1 Après cela, il advint que le roi des Ammonites mourut et que son fils Hanûn régna à sa place.	1 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanon his son reigned in his stead.
2 David se dit: "J'aurai pour Hanûn, fils de Nahash, les mêmes bontés que son père a eues pourmoi", et David envoya ses serviteurs lui présenter des condoléances au sujet de son père. Mais lorsque lesserviteurs de David arrivèrent au pays des Ammonites,	2 And David said: I Will shew kindness to Hanon the son of Daas, as his father shewed kindness to me. So David sent his servants to comfort him for the death of his father. But when the servants of David were come into the land of the children of Ammon,
3 les princes des Ammonites dirent à Hanûn leur maître: "T'imagines-tu que David veuille honorerton père, parce qu'il t'a envoyé des porteurs de condoléances? N'est-ce pas plutôt afin d'explorer la ville, pour enconnaître les défenses et la renverser, que David t'a envoyé ses serviteurs?"	3 The princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanon their lord: Thinkest thou that for the honour of thy father, David hath sent comforters to thee, and hath not David rather sent his servants to thee to search, and spy into the city, and overthrow it?
4 Alors Hanûn se saisit des serviteurs de David, il leur fit raser la moitié de la barbe, et couper lesvêtements à mi-hauteur jusqu'aux fesses, puis il les congédia.	4 Wherefore Hanon took the servants of David, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut away half of their garments even to the buttocks, and sent them away.
5 Lorsque David en fut informé, il envoya quelqu'un à leur rencontre, car ces gens étaient couvertsde honte, et le roi leur fit dire: "Restez à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé, et vous reviendrez."	5 When this was told David, he sent to meet them: for the men were sadly put to confusion, and David commanded them, saying: Stay at Jericho, till your beards be grown, and then return.
6 Les Ammonites virent bien qu'ils s'étaient rendus odieux à David et ils envoyèrent des messagerspour prendre à leur solde les Araméens de Bet-Rehob et les Araméens de Coba, 20.000 hommes de pied, le roide Maaka, mille hommes, et le prince de Tob, 12.000 hommes.	6 And the children of Ammon seeing that they had done an injury to David, Bent and hired the Syrians of Rohob, and the Syrians of Soba, twenty thousand footmen, and of the king of Maacha a thousand men, and of Istob twelve thousand men.
7 L'ayant appris, David envoya Joab avec toute l'armée, les preux.	7 And when David heard this, he sent Joab and the whole army of warriors.
8 Les Ammonites sortirent et se rangèrent en bataille à l'entrée de la porte, tandis que les Araméensde Coba et de Rehob et les gens de Tob et de Maaka étaient à part en rase campagne.	8 And the children of Ammon came out, and set their men in array at the entering in of the gate: but the Syrians of Soba, and of Rohob, and of Istob, and of Maacha were by themselves in the field.
9 Voyant qu'il avait un front de combat à la fois devant et derrière lui, Joab fit choix de toute l'élited'Israël et la mit en ligne face au Araméens.	9 Then Joab seeing that the battle was prepared against him, both before and behind, chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:
10 Il confia à son frère Abishaï le reste de l'armée et le mit en ligne face aux Ammonites.	10 And the rest of the people he delivered to Abisai his brother, who set them in array against the children of Ammon.
11 Il dit: "Si les Araméens l'emportent sur moi, tu viendras à mon secours; si les Ammonitesl'emportent sur toi, j'irai te secourir.	11 And Joab said: If the Syrians are too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon are too strong for thee, then I will help thee.
12 Aie bon courage et montrons-nous forts pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu. QueYahvé fasse ce qui lui semblera bon!"	12 Be of good courage, and let us fight for our people, and for the city of our God: and the Lord will do what is good in his sight.
13 Joab et la troupe qui était avec lui engagèrent le combat contre les Araméens et ceux-cis'enfuirent devant eux.	13 And Joab and the people that were with him, began to fight against the Syrians: and they immediately fled before him.
14 Quand les Ammonites virent que les Araméens avaient fui, ils lâchèrent pied devant Abishaï etrentrèrent dans la ville. Alors Joab revint de la guerre contre les Ammonites et rentra à Jérusalem.	14 And the children of Ammon seeing that the Syrians were fled, they fled also before Abisai, and entered into the city: and Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
15 Voyant qu'ils avaient été battus devant Israël, les Araméens concentrèrent leurs forces.	15 Then the Syrians seeing that they had fallen before Israel, gathered themselves together.
16 Hadadézer envoya des messagers et mobilisa les Araméens qui sont de l'autre côté du Fleuve.Ceux-ci arrivèrent à Hélam, ayant à leur tête Shobak, le chef de l'armée de Hadadézer.	16 And Adarezer sent and fetched the Syrians, that were beyond the river, and brought over their army: and Sobach, the captain of the host of Adarezer, was their general.
17 Cela fut rapporté à David, qui rassembla tout Israël, passa le Jourdain et arriva à Hélam. LesAraméens se rangèrent en face de David et lui livrèrent bataille.	17 And when this was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam: and the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought against him.
18 Mais les Araméens lâchèrent pied devant Israël et David leur tua 700 attelages et 40.000hommes, il abattit aussi Shobak, leur général, qui mourut sur les lieux.	18 And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen: and smote Sobach the captain of the army, who presently died.
19 Lorsque tous les rois vassaux de Hadadézer virent qu'ils avaient été battus devant Israël, ilsfirent la paix avec les Israélites et leur furent assujettis. Les Araméens craignirent de porter encore secours auxAmmonites.	19 And all the kings that were auxiliaries of Adarezer, seeing themselves overcome by Israel, were afraid and fled away, eight and fifty thousand men before Israel. And they made peace with Israel: and served them, and all the Syrians were afraid to help the children of Ammon any more.
