1 Voici ce que reçurent en héritage les Israélites au pays de Canaan, ce que leur donnèrent en héritagele prêtre Eléazar et Josué, fils de Nûn, avec les chefs de famille des tribus d'Israël.	1 Here follow the portions which the Israelites received in the land of Canaan. Eleazar the priest, Joshua, son of Nun, and the heads of families in the tribes of the Israelites determined
2 C'est par le sort qu'ils reçurent leur héritage, comme Yahvé l'avait ordonné par l'intermédiaire deMoïse pour les neuf tribus et demie.	2 their heritage by lot, in accordance with the instructions the LORD had given through Moses concerning the remaining nine and a half tribes.
3 Car Moïse avait donné leur héritage aux deux tribus et demie de l'autre côté du Jourdain, mais auxLévites, il n'avait pas donné d'héritage parmi elles.	3 For to two and a half tribes Moses had already given a heritage beyond the Jordan; and though the Levites were given no heritage among the tribes,
4 Car les fils de Joseph formaient deux tribus, Manassé et Ephraïm, et l'on ne donna dans le paysaucune part aux Lévites, si ce n'est des villes pour y habiter, avec les pâturages attenants pour leurs bestiaux etleurs biens.	4 the descendants of Joseph formed two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites themselves received no share of the land except cities to live in, with their pasture lands for the cattle and flocks.
5 Les Israélites firent comme Yahvé l'avait ordonné à Moïse, et ils partagèrent le pays.	5 Thus, in apportioning the land, did the Israelites carry out the instructions of the LORD to Moses.
6 Des fils de Juda vinrent trouver Josué à Gilgal, et Caleb, fils de Yephunné, le Qenizzite, lui dit: "Tusais bien ce que Yahvé a dit à Moïse, l'homme de Dieu, à mon sujet et au tien à Cadès-Barné.	6 When the Judahites came up to Joshua in Gilgal, the Kenizzite Caleb, son of Jephunneh, said to him: "You know what the LORD said to the man of God, Moses, about you and me in Kadesh-barnea.
7 J'avais 40 ans lorsque Moïse, serviteur de Yahvé, m'envoya de Cadès-Barné pour espionner ce pays,et je lui fis un rapport sincère.	7 I was forty years old when the servant of the LORD, Moses, sent me from Kadesh-barnea to reconnoiter the land; and I brought back to him a conscientious report.
8 Mais les frères qui étaient montés avec moi découragèrent le peuple, tandis que moi, j'obéissaisparfaitement à Yahvé mon Dieu.	8 My fellow scouts who went up with me discouraged the people, but I was completely loyal to the LORD, my God.
9 Ce jour-là, Moïse fit ce serment: Sois-en sûr, le pays qu'a foulé ton pied t'appartiendra en héritage, àtoi et à tes descendants pour toujours, parce que tu as obéi parfaitement à Yahvé mon Dieu.	9 On that occasion Moses swore this oath, 'The land where you have set foot shall become your heritage and that of your descendants forever, because you have been completely loyal to the LORD, my God.'
10 Depuis lors, Yahvé m'a gardé en vie selon sa promesse. Il y a 45 ans que Yahvé a fait cettedéclaration à Moïse, Israël allait alors par le désert, et voici qu'à présent je compte 85 ans.	10 Now, as he promised, the LORD has preserved me while Israel was journeying through the desert, for the forty-five years since the LORD spoke thus to Moses; and although I am now eighty-five years old,
11 Je suis aussi robuste aujourd'hui que le jour où Moïse me confia cette mission, ma forced'aujourd'hui vaut ma force d'alors pour combattre et pour aller et venir.	11 I am still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me forth, with no less vigor whether for war or for ordinary tasks.
12 Il est temps de me donner cette montagne dont Yahvé m'a parlé ce jour-là. Tu as appris en ce jour-là qu'il y avait là des Anaqim et de grandes villes fortifiées; mais si Yahvé est avec moi, je les déposséderaicomme Yahvé l'a dit."	12 Give me, therefore, this mountain region which the LORD promised me that day, as you yourself heard. True, the Anakim are there, with large fortified cities, but if the LORD is with me I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD promised."
13 Josué bénit Caleb, fils de Yephunné, et lui donna Hébron pour héritage.	13 Joshua blessed Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and gave him Hebron as his heritage.
14 Aussi Hébron est-il resté jusqu'à ce jour l'héritage de Caleb, fils de Yephunné le Qenizzite, parcequ'il avait suivi sans défaillance Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël.	14 Therefore Hebron remains the heritage of the Kenizzite Caleb, son of Jephunneh, to the present day, because he was completely loyal to the LORD, the God of Israel.
15 Autrefois le nom d'Hébron était Qiryat-Arba. Arba était l'homme le plus grand des Anaqim. Et lepays se reposa de la guerre.	15 Hebron was formerly called Kiriath-arba, for Arba, the greatest among the Anakim. And the land enjoyed peace.
