Sirach 46

1 Joshua, the son of Nun, was valiant in warfare; he was the successor of Moses among the prophets. He was great in accord with his name,	1 Forte in guerra fu Gesù figliuolo di Nave successore di Mosè nel dono di profezia, egli fu grande come porta il suo nome.
2 very great in the saving the elect of God. He fought against the insurgent enemies, so that he might obtain the inheritance for Israel.	2 Egli fu più che grande nel salvare gli eletti di Dio, nel domare i nemici, che se gli opponevano, e nel conquistare per Israele la sua eredità.
3 What great glory he secured, by lifting up his hands and throwing his spears against the cities!	3 Quanta gloria acquistò egli in tenendo alta la mano, e vibrando la spada contro quella città!
4 Who before him has stood so firmly? For the Lord himself led forward the enemies.	4 Chi avanti a lui combattè in tal guisa? Imperocché il Signore stesso condusse nelle mani di lui i nemici.
5 Was not the sun halted by his wrath, and one day made as if two?	5 Lo zelo di lui non fermò egli il sole, onde un sol giorno fu come due?
6 He called upon the Most High Power, when the enemies assailed him on every side. And the great and holy God answered him with hailstones of exceedingly great force.	6 Mentre da tutte parti i nemici lo combattevano, egli invocò l'Altissimo onnipotente, e il grande, e santo Iddio lo esaudì mandando grandine furiosa di pietre.
7 He made a violent assault against a hostile nation, and at his descent, he destroyed his adversaries,	7 Egli si scagliò impetuosamente sopra la gente nimica, e sterminò gli avversarj nella discesa,
8 so that the nations would acknowledge his power: that it is not easy to fight against God. And he followed the Almighty.	8 Affinchè conoscesser le genti, la possanza di Dio, e come non è agevol cosa il combattere contro di lui. Egli seguitò sempre l'onnipotente;
9 And in the days of Moses, he accomplished a work of mercy. He and Caleb, the son of Jephuneh, stood against the enemy, and forbid the people from sin, and broke their wicked murmuring.	9 Egli a tempo di Mosè insieme con Caleb figliuolo di Jephone fece una buona opera, risoluti a mostrar la faccia al nimico, trattenendo il popolo dal peccare, e sedando le maliziose mormorazioni.
10 And these two, having been appointed, were freed from peril, from foot soldiers numbering six hundred thousand, so as to lead them into their inheritance, into a land flowing with milk and honey.	10 Ed eglino faron que' due, i quali del numero di secento mila fanti usciròn salvi d'ogni pericolo per condurre il popolo al possesso della terra, che scorre latte, e miele.
11 And the Lord gave strength to Caleb also, and his strength remained even in his old age, so that he ascended to the high places of the land, and his offspring obtained it as an inheritance.	11 E allo stesso Caleb, il Signore diede gran valore, e anche nella vecchiaia egli fu sempre robusto, onde salì a quel luogo eminente nella terra promessa, il quale fa il retaggio della sua stirpe:
12 This was so that all the sons of Israel would see that it is good to obey the holy God.	12 Affinchè tutti i figliuoli d'Israele vedessero come buona cosa ella è l'ubbidire al santo Iddio.
13 Then there were the judges, each one called by name, whose heart was not corrupted. They did not turn away from the Lord,	13 E i giudici notati ciascuno pel raro nome, il cuore de' quali non fu cattivo, perché non si allontanarono dal Signore,
14 so that their memory might be blessed, and their bones might spring forth from their place,	14 Sia in benedizione la loro memoria, e le loro ossa di là rifioriscano, dove riposano,
15 and their name might remain forever, continuing in their sons, holy men of glory.	15 E duri in eterno il loro nome, e passi a' loro figliuoli colla gloria di que' santi uomini.
16 Samuel, prophet of the Lord, beloved by the Lord his God, established a new government, and he anointed leaders over his people.	16 Samuele caro al Signore Dio suo, profeta del Signore fondò nuovo impero, ed unse i principi del popol suo.
17 By the law of the Lord, he judged the congregation, and the God of Jacob saw it, and so, by his fidelity, he was proven to be a prophet.	17 Egli giudicò la sinagoga secondo la legge del Signore, e Iddio visitò Giacobbe, ed egli per la sua fedeltà fu riconosciuto per profeta.
18 And he was known to be faithful in his words. For he saw the God of light.	18 E si vide come egli era fedele nelle sue parole, e come avea veduto il Dio della luce:
19 And when fighting against the enemies, who stood against him on every side, he called upon the name of the Almighty Lord, with an offering of an inviolate lamb.	19 Egli invocò il Signore onnipotente mentre i nemici lo stringevano da tutte parti, e offerse agnello immacolato.
20 And the Lord thundered from heaven, and with a great noise, he made his voice to be heard.	20 E il Signore tuonò dall cielo, e tra grandi strepiti fece udir la sua voce,
21 And he crushed the leaders of the Tyrians, and all the commanders of the Philistines.	21 E conquise i principi di tiro, e tutti i duci de' Filistei:
22 And before the time of the end of his life in the world, he offered testimony in the sight of the Lord and of his Christ, that he had not taken a bribe from any flesh, not even so much as a shoe, and that no man made an accusation against him.	22 E prima che terminasse di vivere, e si partisse dal mondo protestò dinanzi al Signore, e dinanzi al suo Cristo, come da verun uomo non avea preso denaro, e nemmeno un paio di calzari, e nissun uomo potè accusarlo.
23 And after this, he slept. And he made known to the king and revealed to him the end of his life. And he lifted up his voice from the earth in prophecy, to abolish the impiety of the people.	23 Indi si addormentò, e predisse, e notificò al re il fine della sua vita, e alzò la sua voce di sotto terra profetando la distruzione dell'empietà del popolo.
