Isaiah 41

1 Keep silence before me, O coastlands; you peoples, wait for my words! Let them draw near and speak; let us come together for judgment.	1 Îles, taisez-vous, écoutez-moi, tous les peuples, venez, approchez-vous! Et puis vous viendrez prendre la parole, car nous avons à plaider ensemble.
2 Who has stirred up from the East the champion of justice, and summoned him to be his attendant? To him he delivers the nations and subdues the kings; With his sword he reduces them to dust, with his bow, to driven straw.	2 Qui a fait venir de l’orient, celui qui a rendez-vous avec la victoire? Qui lui soumet les nations et les rois? Son épée les réduit en poussière son arc, en paille qu’emporte le vent.
3 He pursues them, passing on without loss, by a path his feet do not even tread.	3 Il les poursuit sans risques sur des chemins qu’il ne fait qu’effleurer.
4 Who has performed these deeds? He who has called forth the generations since the beginning. I, the LORD, am the first, and with the last I will also be.	4 Qui a fait cela, qui en est l’auteur? Moi qui, depuis l’origine, fais monter les générations. Moi, Yahvé, je suis le premier, et je serai encore avec les derniers.
5 The coastlands see, and fear; the ends of the earth tremble: these things are near, they come to pass.	5 Les îles l’ont vu et elles se sont effrayées, les extrémités de la terre en ont tremblé.
	6 (Chacun aide son compagnon et lui dit: “Courage!”
	7 L’artisan encourage l’orfèvre, celui qui finit au marteau encourage celui qui tape sur l’enclume. Il dit de la soudure: “Elle est bonne”, et il la renforce avec des clous pour que rien ne bouge.)
8 But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, offspring of Abraham my friend--	8 Mais toi, Israël, mon serviteur, Jacob que j’ai choisi, race d’Abraham mon ami,
9 You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth and summoned from its far-off places, You whom I have called my servant, whom I have chosen and will not cast off--	9 je t’ai saisi aux extrémités de la terre. Je t’ai appelé d’une région lointaine et je t’ai dit: “Tu es mon serviteur que j’ai choisi avant tout autre.”
10 Fear not, I am with you; be not dismayed; I am your God. I will strengthen you, and help you, and uphold you with my right hand of justice.	10 Ne crains rien car je suis avec toi, n’aie pas peur car je suis ton Dieu. Je t’ai donné la force, et puis je t’ai aidé, et je t’ai soutenu de ma main victorieuse.
11 Yes, all shall be put to shame and disgrace who vent their anger against you; Those shall perish and come to nought who offer resistance.	11 Ceux qui crient après toi s’en iront déçus, confus; tes adversaires seront réduits à rien et périront.
12 You shall seek out, but shall not find, those who strive against you; They shall be as nothing at all who do battle with you.	12 Tu chercheras les opposants et tu ne les trouveras plus, ceux qui te font la guerre seront réduits à rien, anéantis.
13 For I am the LORD, your God, who grasp your right hand; It is I who say to you, "Fear not, I will help you."	13 Car moi, Yahvé, je suis ton Dieu. Je t’ai saisi par la main droite et je te dis: “Ne crains pas, je suis ton secours.”
14 Fear not, O worm Jacob, O maggot Israel; I will help you, says the LORD; your redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.	14 Ne crains pas, pauvre Jacob, toi Israël, si fragile! C’est moi ton secours - parole de Yahvé. Le Saint d’Israël s’est fait ton rédempteur.
15 I will make of you a threshing sledge, sharp, new, and double-edged, To thresh the mountains and crush them, to make the hills like chaff.	15 Je veux faire de toi une herse, un traîneau tout neuf à doubles dents. Tu écraseras les montagnes, tu les mettras en pièces et tu rendras les collines semblables à la paille.
16 When you winnow them, the wind shall carry them off and the storm shall scatter them. But you shall rejoice in the LORD, and glory in the Holy One of Israel.	16 Tu les vanneras et le vent les emportera, l’ouragan les dispersera, et toi, tu seras tout fier de Yahvé; le Saint d’Israël sera ta gloire.
17 The afflicted and the needy seek water in vain, their tongues are parched with thirst. I, the LORD, will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.	17 Les pauvres cherchent de l’eau, et rien; leur langue est desséchée par la soif. Mais moi, Yahvé, je réponds à leur appel; moi, le Dieu d’Israël, je ne les abandonnerai pas.
18 I will open up rivers on the bare heights, and fountains in the broad valleys; I will turn the desert into a marshland, and the dry ground into springs of water.	18 Je ferai jaillir des torrents sur les montagnes déboisées, des sources au milieu des vallées. Je ferai du désert un étang, et sur la terre aride couleront des fontaines.
19 I will plant in the desert the cedar, acacia, myrtle, and olive; I will set in the wasteland the cypress, together with the plane tree and the pine,	19 Dans le désert je planterai le cèdre, l’acacia, le chêne et l’olivier; dans la steppe je mettrai côte à côte le cyprès, le platane et le buis.
20 That all may see and know, observe and understand, That the hand of the LORD has done this, the Holy One of Israel has created it.	20 Alors on verra et on saura, on réfléchira et comprendra tout à la fois, que c’est la main de Yahvé qui a fait ces choses, c’est le Saint d’Israël qui les a créées.
21 Present your case, says the LORD; bring forward your reasons, says the King of Jacob.	21 Venez défendre votre cause, dit Yahvé, donnez vos arguments, dit le roi de Jacob.
22 Let them come near and foretell to us what it is that shall happen! What are the things of long ago? Tell us, that we may reflect on them And know their outcome; or declare to us the things to come!	22 Qu’ils s’approchent, et qu’ils nous parlent des événements à venir. Vos prédictions passées, quelles étaient-elles? Nous y ferons très attention pour en connaître la suite. Ou bien parlez-nous des événements à venir,
23 Foretell the things that shall come afterward, that we may know that you are gods! Do something, good or evil, that will put us in awe and in fear.	23 annoncez-nous ce qui doit arriver, et nous saurons que vous êtes des dieux. Au moins faites quelque chose, bien ou mal, nous le verrons et nous vous craindrons.
24 Why, you are nothing and your work is nought! To choose you is an abomination.	24 Mais non, vous n’êtes rien, et vos œuvres sont moins que rien: comment peut-on vous choisir?
25 I have stirred up one from the north, and he comes; from the east I summon him by name; He shall trample the rulers down like red earth, as the potter treads the clay.	25 (Dieu dit:) Du nord je l’ai appelé, et il est venu, depuis l’orient il a été appelé par son nom. Il piétine les gouverneurs comme de la boue, comme le potier quand il prépare son argile.
26 Who announced this from the beginning, that we might know; beforehand, that we might say it is true? Not one of you foretold it, not one spoke; no one heard you say,	26 Mais qui l’avait annoncé depuis le début, pour que nous le sachions? Il fallait le dire à l’avance, et nous pourrions dire: C’est exact! Mais nul ne l’a annoncé, nul ne l’a fait savoir; personne n’a entendu vos paroles.
27 "The first news for Zion: they are coming now," or, "For Jerusalem I will pick out a bearer of the glad tidings."	27 Moi le premier j’ai dit à Sion: Les voilà! j’ai dit à Jérusalem: Je t’envoie de bonnes nouvelles!
28 When I look, there is not one, no one of them to give counsel, to make an answer when I question them.	28 J’ai regardé: il n’y avait personne chez eux pour donner un avis, pas un que je puisse interroger pour avoir une réponse.
29 Ah, all of them are nothing, their works are nought, their idols are empty wind!	29 Tous ensemble ne sont rien, leurs œuvres, moins que rien, et leurs statues, du vent et du vide.
