1 Abram's wife Sarai had borne him no children. She had, however, an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar.	1 Or Saraï, femme d'Abram, ne lui avait point encore donné d'enfants; mais, ayant une servante égyptienne nommée Agar,
2 Sarai said to Abram: "The LORD has kept me from bearing children. Have intercourse, then, with my maid; perhaps I shall have sons through her." Abram heeded Sarai's request.	2 Elle dit a son mari: Vous savez que le Seigneur m'a mise hors d'état d'avoir des enfants; prenez donc ma servante, afin que je voie si j'aurai au moins des enfants par elle. Et Abram s'étant rendu à sa prière,
3 Thus, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, his wife Sarai took her maid, Hagar the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his concubine.	3 Saraï prit sa servante Agar, qui était Egyptienne, et la donna pour femme à son mari, dix ans après qu'ils eurent commencé à demeurer au pays de Chanaan.
4 He had intercourse with her, and she became pregnant. When she became aware of her pregnancy, she looked on her mistress with disdain.	4 Abram en usa selon le désir de Saraï. Mais Agar, voyant qu'elle avait conçu, commença à mépriser sa maîtresse.
5 So Sarai said to Abram: "You are responsible for this outrage against me. I myself gave my maid to your embrace; but ever since she became aware of her pregnancy, she has been looking on me with disdain. May the LORD decide between you and me!"	5 Alors Saraï dit à Abram: Vous agissez avec moi injustement. Je vous ai donné ma servante pour être votre femme; et voyant qu'elle est devenue grosse, elle me méprise. Que le Seigneur soit juge entre vous et moi.
6 Abram told Sarai: "Your maid is in your power. Do to her whatever you please." Sarai then abused her so much that Hagar ran away from her.	6 Abram lui répondit: Votre servante est entre vos mains; usez-en avec elle comme il vous plaira. Saraï l'ayant donc châtiée, Agar s'enfuit.
7 The LORD'S messenger found her by a spring in the wilderness, the spring on the road to Shur,	7 Et l'Ange du Seigneur, la trouvant dans le désert auprès de la fontaine qui est le long du chemin de Sur, dans la solitude,
8 and he asked, "Hagar, maid of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She answered, "I am running away from my mistress, Sarai."	8 Lui dit: Agar, servante de Saraï, d'où venez-vous? et où allez-vous? Elle répondit: Je fuis devant Saraï ma maîtresse.
9 But the LORD'S messenger told her: "Go back to your mistress and submit to her abusive treatment.	9 L'Ange du Seigneur lui repartit: Retournez à votre maîtresse, et humiliez-vous sous sa main.
10 I will make your descendants so numerous," added the LORD'S messenger, "that they will be too many to count.	10 Et Il ajouta: Je multiplierai votre postérité, de telle sorte qu'elle sera innombrable.
11 Besides," the LORD'S messenger said to her: "You are now pregnant and shall bear a son; you shall name him Ishmael, For the LORD has heard you, God has answered you.	11 Et continuant, Il lui dit: Vous avez conçu; vous enfanterez un fils, et vous l'appellerez Ismaël; parce que le Seigneur a entendu le cri de votre affliction.
12 He shall be a wild ass of a man, his hand against everyone, and everyone's hand against him; In opposition to all his kin shall he encamp."	12 Ce sera un homme fier et sauvage; il lèvera la main contre tous, et tous lèveront la main contre lui; et il dressera ses pavillons vis-à-vis de tous ses frères.
13 To the LORD who spoke to her she gave a name, saying, "You are the God of Vision"; she meant, "Have I really seen God and remained alive after my vision?"	13 Alors Agar invoqua le nom du Seigneur qui lui parlait, et elle dit: Vous êtes le Dieu qui m'avez vue. Car il est certain, ajouta-t-elle, que j'ai vu ici par derrière Celui qui me voit.
14 That is why the well is called Beer-lahai-roi. It is between Kadesh and Bered.	14 C'est pourquoi elle appela ce puits: Le puits de Celui qui est vivant et qui me voit. C'est le puits qui est entre Cadès et Barad.
15 Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram named the son whom Hagar bore him Ishmael.	15 Agar enfanta ensuite un fils à Abram, qui le nomma Ismaël.
16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.	16 Abram avait quatre-vingt-six ans lorsqu'Agar lui enfanta Ismaël.
