1 She directed their works in the hands of the holy prophet.	1 C'est elle qui a dirigé leurs oeuvres par les mains d'un saint prophète.
2 They made a path through desolate areas, which were uninhabited, and set up their homes in remote places.	2 Ils ont marché par des lieux inhabités, et ont dressé leurs tentes dans les déserts.
3 They stood firm against the enemy, and vindicated themselves from their adversaries.	3 Ils ont tenu bon contre les ennemis, et se sont vengés de leurs adversaires.
4 They thirsted, and they called upon you, and water was given them out of the deepest rock, and respite from thirst out of the hard stone.	4 Ils ont eu soif, et ils Vous ont invoqué, et Vous leur avez donné de l'eau d'un rocher élevé, et Vous avez désaltéré leur soif au moyen d'une pierre dure.
5 For through water, their enemies had been punished, by the corruption of their drinking water; and so, among them, when the sons of Israel lacked the abundance they would have had, their enemies rejoiced;	5 Car, de même que leurs ennemis avaient été punis en ne trouvant pas d'eau, alors que les enfants d'Israël étaient dans l'abondance et dans la joie,
6 yet though water, when they were in need, it turned out well for them.	6 au contraire, ceux-ci furent privilégiés lorsqu'ils se trouvèrent dans le besoin.
7 For instead of a fountain, even everlasting in flow, you gave human blood to the unjust,	7 En effet, au lieu des eaux d'un fleuve intarissable, Vous avez donné du sang humain aux méchants.
8 and while they would be crushed into disgrace because of the murdering of infants, you unexpectedly gave your own abundant water,	8 Et tandis que leur nombre diminuait, en punition du meurtre des enfants, Vous donniez à Votre peuple une eau abondante, d'une manière inespérée,
9 revealing through the thirst, which occurred at that time, how you would exalt your own and would kill their adversaries.	9 montrant, par la soif qu'il endura alors, comment Vous relevez ceux qui sont à Vous, et Vous faites périr leurs adversaires.
10 For when they were being tested, and even when receiving merciful correction, they knew in what way, when your wrath judged the impious, they would suffer torments.	10 Car après avoir été éprouvés, mais par un châtiment mêlé de miséricorde, il surent de quelle manière sont tourmentés les impies quand Vous les jugez avec colère.
11 For these, advising like a father, you approved; but the others, interrogating like a severe king, you condemned.	11 Vous avez éprouvé les uns comme un père qui avertit; et Vous avez condamné les autres comme un roi sévère qui demande des comptes.
12 For whether absent or present, they were tortured alike.	12 Soit absents, soit présents, ils étaient également tourmentés.
13 For they had received double: weariness and groaning in the remembrance of things past.	13 Car, au souvenir du passé, ils trouvaient un double sujet d'ennui et de gémissement.
14 For when they paid attention to their punishments, to attend to their own benefit, they called to mind the Lord, admiring the end result.	14 En apprenant que ce qui avait fait leur tourment était devenu un bien pour les autres, ils se ressouvinrent du Seigneur, et admirèrent l'issue des choses.
15 For though they showed scorn by throwing out distorted statements, in the end they were amazed at the result, but this is not the same as thirsting for justice.	15 Car celui qui avait été le sujet de leurs railleries, à cause de la cruelle exposition à laquelle il avait été abandonné, fut à la fin l'occasion de leur étonnement, quand leur soif fut si différente de celle des justes.
16 For according to the thinking of their irrational iniquity, because some, going astray, were worshiping mute serpents and worthless beasts, you sent upon them a multitude of mute beasts for vengeance,	16 Pour punir les pensées extravagantes de leur iniquité, et l'égarement qui leur faisait adorer des serpents muets et des bêtes méprisables, Vous avez envoyé contre eux, par vengeance, une multitude d'animaux muets,
17 so that they might know that by whatever things a man sins, by the same also is he tormented.	17 afin qu'ils sussent que l'on est tourmenté par où l'on a péché.
18 For it was not impossible for your all-powerful hand, which created the world from unknown material, to send forth upon them a multitude of bears, or fierce lions,	18 Car il n'était pas difficile à Votre main toute-puissante, qui a créé l'univers d'une matière informe, d'envoyer contre eux une multitude d'ours, ou des lions féroces,
19 or, in anger, beasts of a new kind, massive and strange, either breathing out a fiery vapor, or sending forth an odorous smoke, or shooting horrible sparks from their eyes;	19 ou des bêtes d'une espèce nouvelle et inconnue, pleines de fureur, respirant une vapeur de feu, ou répandant une fumée infecte, ou lançant par leurs yeux d'horribles étincelles,
20 whereby, not only wounds would be able to destroy them, but also the very sight would kill them through fear.	20 capables non seulement de les exterminer par leur morsure, mais de les faire mourir de frayeur par leur seul aspect.
21 Yet, even without these, they could have been killed with one breath, suffering persecution of their own making and being scattered by your spirit of virtue; but you have ordered all things in size and number and weight.	21 Et même sans cela ils pouvaient périr d'un seul souffle, poursuivis par leurs propres crimes et renversés par le souffle de Votre puissance; mais Vous avez réglé toutes choses avec mesure, et avec nombre, et avec poids.
22 Though many are strong, you alone always overcome. And who will withstand the strength of your arm?	22 Car la souveraine puissance est à Vous seul, et Vous demeure toujours; et qui pourra résister à la force de Votre bras?
23 For, like a tiny grain on a scale, just so is the world before you, and like a drop dew before dawn, which descends upon the earth.	23 Car le monde est devant Vous comme le grain qui fait incliner la balance, et comme la goutte de rosée qui tombe sur la terre avant l'aurore.
24 But you are merciful to all, because you can do all, and you dismiss the sins of man because of repentance.	24 Mais Vous avez pitié de tous, parce que Vous pouvez tout; et Vous dissimulez les péchés des hommes, pour qu'ils fassent pénitence.
25 For you love all things that are, and you hate nothing of the things you have made; for you would not have created or established anything that you hated.	25 Vous aimez tout ce qui est, et Vous ne haïssez rien de tout ce que Vous avez fait; car, si Vous l'aviez haï, Vous ne l'auriez point établi ni créé.
26 For how could anything endure, except by your will? Or what, having been called by you not to exist, would be preserved?	26 Comment une chose pourrait-elle subsister, si Vous ne le vouliez pas? ou comment ce que Vous n'auriez pas appelé à la vie serait-il conservé?
27 Yet you spare all things, because they are yours, O Lord, who loves souls.	27 Mais Vous pardonnez à tous parce que tout est à Vous, Seigneur, qui aimez les âmes.
