| 1 Quand ils apprirent cela, tous les rois qui étaient de ce côté du Jourdain, dans la Montagne, dans leBas-Pays et sur toute la côte de la Grande mer vers le Liban, Hittites, Amorites, Cananéens, Perizzites, Hivviteset Jébuséens, | 1 When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan in the hill country and in the lowland all along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, heard of this, |
| 2 se coalisèrent pour combattre d'un commun accord Josué et Israël. | 2 they gathered together with one accord to fight Joshua and Israel. |
| 3 Les habitants de Gabaôn apprirent la manière dont Josué avait traité Jéricho et Aï, | 3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, |
| 4 et eurent, eux aussi, recours à la ruse. Ils allèrent se munir de provisions, et chargèrent leurs ânes devieux sacs et de vieilles outres à vin crevées et recousues. | 4 they on their part acted with cunning, and went and made ready provisions, and took worn-out sacks upon their asses, and wineskins, worn-out and torn and mended, |
| 5 Ils avaient à leurs pieds de vieilles sandales rapiécées, et sur eux de vieux habits. Tout le pain qu'ilsemportaient pour leur nourriture était durci et réduit en miettes. | 5 with worn-out, patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes; and all their provisions were dry and moldy. |
| 6 Ils arrivèrent au camp de Gilgal, auprès de Josué, et lui dirent ainsi qu'aux hommes d'Israël: "Nousvenons d'un pays lointain, faites donc alliance avec nous." | 6 And they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a far country; so now make a covenant with us." |
| 7 Les hommes d'Israël répondirent à ces Hivvites: "Qui sait si vous n'habitez pas au milieu de nous?Alors comment pourrions-nous faire alliance avec vous?" | 7 But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, "Perhaps you live among us; then how can we make a covenant with you?" |
| 8 Ils répondirent à Josué: "Nous sommes tes serviteurs" -- "Mais qui êtes-vous, leur demanda Josué, etd'où venez-vous?" | 8 They said to Joshua, "We are your servants." And Joshua said to them, "Who are you? And where do you come from?" |
| 9 Ils répondirent: "C'est d'un pays très éloigné que viennent tes serviteurs, à cause du renom de Yahvéton Dieu, car nous avons entendu parler de lui, de tout ce qu'il a fait en Egypte | 9 They said to him, "From a very far country your servants have come, because of the name of the LORD your God; for we have heard a report of him, and all that he did in Egypt, |
| 10 et de tout ce qu'il a fait aux deux rois des Amorites qui vivaient au-delà du Jourdain, Sihôn, roi deHeshbôn, et Og, roi du Bashân, qui vivait à Ashtarot. | 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth. |
| 11 Alors nos anciens et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont dit: Prenez avec vous des provisionspour le voyage, allez au-devant d'eux et dites-leur: Nous sommes vos serviteurs, faites donc alliance avec nous! | 11 And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, 'Take provisions in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, "We are your servants; come now, make a covenant with us."' |
| 12 Voici notre pain: il était tout chaud quand nous en avons fait provision dans nos maisons, le jour oùnous sommes partis pour aller chez vous, et maintenant le voilà durci et réduit en miettes. | 12 Here is our bread; it was still warm when we took it from our houses as our food for the journey, on the day we set forth to come to you, but now, behold, it is dry and moldy; |
| 13 Ces outres à vin que nous avions remplies toutes neuves, les voilà crevées. Nos sandales et nosvêtements, les voilà usés par une très longue marche." | 13 these wineskins were new when we filled them, and behold, they are burst; and these garments and shoes of ours are worn out from the very long journey." |
| 14 Les notables acceptèrent de leurs provisions et ne consultèrent pas l'oracle de Yahvé. | 14 So the men partook of their provisions, and did not ask direction from the LORD. |
| 15 Josué leur accorda la paix et fit alliance avec eux pour qu'ils aient la vie sauve, et les notables de lacommunauté leur en firent serment. | 15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the leaders of the congregation swore to them. |
| 16 Or il arriva que, trois jours après qu'ils aient fait alliance, on apprit qu'ils étaient un peuple voisin,vivant au milieu d'Israël. | 16 At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt among them. |
| 17 Les Israélites partirent du camp et arrivèrent dans leurs villes, le troisième jour. Leurs villes étaientGabaôn, Kephira, Béérot et Qiryat-Yéarim. | 17 And the people of Israel set out and reached their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Be-eroth, and Kiriath-jearim. |
| 18 Les Israélites ne les attaquèrent pas, puisque les notables de la communauté leur avaient fait sermentpar Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël, mais toute la communauté murmura contre les notables. | 18 But the people of Israel did not kill them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. Then all the congregation murmured against the leaders. |
| 19 Alors tous les notables dirent à toute l'assemblée: "Nous leur avons fait serment par Yahvé, Dieud'Israël, nous ne pouvons donc plus les toucher. | 19 But all the leaders said to all the congregation, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them. |
| 20 Voici ce que nous leur ferons: Laisse-leur la vie sauve, pour ne pas attirer sur nous la Colère à causedu serment que nous leur avons fait." | 20 This we will do to them, and let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we swore to them." |
| 21 Et les notables leur dirent: "Qu'ils vivent, mais qu'ils soient fendeurs de bois et porteurs d'eau auservice de toute la communauté." Ainsi leur parlèrent les notables. | 21 And the leaders said to them, "Let them live." So they became hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the leaders had said of them. |
| 22 Josué convoqua les Gabaonites et leur dit: "Pourquoi nous avez-vous trompés en disant: Noussommes très éloignés de vous, quand vous habitez au milieu de nous? | 22 Joshua summoned them, and he said to them, "Why did you deceive us, saying, 'We are very far from you,' when you dwell among us? |
| 23 Désormais vous êtes maudits et vous ne cesserez jamais d'être en servitude, comme fendeurs de boiset porteurs d'eau dans la Maison de mon Dieu." | 23 Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you shall always be slaves, hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God." |
| 24 Ils répondirent à Josué: "C'est que l'on avait bien dit à tes serviteurs l'ordre donné par Yahvé tonDieu à Moïse, son serviteur, de vous livrer tout ce pays et d'exterminer devant vous tous ses habitants. Aussiavons-nous été saisis à votre approche d'une grande crainte pour nos vies. Voilà pourquoi nous avons agi ainsi. | 24 They answered Joshua, "Because it was told to your servants for a certainty that the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; so we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and did this thing. |
| 25 Et maintenant, nous voici entre tes mains, ce qu'il te semble bon et juste de nous faire, fais-le." | 25 And now, behold, we are in your hand: do as it seems good and right in your sight to do to us." |
| 26 Il fit ainsi à leur égard; il les délivra de la main des Israélites qui ne les tuèrent pas. | 26 So he did to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the people of Israel; and they did not kill them. |
| 27 En ce jour-là, Josué les mit comme fendeurs de bois et porteurs d'eau au service de la communauté etde l'autel de Yahvé, jusqu'aujourd'hui, au lieu qu'il choisirait. | 27 But Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD, to continue to this day, in the place which he should choose. |
