1 Remember, O LORD, what has befallen us, look, and see our disgrace:	1 Ricordati, Signore, di quanto ci è accaduto, guarda e vedi il nostro ludibrio!
2 Our inherited lands have been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners.	2 La nostra eredità è passata a stranieri, le nostre case a sconosciuti.
3 We have become orphans, fatherless; widowed are our mothers.	3 Orfani siamo diventati, senza padre, le nostre madri sono come vedove.
4 The water we drink we must buy, for our own wood we must pay.	4 Beviamo la nostra acqua a prezzo d'argento, acquistiamo a pagamento la nostra legna.
5 On our necks is the yoke of those who drive us; we are worn out, but allowed no rest.	5 Con un giogo sul collo siamo inseguiti: siamo esausti e non ci è dato riposo.
6 To Egypt we submitted, and to Assyria, to fill our need of bread.	6 All'Egitto abbiamo teso la mano, all'Assiria, per saziarci di pane.
7 Our fathers, who sinned, are no more; but we bear their guilt.	7 I nostri padri hanno peccato e non sono più, a noi sono addossate le loro colpe.
8 Slaves rule over us; there is no one to rescue us from their hands.	8 Schiavi signoreggiano su di noi, nessuno può strapparci dalle loro mani.
9 At the peril of our lives we bring in our sustenance, in the face of the desert heat;	9 A rischio della nostra vita ci procuriamo il pane dinanzi alla spada del deserto.
10 Our skin is shriveled up, as though by a furnace, with the searing blasts of famine.	10 La nostra pelle s'è screpolata come un forno per l'ardore della fame.
11 The wives in Zion were ravished by the enemy, the maidens in the cities of Judah;	11 Alle donne hanno fatto oltraggio in Sion, alle vergini nella città di Giuda.
12 Princes were gibbeted by them, elders shown no respect.	12 Hanno impiccato i nobili con le loro mani, non è stato onorato il volto dei vegliardi.
13 The youths carry the millstones, boys stagger under their loads of wood;	13 I giovani sono stati aggiogati alla macina di grano, i ragazzi sono caduti sotto il carico di legna.
14 The old men have abandoned the gate, the young men their music.	14 I vegliardi hanno cessato di adunarsi alla porta, i giovani hanno cessato le loro canzoni.
15 The joy of our hearts has ceased, our dance has turned into mourning;	15 E' finita la gioia del nostro cuore: s'è volta in lutto la nostra danza.
16 The garlands have fallen from our heads: woe to us, for we have sinned!	16 E' caduta la corona dal nostro capo: guai a noi che abbiamo peccato!
17 Over this our hearts are sick, at this our eyes grow dim:	17 Per questo s'è ammalato il nostro cuore, per questo si sono intorbiditi i nostri occhi:
18 That Mount Zion should be desolate, with jackals roaming there!	18 per il monte Sion, che è desolato: lo percorrono le volpi.
19 You, O LORD, are enthroned forever; your throne stands from age to age.	19 Ma tu, Signore, resti per sempre, il tuo trono è di generazione in generazione.
20 Why, then, should you forget us, abandon us so long a time?	20 Perché ci dimenticherai in eterno? Ci abbandonerai per la lunghezza dei giorni?
21 Lead us back to you, O LORD, that we may be restored: give us anew such days as we had of old.	21 Facci ritornare a te, Signore, e noi ritorneremo, rinnova i nostri giorni come in antico!
22 For now you have indeed rejected us, and in full measure turned your wrath against us.	22 Poiché non ci rigetti definitivamente né sei sdegnato oltre misura contro di noi.
