JERUSALEM	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Les gens d'Israël avaient prononcé ce serment à Miçpa: "Personne d'entre nous ne donnera sa fille enmariage à Benjamin."	1 Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah that none of them would give his daughter in marriage to anyone from Benjamin.
2 Le peuple se rendit à Béthel, il resta là assis devant Dieu jusqu'au soir, poussant des gémissements etpleurant à gros sanglots:	2 So the people went to Bethel and remained there before God until evening, raising their voices in bitter lament.
3 "Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël, disaient-ils, pourquoi faut-il qu'en Israël manque aujourd'hui une tribud'Israël?"	3 They said, "LORD, God of Israel, why has it come to pass in Israel that today one tribe of Israel should be lacking?"
4 Le lendemain, le peuple se leva de bon matin et construisit là un autel; il offrit des holocaustes et dessacrifices de communion.	4 Early the next day the people built an altar there and offered holocausts and peace offerings.
5 Puis les Israélites dirent: "Qui d'entre toutes les tribus d'Israël n'est pas venu à l'assemblée auprès deYahvé?" Car en un serment solennel on avait déclaré que quiconque ne monterait pas à Miçpa auprès de Yahvémourrait certainement.	5 Then the Israelites asked, "Are there any among all the tribes of Israel who did not come up to the LORD for the assembly?" For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who did not go up to the LORD at Mizpah should be put to death without fail.
6 Or les Israélites furent pris de pitié pour Benjamin leur frère: "Aujourd'hui, disaient-ils, une tribu aété retranchée d'Israël.	6 The Israelites were disconsolate over their brother Benjamin and said, "Today one of the tribes of Israel has been cut off.
7 Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui restent, puisque nous avons juré par Yahvé dene pas leur donner de nos filles en mariage?"	7 What can we do about wives for the survivors, since we have sworn by the LORD not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?"
8 Ils s'informèrent alors: "Quel est celui d'entre les tribus d'Israël, qui n'est pas monté auprès de Yahvéà Miçpa?" Et il se trouva que personne de Yabesh en Galaad n'était venu au camp, à l'assemblée.	8 And when they asked whether anyone among the tribes of Israel had not come up to the LORD in Mizpah, they found that none of the men of Jabesh-gilead had come to the encampment for the assembly.
9 Le peuple s'était en effet compté et il n'y avait là personne d'entre les habitants de Yabesh en Galaad.	9 A roll call of the army established that none of the inhabitants of that city were present.
10 Alors la communauté y envoya 12.000 hommes d'entre les vaillants avec cet ordre: "Allez, et vouspasserez au fil de l'épée les habitants de Yabesh en Galaad, ainsi que les femmes et les enfants.	10 The community, therefore, sent twelve thousand warriors with orders to go to Jabesh-gilead and put those who lived there to the sword, including the women and children.
11 Voici ce que vous ferez: vous vouerez à l'anathème tous les mâles et toutes les femmes qui ontconnu la couche d'un homme, mais vous laisserez la vie aux vierges." Et c'est ce qu'ils firent.	11 They were told to include under the ban all males and every woman who was not still a virgin.
12 Parmi les habitants de Yabesh de Galaad ils trouvèrent 400 jeunes filles vierges, qui n'avaient paspartagé la couche d'un homme, et ils les emmenèrent au camp (à Silo qui est au pays de Canaan).	12 Finding among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, who had had no relations with men, they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan.
13 Toute la communauté envoya alors des émissaires aux Benjaminites qui se trouvaient au Rocher deRimmôn pour leur proposer la paix.	13 Then the whole community sent a message to the Benjaminites at the rock Rimmon, offering them peace.
14 Benjamin revint alors. On leur donna parmi les femmes de Yabesh en Galaad celles qu'on avaitlaissé vivre, mais il n'y en eut pas assez pour tous.	14 When Benjamin returned at that time, they gave them as wives the women of Jabesh-gilead whom they had spared; but these proved to be not enough for them.
15 Le peuple fut pris de pitié pour Benjamin, parce que Yahvé avait fait une brèche parmi les tribusd'Israël.	15 The people were still disconsolate over Benjamin because the LORD had made a breach among the tribes of Israel.
16 "Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui restent, disaient les anciens de lacommunauté, puisque les femmes de Benjamin ont été exterminées?"	16 And the elders of the community said, "What shall we do for wives for the survivors? For every woman in Benjamin has been put to death."
17 Ils ajoutaient: "Comment conserver un reste à Benjamin pour qu'une tribu ne soit pas effacéed'Israël?	17 They said, "Those of Benjamin who survive must have heirs, else one of the Israelite tribes will be wiped out.
18 Car, pour nous, nous ne pouvons plus leur donner nos filles en mariage." Les Israélites avaient eneffet prononcé ce serment: "Maudit soit celui qui donnera une femme à Benjamin!"	18 Yet we cannot give them any of our daughters in marriage, because the Israelites have sworn, 'Cursed be he who gives a woman to Benjamin!'"
19 "Mais il y a, dirent-ils, la fête de Yahvé qui se célèbre chaque année à Silo." (La ville se trouve aunord de Béthel, à l'orient de la route qui monte de Béthel à Sichem et au sud de Lebona.)	19 Then they thought of the yearly feast of the LORD at Shiloh, north of Bethel, east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.
20 Ils recommandèrent donc aux Benjaminites: "Allez vous mettre en embuscade dans les vignes.	20 And they instructed the Benjaminites, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards.
21 Vous guetterez et, lorsque les filles de Silo sortiront pour danser en choeurs, vous sortirez desvignes, vous enlèverez pour vous chacun une femme parmi les filles de Silo et vous vous en irez au pays deBenjamin.	21 When you see the girls of Shiloh come out to do their dancing, leave the vineyards and each of you seize one of the girls of Shiloh for a wife, and go to the land of Benjamin.
22 Si leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent nous chercher querelle, nous leur dirons: Accordez-les nous,car nous n'avons pas pu prendre de femme pour chacun dans le combat; et vous ne pouviez pas les leur donner,car alors vous auriez été coupables.	22 When their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we shall say to them, 'Release them to us as a kindness, since we did not take a woman apiece in the war. Had you yourselves given them these wives, you would now be guilty.'"
23 Ainsi firent les Benjaminites, et, parmi les danseuses qu'ils avaient enlevées, ils prirent un nombrede femmes égal au leur, puis ils partirent, revinrent dans leur héritage, rebâtirent les villes et s'y établirent.	23 The Benjaminites did this; they carried off a wife for each of them from their raid on the dancers, and went back to their own territory, where they rebuilt and occupied the cities.
24 Les Israélites se dispersèrent alors pour regagner chacun sa tribu et son clan, et s'en retournèrent delà chacun dans son héritage.	24 Also at that time the Israelites dispersed; each of them left for his own heritage in his own clan and tribe.
25 En ce temps-là il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël et chacun faisait ce qui lui semblait bon.	25 In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what he thought best.
