| 1 - Quel che fu da principio, quel che abbiamo veduto con gli occhi nostri, quel che abbiamo contemplato e che le nostre mani han toccato del Verbo della vita - | 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life-- |
| 2 e la vita s'è manifestata, e noi l'abbiam veduta e l'attestiamo, e vi annunziamo la vita eterna, che era presso il Padre ed è apparsa a noi - | 2 the life was made manifest, and we saw it, and testify to it, and proclaim to you the eternal life which was with the Father and was made manifest to us-- |
| 3 quello [dico] che abbiam veduto e udito, lo annunziamo a voi, affinchè pur voi abbiate società con noi e la società nostra sia col Padre e col Figliuol suo Gesù Cristo. | 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. |
| 4 E questo vi scriviamo, affinchè ne godiate e il gaudio vostro sia pieno. | 4 And we are writing this that our joy may be complete. |
| 5 Ora l'annunzio, che da Lui abbiamo udito e trasmettiamo a voi, è questo: che Dio è luce e in Lui non vi son tenebre. | 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him is no darkness at all. |
| 6 Se diremo di aver società con Lui e camminiamo nelle tenebre, mentiamo e non mettiamo in pratica la verità. | 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth; |
| 7 Se invece camminiamo nella luce, come anch'egli è nella luce, abbiamo società scambievole, e il sangue di Gesù Cristo suo Figliuolo ci purifica da ogni peccato. | 7 but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. |
| 8 Se diremo si essere senza peccato, inganniamo noi stessi e la verità non è in noi. | 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. |
| 9 Se confessiamo i nostri peccati, [Dio] è fedele e giusto per rimetterci i nostri peccati e purificarci da ogni iniquità. | 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. |
| 10 Se diremo di non aver peccato, facciamo bugiardo Lui e la sua parola non è in noi. | 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. |
