1 Holofernes, general-in-chief of the Assyrian army, received the intel igence that the Israelites werepreparing for war, that they had closed the mountain passes, fortified al the high peaks and laid obstructions inthe plains.	1 cf2Alors Tobie répondit à son père, et lui dit : Mon père, je ferai tout ce que vous m'avez ordonné.
2 Holofernes was furious. He summoned al the princes of Moab, al the generals of Ammon and al thesatraps of the coastal regions.	2 Mais je ne sais comment je retirerai cet argent. Cet homme ne me connaît pas, et je ne le connais pas non plus ; quelle preuve lui donnerai-je ? Je n'ai même jamais connu le chemin par où l'on va là-bas.
3 'Men of Canaan,' he said, 'tel me: what people is this that occupies the hill-country? What towns does itinhabit? How large is its army? What are the sources of its power and strength? Who is the king who rules it andcommands its army?	3 Alors son père lui répondit, et lui dit : J'ai son obligation (seing) entre les mains, et aussitôt que tu la lui auras montrée, il te rendra l'argent.
4 Why have they disdained to wait on me, as all the western peoples have?'	4 Mais va maintenant, et cherche quelque homme fidèle qui aille avec toi moyennant un salaire, afin que tu reçoives cet argent pendant que je vis encore.
5 Achior, leader of al the Ammonites, replied, 'May my lord be pleased to listen to what your servant isgoing to say. I shall give you the facts about these mountain folk whose home lies close to you. You wil hear nolie from the mouth of your servant.	5 Alors Tobie, étant sorti, trouva un beau jeune homme (magnifique) debout, ceint et comme prêt à marcher.
6 These people are descended from the Chaldaeans.	6 Et ignorant que c'était un ange de Dieu, il le salua, et dit : D'où viens-tu (es-tu), bon jeune homme ?
7 They once came to live in Mesopotamia, because they did not want to fol ow the gods of their ancestorswho lived in Chaldaea.	7 Il répondit : D'avec les fils d'Israël. Tobie lui dit : Connais-tu le chemin qui conduit au pays des Mèdes ?
8 They abandoned the way of their ancestors to worship the God of heaven, the God they learnt toacknowledge. Banished from the presence of their own gods, they fled to Mesopotamia where they lived for along time.	8 Et il lui répondit : Je le connais ; j'ai souvent parcouru tous ces chemins, et j'ai demeuré chez Gabélus notre frère, qui demeure à Ragès, ville des Mèdes, qui est située dans la montagne d'Ecbatane.
9 When God told them to leave their home and set out for Canaan, they settled there and accumulatedgold and silver and great herds of cattle.	9 Tobie lui dit : Attends-moi, je te prie, jusqu'à ce que j'aie annoncé ces choses à mon père.
10 Next, famine having overwhelmed the land of Canaan, they went down to Egypt where they stayed tilthey were well nourished. There they became a great multitude, a race beyond counting.	10 Alors Tobie, étant rentré, raconta tout cela à son père ; sur quoi le père, saisi d'admiration, demanda que ce jeune homme entrât auprès de lui.
11 But the king of Egypt turned against them and exploited them by forcing them to make bricks; hedegraded them, reducing them to slavery.	11 Etant donc entré, il salua Tobie, et dit : Que la joie soit toujours avec vous.
12 They cried to their God, who struck the entire land of Egypt with incurable plagues, and the Egyptiansexpel ed them.	12 Tobie répondit : Quelle joie puis-je avoir, moi qui suis dans les ténèbres, et qui ne vois pas la lumière du ciel ?
13 God dried up the Red Sea before them	13 Le jeune homme lui dit : Ayez bon courage, le temps approche où Dieu doit vous guérir.
14 and led them forward by way of Sinai and Kadesh-Barnea. Having driven off all the inhabitants of thedesert,	14 Alors Tobie lui dit : Pourras-tu conduire mon fils chez Gabélus à Ragès, ville des Mèdes ? Et quand tu seras de retour, je te donnerai ce qui te sera dû.
15 they settled in the land of the Amorites and in their strength exterminated the entire population ofHeshbon. Then, having crossed the Jordan, they took possession of al the hil -country,	15 L'ange lui dit : Je le conduirai, et le ramènerai auprès de vous.
16 driving out the Canaanites before them and the Perizzites, Jebusites, Shechemites and all theGirgashites, and lived there for many years.	16 Tobie lui répondit : Indique-moi, je te prie, de quelle famille tu es, ou de quelle tribu.
17 Al the while they did not sin before their God, prosperity was theirs, for they have a God who hateswickedness.	17 L'ange Raphaël lui dit : Cherchez-vous la famille (race) du mercenaire qui doit conduire votre fils, ou le mercenaire lui-même ?
18 But when they turned from the path he had marked out for them some were exterminated in a series ofbattles, others were taken captive to a foreign land. The Temple of their God was rased to the ground and theirtowns were seized by their enemies.	18 Mais, de peur que je ne vous donne de l'inquiétude, je suis Azarias, fils du grand Ananias.
19 Then having turned once again to their God, they came back from the places to which they had beendispersed and scattered, regained possession of Jerusalem, where they have their Temple, and reoccupied thehil -country which had been left deserted.	19 Et Tobie répondit : Tu es d'une race illustre. Mais je te prie de ne pas te fâcher, si j'ai désiré connaître ta race.
20 So, now, master and lord, if this people has committed any fault, if they have sinned against their God,let us first be sure that they real y have this reason to fail, then advance and attack them.	20 L'ange lui dit : (Oui) Je conduirai votre fils en bonne santé, et le ramènerai de même.
21 But if their nation is guiltless, my lord would do better to abstain, for fear that their Lord and God shouldprotect them. We should then become the laughing-stock of the whole world.'	21 Tobie lui répondit : Faites bon voyage ; que Dieu soit dans votre chemin, et que son ange vous accompagne.
22 When Achior had ended this speech, all the people crowding round the tent began protesting.Holofernes' own senior officers, as wel as al the coastal peoples and the Moabites, threatened to tear him limbfrom limb.	22 Alors, ayant préparé tout ce qu'ils devaient porter dans le voyage, Tobie dit adieu à son père et à sa mère, et ils se mirent en chemin tous deux ensemble.
23 'Why should we be afraid of the Israelites? They are a weak and powerless people, quite unable tostand a stiff attack.	23 Et lorsqu'ils furent partis, sa mère commença à pleurer et à dire : Tu nous as ôté le bâton de notre vieillesse, et tu l'as éloigné de nous.
24 Forward! Advance! Your army, Holofernes our master, wil swal ow them in one mouthful!'	24 Plût à Dieu que cet argent, pour lequel tu l'as envoyé, n'eût jamais existé !
	25 Car notre pauvreté nous suffisait, et nous pouvions regarder comme une grande richesse de voir notre fils.
	26 Et Tobie lui dit : Ne pleure pas ; notre fils arrivera sain et sauf, et il reviendra sain et sauf, et tes yeux le verront.
	27 Car je crois que le (qu'un) bon ange de Dieu l'accompagne, et qu'il dispose bien tout ce qui le concerne, et qu'ainsi il reviendra vers nous avec joie.
	28 A cette parole, sa mère cessa de pleurer, et elle se tut.
	29 afin que toutes les nations sachent que Nabuchodonosor est le dieu de la terre, et qu'il n'y en a point d'autre que lui.
