Deuxième livre de Samuel 19

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Alors le roi frémit. Il monta dans la chambre supérieure de la porte et se mit à pleurer; il disait ensanglotant: "Mon fils Absalom! mon fils! mon fils Absalom! que ne suis-je mort à ta place! Absalom mon fils!mon fils!"	1 The king shuddered. He went up to the room over the gate and burst into tears; and, as he wept, hekept saying, 'Oh, my son Absalom! My son! My son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you! Oh, Absalom myson, my son!'
2 On prévint Joab: "Voici que le roi pleure et se lamente sur Absalom."	2 Word was brought to Joab, 'The king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.'
3 La victoire, ce jour-là, se changea en deuil pour toute l'armée, car l'armée apprit ce jour-là que leroi était dans l'affliction à cause de son fils.	3 And for the entire army that day, victory was turned to mourning, the troops having learnt that the kingwas grieving for his son.
4 Et ce jour-là, l'armée rentra furtivement dans la ville, comme se dérobe une armée qui s'estcouverte de honte en fuyant durant la bataille.	4 And that day the troops came furtively back into town, like troops creeping shamefacedly away whendeserting in battle.
5 Le roi s'était voilé le visage et poussait de grands cris: "Mon fils Absalom! Absalom mon fils!mon fils!"	5 The king had covered his face and kept crying aloud, 'My son Absalom! Oh, Absalom my son, myson!'
6 Joab se rendit auprès du roi à l'intérieur et dit: "Tu couvres aujourd'hui de honte le visage de toustes serviteurs qui ont sauvé aujourd'hui ta vie, celle de tes fils et de tes filles, celle de tes femmes et celle de tesconcubines,	6 Joab went inside to the king and said, 'Today you have made al your servants feel ashamed-today,when they have saved your life, the lives of your sons and daughters, the lives of your wives and the lives ofyour concubines!-because you love those who hate you and hate those who love you.
7 parce que tu aimes ceux qui te haïssent et que tu hais ceux qui t'aiment. En effet, tu as manifestéaujourd'hui que chefs et soldats n'étaient rien pour toi, car je sais maintenant que, si Absalom vivait et si nousétions tous morts aujourd'hui, tu trouverais cela très bien.	7 Today you have made it plain that commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you -- for today I cansee that you would be content if we were all dead, provided that Absalom was alive!
8 Allons, je t'en prie, sors et rassure tes soldats, car, je le jure par Yahvé, si tu ne sors pas, il n'yaura personne qui passe cette nuit avec toi, et ce sera pour toi un malheur plus grand que tous les malheurs qui tesont advenus depuis ta jeunesse jusqu'à présent."	8 Now get up, come out and reassure your soldiers; for if you do not come out, I swear by Yahweh, notone man wil stay with you tonight; and this will be a worse misfortune for you than anything that has happenedto you from your youth until now!'
9 Le roi se leva et vint s'asseoir à la porte. On l'annonça à toute l'armée: "Voici, dit-on, que le roiest assis à la porte", et toute l'armée se rendit devant le roi. Israël s'était enfui chacun à ses tentes.	9 The king got up and took his seat at the gate. An announcement was made to the whole army: 'Theking is sitting at the gate.' And the whole army assembled in front of the king.
10 Dans toutes les tribus d'Israël, tout le monde se querellait. On disait: "C'est le roi qui nous adélivrés de la main de nos ennemis, c'est lui qui nous a sauvés de la main des Philistins et maintenant il a dûs'enfuir du pays, loin d'Absalom.	10 Israel had fled, dispersing to their homes. Throughout the tribes of Israel al was dissension and people began saying, 'The king, having freed us from the clutches of our enemies, having saved us from theclutches of the Philistines, has himself had to flee the country to escape from Absalom;
11 Quant à Absalom que nous avions oint pour qu'il régnât sur nous, il est mort dans la bataille.Alors pourquoi ne faites-vous rien pour ramener le roi?"	11 and now Absalom, whom we had anointed to reign over us, has died in battle. Why does no onesuggest that the king should be brought back?'What was being said throughout Israel reached the king.
12 Ce qui se disait dans tout Israël arriva jusqu'au roi. Alors le roi David envoya dire aux prêtresSadoq et Ebyatar: "Parlez ainsi aux anciens de Juda: Pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à ramener le roi chez lui?	12 King David then sent word to the priests Zadok and Abiathar, 'Say to the elders of Judah, "Whyshould you be the last to bring the king home?
13 Vous êtes mes frères, vous êtes de ma chair et de mes os, pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers àramener le roi?"	13 You are my brothers, you are my own flesh and bone: why should you be the last to bring the kingback?"
14 Et vous direz à Amasa: N'es-tu pas de mes os et de ma chair? Que Dieu me fasse ce mal et qu'ilajoute cet autre si tu n'es pas pour toujours à mon service comme chef de l'armée à la place de Joab."	14 And say to Amasa, "Are you not my own flesh and bone? May God bring unnameable il s on me andworse il s, too, if you do not become my permanent army commander instead of Joab!" '
15 Il rallia ainsi le coeur de tous les hommes de Juda comme d'un seul homme et ils envoyèrentdire au roi: "Reviens, toi et tous tes serviteurs."	15 Thus he rallied the hearts of the men of Judah to a man and, as a result, they sent word to the king,'Come back, you and al who serve you.'
16 Le roi revint donc et atteignit le Jourdain. Juda était arrivé à Gilgal, venant à la rencontre du roi,pour aider le roi à passer le Jourdain.	16 So the king started home and reached the Jordan. Judah, coming to meet the king to escort himacross the Jordan, had arrived at Gilgal.
17 En hâte, Shiméï, fils de Géra, le Benjaminite de Bahurim, descendit avec les gens de Juda au-devant du roi David.	17 Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite of Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet KingDavid.
18 Il avait avec lui mille hommes de Benjamin. Ciba, le serviteur de la maison de Saül, ses quinzefils et ses vingt serviteurs avec lui devancèrent le roi au Jourdain	18 With him were a thousand men from Benjamin. Ziba, servant of the House of Saul, with his fifteensons and twenty servants, arrived at the Jordan before the king
19 et ils mirent tout en oeuvre pour faire traverser la famille du roi et satisfaire son bon plaisir.Shiméï fils de Géra se jeta aux pieds du roi quand il traversait le Jourdain,	19 and worked manful y ferrying the king's family across and doing whatever he required. While the kingwas crossing the Jordan, Shimei son of Gera fel at the king's feet
20 et il dit au roi: "Que Monseigneur ne m'impute pas de faute! Ne te souviens pas du mal que tonserviteur a commis le jour où Monseigneur le roi est sorti de Jérusalem. Que le roi ne le prenne pas à coeur!	20 and said to the king, 'I hope my lord does not regard me as guilty of a crime! Forget about the wrongyour servant did on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. Let my lord not hold my guilt against me.
21 Car ton serviteur reconnaît qu'il a péché, et voici que je suis venu aujourd'hui le premier detoute la maison de Joseph pour descendre au-devant de Monseigneur le roi."	21 For your servant is aware of having sinned, and that is why I have come today -- the first member ofthe whole House of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king.'
22 Abishaï fils de Ceruya prit alors la parole et dit: "Shiméï ne mérite-t-il pas la mort pour avoirmaudit l'oint de Yahvé?"	22 At this, Abishai son of Zeruiah spoke up and said, 'Does Shimei not deserve death for having cursedYahweh's anointed?'
23 Mais David dit: "Qu'ai-je à faire avec vous, fils de Ceruya, pour que vous deveniez aujourd'huimes adversaires? Quelqu'un pourrait-il aujourd'hui être mis à mort en Israël? N'ai-je pas l'assurancequ'aujourd'hui je suis roi sur Israël?"	23 To which David replied, 'What concern is my business to you, sons of Zeruiah, that you shouldoppose my wishes today? Could anyone be put to death in Israel today? Today I know for sure that I am king ofIsrael?'
24 Le roi dit à Shiméï: "Tu ne mourras pas", et le roi le lui jura.	24 'Your life is spared,' the king said. And the king gave him his oath.
25 Meribbaal, le fils de Saül, était descendu aussi au-devant du roi. Il n'avait soigné ni ses pieds nises mains, il n'avait pas taillé sa moustache, il n'avait pas lavé ses vêtements depuis le jour où le roi était partijusqu'au jour où il revint en paix.	25 Meribbaal son of Saul also went down to meet the king. He had not cared for his feet or hands, hehad not trimmed his moustache or washed his clothes from the day of the king's departure til the day of hispeaceful return.
26 Lorsqu'il arriva de Jérusalem au-devant du roi, celui-ci lui demanda: "Pourquoi n'es-tu pas venuavec moi, Meribbaal?"	26 When he arrived from Jerusalem to greet the king, the king asked him, 'Why did you not come withme, Meribbaal?'
27 Il répondit: "Monseigneur le roi, mon serviteur m'a trompé. Ton serviteur lui avait dit: Selle-moi l'ânesse, je la monterai et j'irai avec le roi, car ton serviteur est infirme.	27 'My lord king,' he replied, 'my retainer deceived me. Your servant said to him, "Saddle the donkey forme to ride, so that I can go with the king," your servant being lame.
28 Il a calomnié ton serviteur auprès de Monseigneur le roi. Mais Monseigneur le roi est commel'Ange de Dieu: agis comme il te semble bon.	28 He has slandered your servant to my lord the king. My lord the king, however, is like the Angel ofGod, so do as you think right.
29 Car toute la famille de mon père méritait seulement la mort de la part de Monseigneur le roi, etpourtant tu as admis ton serviteur parmi ceux qui mangent à ta table. Quel droit puis-je avoir d'implorer encore leroi?"	29 My father's entire family deserved no better than death from my lord the king, and yet you admittedyour servant to the ranks of those who eat at your table. What right have I to make any further appeal to theking?'
30 Le roi dit: "Pourquoi continuer de parler? Je décide que toi et Ciba vous partagerez les terres."	30 The king said, 'You need say no more. I rule that you and Ziba divide the property between you.'
31 Meribbaal dit au roi: "Qu'il prenne donc tout puisque Monseigneur le roi est rentré en paix chezlui!"	31 'Let him take it al ,' Meribbaal said to the king, 'since my lord the king has come back home in peace!'
32 Barzillaï le Galaadite était descendu de Roglim et avait continué avec le roi vers le Jourdainpour prendre congé de lui au Jourdain.	32 Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim and accompanied the king towards the Jordan,intending to take leave of him at the Jordan.
33 Barzillaï était très âgé, il avait 80 ans. Il avait pourvu à l'entretien du roi pendant son séjour àMahanayim, car c'était un homme très riche.	33 Barzillai was a man of great age; he was eighty years old. He had kept the king in provisions duringhis stay at Mahanaim, being a very wealthy man.
34 Le roi dit à Barzillaï: "Continue avec moi et je pourvoirai à tes besoins auprès de moi àJérusalem."	34 'Come with me', the king said to Barzil ai, 'and I will provide for you at my side in Jerusalem.'
35 Mais Barzillaï répondit au roi: "Combien d'années me reste-t-il à vivre, pour que je monte avecle roi à Jérusalem?	35 Barzillai replied to the king, 'How many years have I left to live, for me to go up to Jerusalem with theking?
36 J'ai maintenant 80 ans: puis-je distinguer ce qui est bon et ce qui est mauvais? Ton serviteur a-t-il le goût de ce qu'il mange et de ce qu'il boit? Puis-je entendre encore la voix des chanteurs et des chanteuses?Pourquoi ton serviteur serait-il encore à charge à Monseigneur le roi?	36 I am now eighty years old; can I tel the good from the bad? Has your servant any taste for his foodand drink? Can I stil hear the voices of men and women singers? Why should your servant be a further burdento my lord the king?
37 Ton serviteur passera tout juste le Jourdain avec le roi, mais pourquoi le roi m'accorderait-il unetelle récompense?	37 Your servant will go a little way across the Jordan with the king; but why should the king reward meso generously for that?
38 Permets à ton serviteur de s'en retourner: je mourrai dans ma ville près du tombeau de mon pèreet de ma mère. Mais voici ton serviteur Kimhân, qu'il continue avec Monseigneur le roi, et agis comme bon tesemble à son égard."	38 Please allow your servant to go home again, so that I can die in my own town near the grave of myfather and mother. But here is your servant Chimham; let him go with my lord the king; treat him as you thinkright.'
39 Le roi dit: "Que Kimhân continue donc avec moi, je ferai pour lui ce qui te plaira et tout ce quetu solliciteras de moi, je le ferai pour toi."	39 The king said, 'Let Chimham come along with me then; I shall do whatever you wish for him, andanything you request I shal do for your sake.'
40 Tout le peuple passa le Jourdain, le roi passa, il embrassa Barzillaï et le bénit, et celui-ci s'enretourna chez lui.	40 The people then al crossed the Jordan, and the king, having crossed, kissed Barzil ai and blessedhim, and the latter went home.
41 Le roi continua vers Gilgal et Kimhân continua avec lui. Tout le peuple de Juda accompagnaitle roi, et aussi la moitié du peuple d'Israël.	41 The king went on to Gilgal and Chimham went with him. Al the people of Judah accompanied theking, and also half the people of Israel.
42 Et voici que tous les hommes d'Israël vinrent auprès du roi et lui dirent: "Pourquoi nos frères,les hommes de Juda, t'ont-ils enlevé et ont-ils fait passer le Jourdain au roi et à sa famille, et à tous les hommesde David avec lui?"	42 Al the men of Israel then came to the king. 'Why', they asked the king, 'have our brothers, the men ofJudah, carried you off and brought the king and his family across the Jordan, and al David's men with him?'
43 Tous les hommes de Juda répondirent aux hommes d'Israël: "C'est que le roi m'est plusapparenté! Pourquoi t'irriter à ce propos? Avons-nous mangé aux dépens du roi ou nous a-t-il apporté quelqueportion?"	43 Al the men of Judah retorted to the men of Israel, 'Because the king is more closely related to us.Why do you take offence at this? Have we been eating at the king's expense? Have we taken any position forourselves?'
44 Les hommes d'Israël répliquèrent aux hommes de Juda et dirent: "J'ai dix parts sur le roi et deplus je suis ton aîné, pourquoi m'as-tu méprisé? N'ai-je pas parlé le premier de faire revenir mon roi?" Mais lespropos des hommes de Juda furent plus violents que ceux des hommes d'Israël.	44 The men of Israel replied to the men of Judah, 'We have ten shares in the king and, what is more, weare your elder brothers, so why have you slighted us? Were we not the first to suggest bringing back our king?'The men of Judah's words were even more intemperate than those of the men of Israel.
