| 1 Val più in sapienza, che la robustezza, e l'uomo prudente val più, che il valoroso. | 1 Listen therefore, O kings, and understand; learn, O judges of the ends of the earth. |
| 2 Udite pertanto voi, o re, e ponete mente: imparate voi, che giudicate tutta la terra. | 2 Give ear, you that rule over multitudes, and boast of many nations. |
| 3 Porgete le orecchie voi, che avete il governo de' popoli, e vi gloriate di aver soggette le molte nazioni: | 3 For your dominion was given you from the Lord, and your sovereignty from the Most High, who will search out your works and inquire into your plans. |
| 4 La potestà è stata data a voi dal Signore, e la dominazione dall'Altissimo; il quale disaminerà le opere vostre, e sarà scrutator de' pensieri. | 4 Because as servants of his kingdom you did not rule rightly, nor keep the law, nor walk according to the purpose of God, |
| 5 Perchè essendo voi ministri del suo Regno non avete giudicato con rettitudine, e non avete osservata la legge di giustizia, e non avete camminato secondo la volontà di Dio. | 5 he will come upon you terribly and swiftly, because severe judgment falls on those in high places. |
| 6 Con orrore vi avvedrete ben presto, come giudizio rigorosissimo si farà di quei, che sovrastano. | 6 For the lowliest man may be pardoned in mercy, but mighty men will be mightily tested. |
| 7 Imperocché co' piccoli si userà compassione; ma i grandi soffriranno grandi tormenti. | 7 For the Lord of all will not stand in awe of any one, nor show deference to greatness; because he himself made both small and great, and he takes thought for all alike. |
| 8 Perocché non darà esenzione a chicchessia Iddio dominatore di tutti gli uomini, e non avrà riguardo alla grandezza di alcuno; perché egli è, che fece il piccolo, e il grande, ed egli ha egual cura di tutti. | 8 But a strict inquiry is in store for the mighty. |
| 9 Ma ai maggiori maggior supplizio sovrasta. | 9 To you then, O monarchs, my words are directed, that you may learn wisdom and not transgress. |
| 10 A voi dunque, o regi, sono in diritte le mie parole, affinchè appariate saggezza, e non venghiate a cadere. | 10 For they will be made holy who observe holy things in holiness, and those who have been taught them will find a defense. |
| 11 Imperocché quelli, che avran fatte giustamente le opere giuste, saranno giustiticati; e quelli, che avranno apprese queste cose, troveranno come difendersi. | 11 Therefore set your desire on my words; long for them, and you will be instructed. |
| 12 Bramate pertanto li miei insegnamenti; teneteli cari, e sarete istruiti. | 12 Wisdom is radiant and unfading, and she is easily discerned by those who love her, and is found by those who seek her. |
| 13 Luminosa, ed immarcessibile ell'è la saggezza, ed è facilmente veduta da quei, che l'amano, ed è trovata da quei, che la cercano. | 13 She hastens to make herself known to those who desire her. |
| 14 Ella previene color, che la bramano, ed ella la prima ad essi si fa vedere. | 14 He who rises early to seek her will have no difficulty, for he will find her sitting at his gates. |
| 15 Chi di gran mattino anderà in cerca di lei, non avrà da stancarsi; perocché la troverà assisa alla sua porta. | 15 To fix one's thought on her is perfect understanding, and he who is vigilant on her account will soon be free from care, |
| 16 L'averla poi presente al pensiero è perfetta prudenza, e chi per amor di lei veglierà, ben presto sarà tranquillo; | 16 because she goes about seeking those worthy of her, and she graciously appears to them in their paths, and meets them in every thought. |
| 17 Perocché ella va attorno cercando chi è degno di lei, e pelle strade ad essi dolcemente si mostra, e con ogni sollecitudine va incontro ad essi. | 17 The beginning of wisdom is the most sincere desire for instruction, and concern for instruction is love of her, |
| 18 Perocché il principio di lei egli è un sincerissimo amore della disciplina. | 18 and love of her is the keeping of her laws, and giving heed to her laws is assurance of immortality, |
| 19 La brama adunque della disciplina è dilezione; e la dilezione è la osservanza delle sue leggi: è l'osservanza delle sue leggi è la purezza perfetta: | 19 and immortality brings one near to God; |
| 20 E la purezza fa, che uno a Dio si avvicina. | 20 so the desire for wisdom leads to a kingdom. |
| 21 Cosi l'amore della sapienza al regno eterno conduce. | 21 Therefore if you delight in thrones and scepters, O monarchs over the peoples, honor wisdom, that you may reign for ever. |
| 22 Se adunque vi compiacete de' troni, e degli scettri, o regi delle nazioni, amate la sapienza, affin di regnare per sempre. | 22 I will tell you what wisdom is and how she came to be, and I will hide no secrets from you, but I will trace her course from the beginning of creation, and make knowledge of her clear, and I will not pass by the truth; |
| 23 Aiuute la luce della sapienza tutti voi, che siete al governo de' popoli: | 23 neither will I travel in the company of sickly envy, for envy does not associate with wisdom. |
| 24 Or io vi dirò quel, che sia la sapienza, e come ella sia nata, e a voi non celerò i misterj di Dio; ma anderò investigando la sua prima origine, e di lei darò chiara notizia senza occultare la verità: | 24 A multitude of wise men is the salvation of the world, and a sensible king is the stability of his people. |
| 25 Nè io mi farò compagno di chi si strugge, d'invidia, perché un tal uomo non sarà a parte della sapienza. | 25 Therefore be instructed by my words, and you will profit. |
| 26 Or la moltitudine de' sapienti salute del mondo, e il saggio re è fermo sostegno del popolo. | |
| 27 Apparate adunque dalle mie parole la disciplina, ed ella sarà utile a voi. | |
