1 So then, what shall we say that Abraham had achieved, who is our father according to the flesh?	1 Che diremo dunque di Abramo, nostro progenitore secondo la carne? Che cosa ha ottenuto?
2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he would have glory, but not with God.	2 Se infatti Abramo è stato giustificato per le opere, ha di che gloriarsi, ma non davanti a Dio.
3 For what does Scripture say? “Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.”	3 Ora, che cosa dice la Scrittura? Abramo credette a Dio e ciò gli fu accreditato come giustizia.
4 But for he who works, wages are not accounted according to grace, but according to debt.	4 A chi lavora, il salario non viene calcolato come dono, ma come debito;
5 Yet truly, for he who does not work, but who believes in him who justifies the impious, his faith is reputed unto justice, according to the purpose of the grace of God.	5 a chi invece non lavora, ma crede in Colui che giustifica l’empio, la sua fede gli viene accreditata come giustizia.
6 Similarly, David also declares the blessedness of a man, to whom God brings justice without works:	6 Così anche Davide proclama beato l’uomo a cui Dio accredita la giustizia indipendentemente dalle opere:
7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities have been forgiven and whose sins have been covered.	7 Beati quelli le cui iniquità sono state perdonate e i peccati sono stati ricoperti;
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord has not imputed sin.”	8 beato l’uomo al quale il Signore non mette in conto il peccato!
9 Does this blessedness, then, remain only in the circumcised, or is it even in the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was reputed to Abraham unto justice.	9 Ora, questa beatitudine riguarda chi è circonciso o anche chi non è circonciso? Noi diciamo infatti che la fede fu accreditata ad Abramo come giustizia.
10 But then how was it reputed? In circumcision or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.	10 Come dunque gli fu accreditata? Quando era circonciso o quando non lo era? Non dopo la circoncisione, ma prima.
11 For he received the sign of circumcision as a symbol of the justice of that faith which exists apart from circumcision, so that he might be the father of all those who believe while uncircumcised, so that it might also be reputed to them unto justice,	11 Infatti egli ricevette il segno della circoncisione come sigillo della giustizia, derivante dalla fede, già ottenuta quando non era ancora circonciso. In tal modo egli divenne padre di tutti i non circoncisi che credono, cosicché anche a loro venisse accreditata la giustizia
12 and he might be the father of circumcision, not only for those who are of circumcision, but even for those who follow the footsteps of that faith which is in the uncircumcision of our father Abraham.	12 ed egli fosse padre anche dei circoncisi, di quelli che non solo provengono dalla circoncisione ma camminano anche sulle orme della fede del nostro padre Abramo prima della sua circoncisione.
13 For the Promise to Abraham, and to his posterity, that he would inherit the world, was not through the law, but through the justice of faith.	13 Infatti non in virtù della Legge fu data ad Abramo, o alla sua discendenza, la promessa di diventare erede del mondo, ma in virtù della giustizia che viene dalla fede.
14 For if those who are of the law are the heirs, then faith becomes empty and the Promise is abolished.	14 Se dunque diventassero eredi coloro che provengono dalla Legge, sarebbe resa vana la fede e inefficace la promessa.
15 For the law works unto wrath. And where there is no law, there is no law-breaking.	15 La Legge infatti provoca l’ira; al contrario, dove non c’è Legge, non c’è nemmeno trasgressione.
16 Because of this, it is from faith according to grace that the Promise is ensured for all posterity, not only for those who are of the law, but also for those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all before God,	16 Eredi dunque si diventa in virtù della fede, perché sia secondo la grazia, e in tal modo la promessa sia sicura per tutta la discendenza: non soltanto per quella che deriva dalla Legge, ma anche per quella che deriva dalla fede di Abramo, il quale è padre di tutti noi –
17 in whom he believed, who revives the dead and who calls those things that do not exist into existence. For it is written: “I have established you as the father of many nations.”	17 come sta scritto: Ti ho costituito padre di molti popoli – davanti al Dio nel quale credette, che dà vita ai morti e chiama all’esistenza le cose che non esistono.
18 And he believed, with a hope beyond hope, so that he might become the father of many nations, according to what was said to him: “Thus shall your posterity shall be.”	18 Egli credette, saldo nella speranza contro ogni speranza, e così divenne padre di molti popoli, come gli era stato detto: Così sarà la tua discendenza.
19 And he was not weakened in faith, nor did he consider his own body to be dead (though he was then almost one hundred years old), nor the womb of Sarah to be dead.	19 Egli non vacillò nella fede, pur vedendo già come morto il proprio corpo – aveva circa cento anni – e morto il seno di Sara.
20 And then, in the Promise of God, he did not hesitate out of distrust, but instead he was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,	20 Di fronte alla promessa di Dio non esitò per incredulità, ma si rafforzò nella fede e diede gloria a Dio,
21 knowing most fully that whatever God has promised, he is also able to accomplish.	21 pienamente convinto che quanto egli aveva promesso era anche capace di portarlo a compimento.
22 And for this reason, it was reputed to him unto justice.	22 Ecco perché gli fu accreditato come giustizia.
23 Now this has been written, that it was reputed to him unto justice, not only for his sake,	23 E non soltanto per lui è stato scritto che gli fu accreditato,
24 but also for our sake. For the same shall be reputed to us, if we believe in him who raised up our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead,	24 ma anche per noi, ai quali deve essere accreditato: a noi che crediamo in colui che ha risuscitato dai morti Gesù nostro Signore,
25 who was handed over because of our offenses, and who rose again for our justification.	25 il quale è stato consegnato alla morte a causa delle nostre colpe ed è stato risuscitato per la nostra giustificazione.
