CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
And Solomon resolved to build a house to the name of the Lord, and a palace for himself.1 Entonces reclutó setenta mil hombres para transportar cargas y ochenta mil para extraer las piedras de las montañas, y puso tres mil seiscientos capataces al frente de ellos.
And he numbered seventy thousand men to carry upon shoulders, and eighty thousand who were hewing stones in the mountains, and three thousand six hundred as their overseers.2 Salomón mandó a decir a Jiram, rey de Tiro: «Haz conmigo lo mismo que hiciste con mi padre David, cuando le enviaste maderas de cedro para que se construyera una casa donde habitar.
Also, he sent to Hiram, the king of Tyre, saying: “Just as you did for my father David, when you sent him cedar wood, so that he might build a house for himself, in which he then lived,3 Ahora yo voy a construir una Casa para el nombre del Señor, mi Dios, y voy a consagrarla a él para quemar incienso aromático en su presencia, para presentar las ofrendas dispuestas continuamente, y para ofrecer los holocaustos de la mañana y de la tarde, de los sábados, los novilunios y las solemnidades del Señor, nuestro Dios, y eso para siempre en Israel.
do so also for me, so that I may build a house to the name of the Lord my God, so that I may consecrate it for the burning of incense before him, and for the smoke of aromatics, and for the perpetual bread of the presence, and for the holocausts, in morning and in evening, as well as on the Sabbaths and new moons and solemnities of the Lord our God forever, which have been commanded to Israel.4 La Casa que voy a construir será grande, porque nuestro Dios es más grande que todos los dioses.
For the house that I desire to build is great.
So then, who will be able prevail, so that he may build a worthy house for him? If heaven and the heavens of heavens cannot contain him, what am I that I would be able to build a house to him? But let it be for this only, so that incense may be burned before him.6 Envíame, entonces, un hombre hábil en trabajar el oro, la plata, el bronce, el hierro, la púrpura escarlata, el carmesí y la púrpura violeta, y que sepa esculpir; él trabajará con los artesanos que tengo conmigo en Judá y en Jerusalén, y que mi padre David había puesto a mi disposición.
Therefore, send to me a learned man, who knows how to work with gold and silver, with brass and iron, with purple, scarlet, and hyacinth, and who knows how to carve engravings, along with these artisans that I have with me in Judea and Jerusalem, whom my father David has prepared.7 Envíame también madera de cedro, de ciprés y de sándalo del Líbano, porque sé que tus servidores saben talar los árboles del Líbano. Mis servidores trabajarán con los tuyos
Then too, send to me cedar wood, and juniper, and pine from Lebanon. For I know that your servants know how to cut timber from Lebanon, and my servants will be with your servants,8 para prepararme madera en abundancia, porque la Casa que quiero construir será grande y digna de admiración.
so that very much wood may be prepared for me. For the house that I desire to build is exceedingly great and glorious.9 Yo daré a los que corten la madera veinte mil cargas de trigo y otras tantas de cebada, veinte mil barriles de vino y otros tantos de aceite: todo esto para el mantenimiento de tus servidores».
In addition, I will give to your servants, the workers who will cut down the trees, for provisions: twenty thousand cor of wheat, and the same number of cor of barley, and twenty thousand measures of wine, as well as twenty thousand good measures of oil.”10 Jiram, rey de Tiro, respondió en una carta que envió al rey Salomón: «Por el amor que el Señor tiene a su pueblo te ha constituido rey sobre él».
Then Hiram, the king of Tyre, said, by a letter that had been sent to Solomon: “Because the Lord loved his people, for this reason he appointed you to reign over them.”11 Y agregaba: «¡Bendito sea el Señor, el Dios de Israel! El hizo el cielo y la tierra, y dio al rey David un hijo sabio, prudente e inteligente que construirá una Casa para el Señor y un palacio real para sí mismo.
And he added, saying: “Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, who made heaven and earth, who gave to king David a son who is wise, and learned, and intelligent as well as prudent, so that he may build a house to the Lord, and a palace for himself.12 Por eso, ahora te envió a Juram Abí, un hombre hábil e inteligente,
Therefore, I have sent my father Hiram to you; he is a prudent and very knowledgeable man,13 hijo de una mujer danita, cuyo padre era de Tiro.
the son of a woman from the daughters of Dan, whose father was a Tyrian, who knows how to work with gold and silver, with brass and iron, and with marble and timber, as well as with purple, and hyacinth, and fine linen, and scarlet. And he knows how to carve every kind of engraving, and how to devise prudently whatever may be necessary to the work, with your artisans and with the artisans of my lord David, your father.14 Que mi señor envíe a sus servidores el trigo, la cebada, el aceite y el vino que ha prometido:
Therefore, send the wheat and barley and oil and wine, which you, my lord, have promised, to your own servants.15 nosotros cortaremos toda la madera del Líbano que necesites y te la llevaremos en balsas, por mar, hasta Jope; y luego tú mandarás que la suban a Jerusalén».
Then we will cut down as much wood from Lebanon as you will need, and we will convey them as rafts by sea to Joppa. Then it will be for you to transfer them to Jerusalem.”16 Salomón hizo el censo de todos los extranjeros residentes en Israel, semejante al que había hecho su padre David, y se comprobó que estos eran ciento cincuenta y tres mil seiscientos.
And so Solomon numbered all the new converts who were in the land of Israel, after the numbering that David his father had done, and they were found to be one hundred fifty thousand and three thousand six hundred.17 Destinó a setenta mil de ellos para transportar las cargas, a ochenta mil para extraer las piedras de las montañas, y puso al frente de ellos a tres mil seiscientos capataces para hacer trabajar al pueblo.
And he appointed seventy thousand of them, who would carry burdens on shoulders, and eighty thousand who would hew stones in the mountains, then three thousand and six hundred as overseers of the work of the people.
