1 It was the twelfth year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyriansin the great city of Nineveh. At that time Arphaxad ruled over the Medes in Ecbatana.	1 Nell’anno decimosecondo del regno di Nabucodonosor, re degli Assiri, nella grande città di Ninive Arfachshad che regnava sui Medi a Ecbatana,
2 Around this city he built a wall of blocks of stone, each three cubits inheight and six in length. He made the wall seventy cubits high and fifty thick.	2 edificò intorno a Ecbatana mura di pietre tagliate e squadrate della larghezza di tre cubiti e della lunghezza di sei, elevando le mura a settanta cubiti di altezza e facendole lunghe cinquanta.
3 At the gates he raised towers of a hundred cubits, with a thickness of sixty cubits at the base.	3 Presso le porte della città eresse torri di cento cubiti di altezza con fondamenta della larghezza di sessanta cubiti.
4 The gateway he built to a height of seventy cubits, with an opening forty cubits wide for the passage of his chariot forces and the marshaling of his infantry.	4 Le porte, che aveva costruito, si elevavano all’altezza di settanta cubiti e si estendevano per la lunghezza di quaranta affinché permettessero l’uscita del suo potente esercito e la sfilata della sua fanteria.
5 Then King Nebuchadnezzar waged war against King Arphaxad in the vast plain, in the district of Ragae.	5 In quei tempi il re Nabucodonosor fece guerra al re Arfachshad, nella grande pianura: la pianura che si estende nel territorio di Ragau.
6 To him there rallied all the inhabitants of the mountain region, all who dwelt along the Euphrates, the Tigris, and the Hydaspes, and King Arioch of the Elamites, in the plain. Thus many nations came together to resist the people of Cheleoud.	6 Con lui si schierarono tutti coloro che abitavano la regione montuosa, tutti coloro che risiedevano presso le sponde dell’Eufrate, del Tigri e dell’Idaspe e gli abitanti delle pianure di Arioch, re degli Elimei; quindi numerose popolazioni andarono a schierarsi nelle file del popolo di Cheleud.
7 Now Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyrians, sent messengers to all the inhabitants of Persia, and to all those who dwelt in the West: to the inhabitants of Cilicia and Damascus, Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon, to all who dwelt along the seacoast,	7 Nabucodonosor, re degli Assiri, mandò a dire a tutti gli abitanti della Persia da una parte, dall’altra a tutti coloro che abitavano in occidente, in Cilicia, a Damasco, nel Libano e nell’Antilibano e a tutti coloro che abitavano lungo la costa marittima,
8 to the peoples of Carmel, Gilead, Upper Galilee, and the vast plain of Esdraelon,	8 alle popolazioni del Carmelo, di Galaad, agli abitanti della Galilea Superiore e della vasta pianura di Esdrelon,
9 to all those in Samaria and its cities, and west of the Jordan as far as Jerusalem, Bethany, Chelous, Kadesh, and the River of Egypt; to Tahpanhes, Raamses, all the land of Goshen,	9 a tutti coloro che dimoravano nella Samaria e nelle città di questa regione, nella Transgiordania fino a Gerusalemme, a Batane, Chelus, Kadesh e al fiume d’Egitto, a Tafne, a Ramses e a tutto il territorio di Gessen
10 Tanis, Memphis and beyond, and to all the inhabitants of Egypt as far as the borders of Ethiopia.	10 fino oltre Tanis e Memfi, a tutti infine gli abitanti dell’Egitto fino ai termini dell’Etiopia.
11 But the inhabitants of all that land disregarded the summons of Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyrians, and would not go with him to the war. They were not afraid of him but regarded him as a lone individual opposed to them, and turned away his envoys empty-handed, in disgrace.	11 Ma gli abitanti di ognuna di queste regioni si fecero beffe degli ordini di Nabucodonosor, re degli Assiri, e non si raccolsero intorno a lui per la guerra. Non avevano paura di lui: innanzi a loro non era che un uomo qualunque. Rinviarono quindi a mani vuote i suoi messaggeri, disprezzando le loro persone.
12 Then Nebuchadnezzar fell into a violent rage against all that land, and swore by his throne and his kingdom that he would avenge himself on all the territories of Cilicia and Damascus and Syria, and also destroy with his sword all the inhabitants of Moab, Ammon, the whole of Judea, and those living anywhere in Egypt as far as the borders of the two seas.	12 Allora Nabucodonosor si inferocì terribilmente contro tutti questi territori e giurò per il trono e per il suo regno di vendicarsi facendo sterminio, con la spada, di tutte le regioni della Cilicia, di Damasco, della Siria, di tutti gli abitanti del territorio di Moab, delle stirpi di Ammon, di tutta la Giudea e di tutti gli abitanti dell’Egitto fino ai limiti dei due mari.
13 In the seventeenth year he proceeded with his army against King Arphaxad, and was victorious in his campaign. He routed the whole force of Arphaxad, his entire cavalry and all his chariots,	13 Nell’anno decimosettino si schierò con l’esercito contro il re Arfachshad e, dopo averlo superato in combattimento, ne sbaragliò tutto l’esercito, la cavalleria e i carri;
14 and took possession of his cities. He pressed on to Ecbatana and took its towers, sacked its marketplaces, and turned its glory into shame.	14 si impadronì delle sue città, arrivò fino a Ecbatana, smantellò le sue torri, depredò i suoi empori, ridusse la sua magnificenza in ludibrio;
15 Arphaxad himself he overtook in the mountains of Ragae, ran him through with spears, and utterly destroyed him.	15 fece prigioniero Arfachshad sui monti di Ragau, lo fece trapassare dalle sue lance e, in quel giorno, lo finì.
16 Then he returned home with all his numerous, motley horde of warriors; and there he and his army relaxed and feasted for a hundred and twenty days.	16 Tornò indietro con le truppe e tutto un esercito misto: una moltitudine stragrande di guerrieri. Allora lui e il suo esercito si diedero alla pazza gioia e a banchettare per centoventi giorni.
