NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
"For burning incense you shall make an altar of acacia wood,1 'You will make an altar on which to burn incense; you wil make it of acacia wood,
with a square surface, a cubit long, a cubit wide, and two cubits high, with horns that spring directly from it.2 one cubit long, and one cubit wide -- it must be square -- and two cubits high; its horns must be of apiece with it.
Its grate on top, its walls on all four sides, and its horns you shall plate with pure gold. Put a gold molding around it.3 You will overlay its top, its sides all round and its horns with pure gold and make a gold moulding to goal round.
Underneath the molding you shall put gold rings, two on one side and two on the opposite side, as holders for the poles used in carrying it.4 You will make two gold rings for it below the moulding on its two opposite sides, to take the shaftsused for carrying it.
Make the poles, too, of acacia wood and plate them with gold.5 You will make the shafts of acacia wood and overlay them with gold.
This altar you are to place in front of the veil that hangs before the ark of the commandments where I will meet you.6 'You will put it in front of the curtain by the ark of Testimony, in front of the mercy-seat which is on theTestimony, where I shal meet you.
"On it Aaron shall burn fragrant incense. Morning after morning, when he prepares the lamps,7 On it Aaron wil burn fragrant incense each morning; when he trims the lamps, he will burn incense onit;
and again in the evening twilight, when he lights the lamps, he shall burn incense. Throughout your generations this shall be the established incense offering before the LORD.8 and when Aaron puts back the lamps at twilight, he will burn incense on it, incense perpetual y beforeYahweh for all your generations to come.
On this altar you shall not offer up any profane incense, or any holocaust or cereal offering; nor shall you pour out a libation upon it.9 You will not offer unauthorised incense, or burnt offering, or cereal offering on it, and you will not pourany libation over it.
Once a year Aaron shall perform the atonement rite on its horns. Throughout your generations this atonement is to be made once a year with the blood of the atoning sin offering. This altar is most sacred to the LORD."10 Once a year, Aaron wil perform the rite of expiation on the horns of the altar; once a year, on the Dayof Expiation, with the blood of the sacrifice for sin, he wil make expiation for himself, for al your generations tocome. It is especial y holy for Yahweh.'
The LORD also said to Moses,11 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,
"When you take a census of the Israelites who are to be registered, each one, as he is enrolled, shall give the LORD a forfeit for his life, so that no plague may come upon them for being registered.12 'When you count the Israelites by census, each one of them must pay Yahweh a ransom for his life,to avoid any incidence of plague among them while you are holding the census.
Everyone who enters the registered group must pay a half-shekel, according to the standard of the sanctuary shekel, twenty gerahs to the shekel. This payment of a half-shekel is a contribution to the LORD.13 Everyone subject to the census wil pay half a shekel, reckoning by the sanctuary shekel: twentygerah to the shekel. This half-shekel will be set aside for Yahweh.
Everyone of twenty years or more who enters the registered group must give this contribution to the LORD.14 Everyone subject to the census, that is to say of twenty years and over, will pay the sum set aside forYahweh.
The rich need not give more, nor shall the poor give less, than a half-shekel in this contribution to the LORD to pay the forfeit for their lives.15 The rich man must not give more, nor the poor man less, than half a shekel when he pays the sumset aside for Yahweh in ransom for your lives.
When you receive this forfeit money from the Israelites, you shall donate it to the service of the meeting tent, that there it may be the Israelites' reminder before the LORD, of the forfeit paid for their lives."16 You wil take the ransom money of the Israelites and apply it to the service of the Tent of Meeting, forit to be a reminder of the Israelites before Yahweh, as the ransom for your lives.'
The LORD said to Moses,17 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,
"For ablutions you shall make a bronze laver with a bronze base. Place it between the meeting tent and the altar, and put water in it.18 'You wil also make a bronze basin on its bronze stand, for washing. You wil put it between the Tentof Meeting and the altar and put water in it,
Aaron and his sons shall use it in washing their hands and feet.19 in which Aaron and his sons wil wash their hands and feet.
When they are about to enter the meeting tent, they must wash with water, lest they die. Likewise when they approach the altar in their ministry, to offer an oblation to the LORD,20 Whenever they are to enter the Tent of Meeting, they wil wash, to avoid incurring death; andwhenever they approach the altar for their service, to burn an offering for Yahweh,
they must wash their hands and feet, lest they die. This shall be a perpetual ordinance for him and his descendants throughout their generations."21 they wil wash their hands and feet, to avoid incurring death. This is a perpetual decree for him andhis descendants for all their generations to come.'
The LORD said to Moses,22 Yahweh spoke further to Moses and said,
"Take the finest spices: five hundred shekels of free-flowing myrrh; half that amount, that is, two hundred and fifty shekels, of fragrant cinnamon; two hundred and fifty shekels of fragrant cane;23 'Take the finest spices: five hundred shekels of fresh myrrh, half as much (two hundred and fiftyshekels) of fragrant cinnamon, two hundred and fifty shekels of scented reed,
five hundred shekels of cassia-all according to the standard of the sanctuary shekel; together with a hin of olive oil;24 five hundred shekels (reckoning by the sanctuary shekel) of cassia, and one hin of olive oil.
and blend them into sacred anointing oil, perfumed ointment expertly prepared.25 You wil make this into a holy anointing oil, such a blend as the perfumer might make; this wil be aholy anointing oil.
With this sacred anointing oil you shall anoint the meeting tent and the ark of the commandments,26 With it you wil anoint the Tent of Meeting and the ark of the Testimony,
the table and all its appurtenances, the lampstand and its appurtenances, the altar of incense27 the table and al its accessories, the lamp-stand and its accessories, the altar of incense,
and the altar of holocausts with all its appurtenances, and the laver with its base.28 the altar of burnt offerings and al its accessories, and the basin with its stand,
When you have consecrated them, they shall be most sacred; whatever touches them shall be sacred.29 consecrating them, so that they wil be especial y holy and whatever touches them wil become holy.
Aaron and his sons you shall also anoint and consecrate as my priests.30 You wil also anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them to be priests in my service.
To the Israelites you shall say: As sacred anointing oil this shall belong to me throughout your generations.31 You wil then speak to the Israelites and say, "This anointing oil wil be holy for you for al yourgenerations to come.
It may not be used in any ordinary anointing of the body, nor may you make any other oil of a like mixture. It is sacred, and shall be treated as sacred by you.32 It must not be used for anointing the human body, nor may you make any of the same mixture. It is aholy thing; you wil regard it as holy.
Whoever prepares a perfume like this, or whoever puts any of this on a layman, shall be cut off from his kinsmen."33 Anyone who makes up the same oil or uses it on an unauthorised person wil be outlawed from hispeople." '
The LORD told Moses, "Take these aromatic substances: storax and onycha and galbanum, these and pure frankincense in equal parts;34 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Take sweet spices: storax, onycha, galbanum, sweet spices and purefrankincense in equal parts,
and blend them into incense. This fragrant powder, expertly prepared, is to be salted and so kept pure and sacred.35 and compound an incense, such a blend as the perfumer might make, salted, pure, and holy.
Grind some of it into fine dust and put this before the commandments in the meeting tent where I will meet you. This incense shall be treated as most sacred by you.36 You wil grind some of this up very fine and put it in front of the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting, where I shal meet you. You wil regard it as especial y holy.
You may not make incense of a like mixture for yourselves; you must treat it as sacred to the LORD.37 You may not make any incense of similar composition for your own use. You wil regard it as holy, reserved for Yahweh Anyone who makes up the same thing to use as perfume will be outlawed from his people.'
Whoever makes an incense like this for his own enjoyment of its fragrance, shall be cut off from his kinsmen."
