Sirach 32

1 If you are chosen to preside at dinner, be not puffed up, but with the guests be as one of themselves; Take care of them first before you sit down;	1 T'hanno messo a capo? Non te ne insuperbire: stai in mezzo a loro come uno di essi.
2 when you have fulfilled your duty, then take your place, To share in their joy and win praise for your hospitality.	2 Abbine cura e poi mettiti a sedere, e, compito in tutto il tuo ufficio, mettiti a tavola.
3 Being older, you may talk; that is only your right, but temper your wisdom, not to disturb the singing.	3 Così avrai da loro allegrezza, e per decoroso ornamento riceverai la corona, ed otterrai la stima dei convitati.
4 When wine is present, do not pour out discourse, and flaunt not your wisdom at the wrong time.	4 Parla, o anziano; tocca a te.
5 Like a seal of carnelian in a setting of gold is a concert when wine is served.	5 Ma con scelte parole, con sagace dottrina, e non impedir la musica.
6 Like a gold mounting with an emerald seal is string music with delicious wine.	6 Dove non c'è chi ascolti non buttar via le parole, e non fare importuna pompa di tua sapienza.
7 Young man, speak only when necessary, when they have asked you more than once;	7 Gemma di rubino incastonata nell'oro è un concerto di musica in un convito col vino.
8 Be brief, but say much in those few words, be like the wise man, taciturn.	8 Come sigillo di smeraldo in anello d'oro, così l'armonia dei cantori in giocondo e moderato vino.
9 When among your elders be not forward, and with officials be not too insistent.	9 Ascolta in silenzio, e colla tua riservatezza ti concilierai amore.
10 Like the lightning that flashes before a storm is the esteem that shines on modesty.	10 Giovane, parla appena nella tua propria causa;
11 When it is time to leave, tarry not; be off for home! There take your ease,	11 interrogato due volte, la tua risposta abbia il solo necessario.
12 And there enjoy doing as you wish, but without sin or words of pride.	12 In molte cose diportati come se nulla sapessi, e ascolta tacendo e domandando.
13 Above all, give praise to your Creator, who showers his favors upon you.	13 In mezzo ai grandi non presumere di te, e dove son dei vecchi non parlar molto.
14 He who would find God must accept discipline; he who seeks him obtains his request.	14 Avanti la grandine viene il lampo, e la grazia è preceduta dalla modestia, e per la tua riservatezza tu sarai ben veduto.
15 He who studies the law masters it, but the hypocrite finds it a trap.	15 Venuta l'ora di alzarsi, non ti ninnolare, ma sii il primo ad andare a casa tua, e li divertiti e li gioca,
16 His judgment is sound who fears the LORD; out of obscurity he draws forth a clear plan.	16 e fai quel che ti viene in mento; ma senza peccare, senza parlar con superbia.
17 The sinner turns aside reproof and distorts the law to suit his purpose.	17 E in tutte queste cose benedici il Signore, che ti ha fatto e t'inebria con tutti i suoi beni.
18 The thoughtful man will not neglect direction; the proud and insolent man is deterred by nothing.	18 Chi teme il Signore ne abbraccerà gl'insegnamenti, e chi avrà vegliato per cercarlo troverà la be nedizione.
19 Do nothing without counsel, and then you need have no regrets.	19 Chi cerca la legge ne sarà saziato, e chi agisce con finzione troverà in essa pietra di inciampo.
20 Go not on a way that is set with snares, and let not the same thing trip you twice.	20 Chi teme il Signore troverà il modo di giudicare rettamente, e farà brillare come fiaccola la giustizia.
21 Be not too sure even of smooth roads,	21 L'uomo peccatore fuggirà la correzione e troverà delle scuse per fare a suo capriccio.
22 be careful on all your paths.	22 L'uomo prudente non trascura di riflettere, lo sventato e il superbo non ammette timori,
23 Whatever you do, be on your guard, for in this way you will keep the commandments.	23 anche dopo aver fatto di sua testa e senza consiglio; ma sarà condannato dalle sue opere.
24 He who keeps the law preserves himself; and he who trusts in the LORD shall not be put to shame.	24 Figliolo, non far niente senza consiglio, e non avrai da pentirtene quando l'avrai fatto.
	25 Non camminare per vie rovinose, e non inciamperai nei sassi. Non ti impegnare in via faticosa, per non esporre alla caduta l'anima tua.
	26 Guardati anche dai tuoi figlioli, e stai attento alla gente di casa tua.
	27 In ogni tua azione affidati alla fede dell'anima tua, chè in questo sta l'osservanza dei comandamenti.
	28 Chi crede in Dio sta attento ai suoi comandamenti, e chi confida in lui non resterà deluso.
