Deutéronome 5

JERUSALEM	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Moïse convoqua tout Israël et leur dit: Ecoute, Israël, les lois et les coutumes que je prononceaujourd'hui à vos oreilles. Apprenez-les et gardez-les pour les mettre en pratique.	1 Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "Hear, O Israel, the statutes and decrees which I proclaim in your hearing this day, that you may learn them and take care to observe them.
2 Yahvé notre Dieu a conclu avec nous une alliance à l'Horeb.	2 The LORD, our God, made a covenant with us at Horeb;
3 Ce n'est pas avec nos pères que Yahvé a conclu cette alliance mais avec nous, nous-mêmesqui sommes ici aujourd'hui tous vivants.	3 not with our fathers did he make this covenant, but with us, all of us who are alive here this day.
4 Sur la montagne, au milieu du feu, Yahvé vous a parlé face à face,	4 The LORD spoke with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire.
5 et moi je me tenais alors entre Yahvé et vous pour vous faire connaître la parole de Yahvé;car, craignant le feu, vous n'étiez pas montés sur la montagne. Il dit:	5 Since you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain, I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to announce to you these words of the LORD:
6 "Je suis Yahvé ton Dieu, qui t'ai fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude.	6 'I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.
7 "Tu n'auras pas d'autres dieux devant moi.	7 You shall not have other gods besides me.
8 "Tu ne te feras aucune image sculptée de rien qui ressemble à ce qui est dans les cieux là-haut,ou sur la terre ici-bas, ou dans les eaux au-dessous de la terre.	8 You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth;
9 Tu ne te prosterneras pas devant ces dieux ni ne les serviras. Car moi, Yahvé, ton Dieu, je suisun Dieu jaloux, qui punis la faute des pères sur les enfants, les petits-enfants et les arrière-petits-enfants, pourceux qui me haïssent,	9 you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishments for their fathers' wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation
10 mais qui fais grâce à des milliers, pour ceux qui m'aiment et gardent mes commandements.	10 but bestowing mercy, down to the thousandth generation, on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments.
11 "Tu ne prononceras pas le nom de Yahvé ton Dieu à faux, car Yahvé ne laisse pas impunicelui qui prononce son nom à faux.	11 'You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished him who takes his name in vain.
12 "Observe le jour du sabbat pour le sanctifier, comme te l'a commandé Yahvé, ton Dieu.	12 'Take care to keep holy the sabbath day as the LORD, your God, commanded you.
13 Pendant six jours tu travailleras et tu feras tout ton ouvrage,	13 Six days you may labor and do all your work;
14 mais le septième jour est un sabbat pour Yahvé ton Dieu. Tu n'y feras aucun ouvrage, toi, niton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ton boeuf, ni ton âne ni aucune de tes bêtes, ni l'étranger quiest dans tes portes. Ainsi, comme toi-même, ton serviteur et ta servante pourront se reposer.	14 but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God. No work may be done then, whether by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or ass or any of your beasts, or the alien who lives with you. Your male and female slave should rest as you do.
15 Tu te souviendras que tu as été en servitude au pays d'Egypte et que Yahvé ton Dieu t'en afait sortir d'une main forte et d'un bras étendu; c'est pourquoi Yahvé ton Dieu t'a commandé de garder le jour dusabbat.	15 For remember that you too were once slaves in Egypt, and the LORD, your God, brought you from there with his strong hand and outstretched arm. That is why the LORD, your God, has commanded you to observe the sabbath day.
16 "Honore ton père et ta mère, comme te l'a commandé Yahvé ton Dieu, afin que se prolongenttes jours et que tu sois heureux sur la terre que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne.	16 'Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD, your God, has commanded you, that you may have a long life and prosperity in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you.
17 "Tu ne tueras pas.	17 'You shall not kill.
18 "Tu ne commettras pas l'adultère.	18 'You shall not commit adultery.
19 "Tu ne voleras pas.	19 'You shall not steal.
20 "Tu ne porteras pas de faux témoignage contre ton prochain.	20 'You shall not bear dishonest witness against your neighbor.
21 "Tu ne convoiteras pas la femme de ton prochain, tu ne désireras ni sa maison, ni son champ,ni son serviteur ou sa servante, ni son boeuf ou son âne: rien de ce qui est à ton prochain."	21 'You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. 'You shall not desire your neighbor's house or field, nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass, nor anything that belongs to him.'
22 Telles sont les paroles que vous adressa Yahvé quand vous étiez tous assemblés sur lamontagne. Il vous parla du milieu du feu, dans la nuée et les ténèbres, d'une voix forte. Il n'y ajouta rien et lesécrivit sur deux tables de pierre qu'il me donna.	22 "These words, and nothing more, the LORD spoke with a loud voice to your entire assembly on the mountain from the midst of the fire and the dense cloud. He wrote them upon two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
23 Or, lorsque vous eûtes entendu cette voix sortir des ténèbres, tandis que la montagne était enfeu, vous tous, chefs de tribus et anciens, vous vîntes à moi	23 But when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, you came to me in the person of all your tribal heads and elders,
24 et vous me dîtes: "Voici que Yahvé notre Dieu nous a montré sa gloire et sa grandeur, et quenous avons entendu sa voix du milieu du feu. Nous avons vu aujourd'hui que Dieu peut parler à l'homme, etl'homme rester en vie.	24 and said, 'The LORD, our God, has indeed let us see his glory and his majesty! We have heard his voice from the midst of the fire and have found out today that a man can still live after God has spoken with him.
25 Et maintenant, pourquoi devrions-nous mourir? Car ce grand feu pourrait nous dévorer sinous continuons à écouter la voix de Yahvé notre Dieu, et nous pourrions mourir.	25 But why should we die now? Surely this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the LORD, our God, any more, we shall die.
26 Est-il en effet un être de chair qui puisse rester en vie, après avoir entendu comme nous lavoix du Dieu vivant parlant du milieu du feu?	26 For what mortal has heard, as we have, the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of fire, and survived?
27 Toi, approche pour entendre tout ce que dira Yahvé notre Dieu, puis tu nous répéteras ce queYahvé notre Dieu t'aura dit; nous l'écouterons et le mettrons en pratique."	27 Go closer, you, and hear all that the LORD, our God, will say, and then tell us what the LORD, our God, tells you; we will listen and obey.'
28 Yahvé entendit ce que vous disiez et il me dit: "J'ai entendu les paroles de ce peuple. Tout cequ'ils t'ont dit est bien.	28 "The LORD heard your words as you were speaking to me and said to me, 'I have heard the words these people have spoken to you, which are all well said.
29 Ah! si leur coeur pouvait toujours être ainsi, pour me craindre et garder mescommandements en sorte qu'ils soient heureux à jamais, eux et leurs fils.	29 Would that they might always be of such a mind, to fear me and to keep all my commandments! Then they and their descendants would prosper forever.
30 Va leur dire: Retournez à vos tentes.	30 Go, tell them to return to their tents.
31 Mais toi, tu te tiendras ici auprès de moi, je te dirai tous les commandements, les lois et lescoutumes que tu leur enseigneras et qu'ils mettront en pratique dans le pays que je leur donne en possession."	31 Then you wait here near me and I will give you all the commandments, the statutes and decrees you must teach them, that they may observe them in the land which I am giving them to possess.'
32 Gardez et mettez en pratique! Ainsi vous l'a ordonné Yahvé votre Dieu. Ne vous écartez ni àdroite ni à gauche.	32 "Be careful, therefore, to do as the LORD, your God, has commanded you, not turning aside to the right or to the left,
33 Vous suivrez tout le chemin que Yahvé votre Dieu vous a tracé, alors vous vivrez, vousaurez bonheur et longue vie dans le pays dont vous allez prendre possession.	33 but following exactly the way prescribed for you by the LORD, your God, that you may live and prosper, and may have long life in the land which you are to occupy.
