Therefore, if there is any consolation in Christ, any solace of charity, any fellowship of the Spirit, any feelings of commiseration:1 So if in Christ there is anything that will move you, any incentive in love, any fel owship in the Spirit, anywarmth or sympathy -- I appeal to you,
complete my joy by having the same understanding, holding to the same charity, being of one mind, with the same sentiment.2 make my joy complete by being of a single mind, one in love, one in heart and one in mind.
Let nothing be done by contention, nor in vain glory. Instead, in humility, let each of you esteem others to be better than himself.3 Nothing is to be done out of jealousy or vanity; instead, out of humility of mind everyone should givepreference to others,
Let each of you not consider anything to be your own, but rather to belong to others.4 everyone pursuing not selfish interests but those of others.
For this understanding in you was also in Christ Jesus:5 Make your own the mind of Christ Jesus:
who, though he was in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be seized.6 Who, being in the form of God, did not count equality with God something to be grasped.
Instead, he emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and accepting the state of a man.7 But he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, becoming as human beings are; and being in everyway like a human being,
He humbled himself, becoming obedient even unto death, even the death of the Cross.8 he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross.
Because of this, God has also exalted him and has given him a name which is above every name,9 And for this God raised him high, and gave him the name which is above al other names;
so that, at the name of Jesus, every knee would bend, of those in heaven, of those on earth, and of those in hell,10 so that al beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name ofJesus
and so that every tongue would confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father.11 and that every tongue should acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
And so, my most beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but even more so now in my absence: work toward your salvation with fear and trembling.12 So, my dear friends, you have always been obedient; your obedience must not be limited to timeswhen I am present. Now that I am absent it must be more in evidence, so work out your salvation in fear andtrembling.
For it is God who works in you, both so as to choose, and so as to act, in accord with his good will.13 It is God who, for his own generous purpose, gives you the intention and the powers to act.
And do everything without murmuring or hesitation.14 Let your behaviour be free of murmuring and complaining
So may you be without blame, simple sons of God, without reproof, in the midst of a depraved and perverse nation, among whom you shine like lights in the world,15 so that you remain faultless and pure, unspoilt children of God surrounded by a deceitful andunderhand brood, shining out among them like bright stars in the world,
holding to the Word of Life, until my glory in the day of Christ. For I have not run in vain, nor have I labored in vain.16 proffering to it the Word of life. Then I shall have reason to be proud on the Day of Christ, for it wil notbe for nothing that I have run the race and toiled so hard.
Moreover, if I am to be immolated because of the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and give thanks with all of you.17 Indeed, even if my blood has to be poured as a libation over your sacrifice and the offering of yourfaith, then I shal be glad and join in your rejoicing-
And over this same thing, you also should rejoice and give thanks, together with me.18 and in the same way, you must be glad and join in my rejoicing.
Now I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, in order that I may be encouraged, when I know the things concerning you.19 I hope, in the Lord Jesus, to send Timothy to you soon, so that my mind may be set at rest when I hearhow you are.
For I have no one else with such an agreeable mind, who, with sincere affection, is solicitous for you.20 There is nobody else that I can send who is like him and cares as sincerely for your well-being;
For they all seek the things that are of themselves, not the things that are of Jesus Christ.21 they al want to work for themselves, not for Jesus Christ.
So know this evidence of him: that like a son with a father, so has he served with me in the Gospel.22 But you know what sort of person he has proved himself, working with me for the sake of the gospellike a son with his father.
Therefore, I hope to send him to you immediately, as soon as I see what will happen concerning me.23 That is the man, then, that I am hoping to send to you immediately I can make out what is going tohappen to me;
But I trust in the Lord that I myself will also return to you soon.24 but I am confident in the Lord that I shal come myself, too, before long.
Now I have considered it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and co-worker, and fellow soldier, and an attendant to my needs, but your Apostle.25 Nevertheless I thought it essential to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fel ow-worker andcompanion-in-arms since he came as your representative to look after my needs;
For certainly, he has desired all of you, and he was saddened because you had heard that he was sick.26 because he was missing you al and was worrying because you had heard that he was il .
For he was sick, even unto death, but God took pity on him, and not only on him, but truly on myself also, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow.27 Indeed he was seriously il and nearly died; but God took pity on him -- and not only on him but also onme, to spare me one grief on top of another.
Therefore, I sent him more readily, in order that, by seeing him again, you may rejoice, and I may be without sorrow.28 So I am sending him back as promptly as I can so that you wil have the joy of seeing him again, andthat wil be some comfort to me in my distress.
And so, receive him with every joy in the Lord, and treat all those like him with honor.29 Welcome him in the Lord, then, with al joy; hold people like him in honour,
For he was brought close even to death, for the sake of the work of Christ, handing over his own life, so that he might fulfill what was lacking from you concerning my service.30 because it was for Christ's work that he came so near to dying, risking his life to do the duty to mewhich you could not do yourselves.
