last kindness greater than the first, in that you have not gone after young men, whether poor or rich. |
| 11 Non temere dunque; ma qualunque cosa tu mi dica, io te la farò; perchè è noto a quanti abitano fra le mura della mia città che tu sei donna virtuosa. | 11 And now, my daughter, do not fear, I will do for you all that you ask, for all my fellow townsmen know that you are a woman of worth. |
| 12 Non nego d'essere tuo parente; ma ve n'è un altro, più prossimo di me. | 12 And now it is true that I am a near kinsman, yet there is a kinsman nearer than I. |
| 13 Riposati questa notte. Fatto giorno, se quegli vorrà prenderti per diritto di parentela, bene; se non vorrà, ti prenderò io senz'alcun dubbio, viva il Signore! Dormi sino al mattino». | 13 Remain this night, and in the morning, if he will do the part of the next of kin for you, well; let him do it; but if he is not willing to do the part of the next of kin for you, then, as the LORD lives, I will do the part of the next of kin for you. Lie down until the morning." |
| 14 Essa dunque dormì ai piedi di lui, sino al finir della notte, e s'alzò prima che la gente potesse cominciare a riconoscersi. Le disse Booz: «Bada che nessuno sappia che sei venuta qui». | 14 So she lay at his feet until the morning, but arose before one could recognize another; and he said, "Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor." |
| 15 Poi aggiunse: «Apri il mantello che hai addosso, e tienlo a due mani». Lo stese essa e lo tenne; egli vi ci mise sei misure d'orzo, e glielo pose sulle spalle. Così portandolo, rientrò in città, | 15 And he said, "Bring the mantle you are wearing and hold it out." So she held it, and he measured out six measures of barley, and laid it upon her; then she went into the city. |
| 16 e venne alla suocera. Disse questa: «Che hai fatto, figliuola?». Rut le raccontò tutto quello che Booz le aveva fatto, | 16 And when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, "How did you fare, my daughter?" Then she told her all that the man had done for her, |
| 17 e disse: «Mi ha dato queste sei misure d'orzo, dicendo: - Non voglio che tu torni alla tua suocera a mani vuote -». | 17 saying, "These six measures of barley he gave to me, for he said, 'You must not go back empty-handed to your mother-in-law.'" |
| 18 Disse Noemi: «Aspetta, figliuola, e vediamo come la cosa va a finire; egli non è uomo da ritirarsi sinchè non abbia condotto a termine quanto ha detto». | 18 She replied, "Wait, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out, for the man will not rest, but will settle the matter today." |
