Job 23

1 Then Job answered and said,	1 Or (Mais) Job répondit en ces termes :
2 Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.	2 Maintenant encore ma parole est pleine d'amertume, et la violence de ma plaie est bien au-dessus de (s'est bien plus aggravée que) mes gémissements.
3 Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!	3 Qui me donnera de le connaître (Dieu) et de le trouver, et de parvenir jusqu'à son trône ?
4 I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.	4 J'exposerais ma cause devant lui, et je remplirais ma bouche de preuves (récriminations),
5 I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.	5 pour savoir ce qu'il me répondrait, et pour entendre ce qu'il pourrait me dire.
6 Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.	6 Je ne voudrais (veux) pas qu'il me combattît de toute sa force (lutte contre moi), ni qu'il m'accablât (accable) par le poids de sa grandeur.
7 There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.	7 Qu'il propose contre moi l'équité, et ma cause obtiendra la victoire.
8 Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:	8 Mais si je vais à l'orient, il ne paraît pas ; si je vais à l'occident, je ne l'aperçois pas.
9 On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:	9 Si je me tourne à gauche, que faire ? je ne puis l'atteindre ; si je vais à droite, je ne le verrai pas.
10 But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.	10 Mais il connaît lui-même ma voie, et il m'éprouve comme l'or qui passe par le feu.
11 My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.	11 Mon pied a suivi ses traces ; j'ai gardé sa voie, et je ne m'en suis pas détourné.
12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.	12 Je ne me suis pas écarté des commandements de ses lèvres, et j'ai caché dans mon sein les paroles de sa bouche.
13 But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.	13 Car il subsiste lui seul (est Tout-puissant). Nul ne peut empêcher ses desseins, et il fait absolument tout ce qui lui plaît (son âme a voulu, elle l'a fait).
14 For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.	14 Quand il aura accompli sur moi sa volonté, il lui reste encore beaucoup d'autres moyens semblables.
15 Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.	15 C'est pourquoi je me trouble en sa présence, et lorsque je le considère, je suis agité de crainte.
16 For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me:	16 Dieu a amolli mon cœur, et le Tout-Puissant m'a épouvanté.
17 Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.	17 Car je ne péris pas à cause des ténèbres qui m'environnent, et ce n'est pas l'obscurité qui a voilé ma face.
