Then Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and he was buried with them in the City of David. And his son, Jehoram, reigned in his place.1 Josaphat se coucha avec ses pères et on l’enterra avec ses pères dans la Cité de David; Joram, son fils, régna à sa place.
And he had brothers, sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, and Jehiel, and Zechariah, and Azariah, and Michael, and Shephatiah. All these were sons of Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah.2 Il avait six frères, tous fils de Josaphat: Azarias, Yéhiel, Zékaryas, Azarias, Mikaël, Chefatyas; ce sont là les fils de Josaphat, roi d’Israël.
And their father gave to them many gifts of silver, and gold, and valuables, with very fortified cities in Judah. But the kingdom he handed on to Jehoram, because he was the firstborn.3 Leur père leur avait fait des dons importants en argent, en bijoux et en villes fortifiées en Juda, mais il avait laissé la royauté à Joram, car il était l’aîné.
Therefore, Jehoram rose up over the kingdom of his father. And when he had established himself, he killed with the sword all his brothers, and certain ones from the leaders of Israel.4 Joram prit la succession royale de son père et, dès qu’il se sentit fort, il tua par l’épée tous ses frères et même quelques chefs en Israël.
Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he had begun to reign. And he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem.5 Joram avait 32 ans lorsqu’il monta sur le trône et il régna 8 ans à Jérusalem.
And he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done. For his wife was a daughter of Ahab, and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.6 Il suivit les traces des rois d’Israël, agissant comme faisait la maison d’Akab - sa femme était en effet une fille d’Akab - et il fit ce qui est mal au regard de Yahvé.
But the Lord was not willing to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had formed with him, and because he had promised that he would provide a lamp to him, and to his sons, for all time.7 Cependant Yahvé ne voulut pas détruire la maison de David à cause de l’alliance qu’il avait faite avec David: il lui avait promis de lui garder toujours une lampe allumée, ainsi qu’à ses fils.
In those days, Edom rebelled, so as not to be subject to Judah, and they appointed for themselves a king.8 Durant ses jours, Édom se libéra de la domination de Juda et se donna un roi.
And when Jehoram had gone across with his leaders, and all the horsemen who were with him, he arose in the night, and struck the Edomites (who had surrounded him), and all the commanders of his horsemen.9 Joram franchit alors la frontière avec ses chefs et tous ses chars. Avec ses commandants de chars, il se leva de nuit et battit les Édomites qui l’encerclaient.
Even so, Edom rebelled, so as not to be under the authority of Judah, even to this day. Also at that time, Libnah withdrew, so as not to be under his hand. For he had forsaken the Lord, the God of his fathers.10 Mais depuis ce jour et jusqu’à maintenant, Édom s’est libéré de la domination de Juda. Libna également se libéra de la domination de Juda en ces jours-là, car Joram avait abandonné Yahvé, le Dieu de ses pères.
Moreover, he also constructed high places in the cities of Judah. And he caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to fornicate, and Judah to prevaricate.11 Joram établit même des Hauts-Lieux dans les villes de Juda, ce qui incita les habitants de Jérusalem à se prostituer et les Judéens à s’égarer.
Then letters were conveyed to him from the prophet Elijah, in which it was written: “Thus says the Lord, the God of David, your father: Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat, your father, nor in the ways of Asa, the king of Judah,12 On lui porta alors un écrit du prophète Élie qui disait ceci: “Ainsi parle Yahvé le Dieu de David ton père: Tu n’as pas suivi les traces de Josaphat ton père, ni celles d’Aza roi de Juda,
but instead you have advanced along the paths of the kings of Israel, and you have caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to fornicate, imitating the fornication of the house of Ahab, and moreover, you have killed your brothers, the house of your father, who are better than you:13 mais tu as suivi les traces des rois d’Israël et tu as poussé Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem à se prostituer comme le fait la maison d’Akab. Tu as même tué tes frères, - la famille de ton père! - qui étaient meilleurs que toi;
behold, the Lord will strike you with a great plague, with all your people, and your sons and wives, and all your substance.14 aussi Yahvé va frapper d’un grand malheur ton peuple, tes fils, tes femmes et tout ce qui est à toi.
And you shall be sickened by a very grievous disease of your bowels, until your inner organs depart, little by little, each day.”15 Tu auras de terribles souffrances aux intestins et, sous l’effet du mal, les boyaux te sortiront du corps jour après jour.”
Therefore, the Lord stirred up, against Jehoram, the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians, who are along the borders of the Ethiopians.16 Yahvé excita contre Joram la malveillance des Philistins et des Arabes voisins des Kouchites.
And they ascended into the land of Judah. And they laid waste to it. And they despoiled all the substance that was found in the house of the king, including even his sons and wives. Neither did there remain for him any son, except Jehoahaz, who was the youngest born.17 Ils montèrent contre Juda, l’envahirent et enlevèrent tout ce qu’ils trouvèrent dans le palais royal, ainsi que les fils de Joram et ses femmes; il ne lui resta plus qu’un fils, le plus jeune, Okozias.
And in addition to all these things, the Lord struck him with an incurable disease of the bowels.18 Après tout cela Yahvé le frappa au ventre d’une maladie incurable.
And as day followed after day, and the space of time turned, the course of two years was completed. And after having been wasted by a long consumption, so much so that even his inner organs were discharged, the disease ended along with his life. And so he died of a very grievous illness. And the people did not make a funeral for him, according to the custom of burning, as they had done for his ancestors.19 Au bout de quelque temps - deux ans s’étaient écoulés - ses boyaux sortirent sous l’effet du mal et il mourut dans de terribles souffrances. Son peuple ne lui fit pas de feu comme on en avait fait pour ses pères.
He was thirty-two years old when he had begun to reign, and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem. And he did not walk uprightly. And they buried him in the City of David, yet truly, not in the sepulcher of the kings.20 Il était âgé de 32 ans quand il monta sur le trône et il régna 8 ans à Jérusalem. Quand il partit, personne ne le regretta; on l’enterra bien dans la Cité de David, mais pas dans les tombes royales.
