1 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord: and he delivered them into the hand of Madian seven years.	1 Os israelitas fizeram o mal aos olhos do Senhor, e o Senhor entregou-os nas mãos dos madianitas durante sete anos.
	2 A mão de Madiã pesou rudemente contra Israel. Por medo dos madianitas, os filhos de Israel refugiaram-se nas cavernas das montanhas, em cavernas e fortificações.
3 And they were grievously oppressed by them. And they made themselves dens and eaves in the mountains, and strong holds to resist.	3 Quando Israel semeava, subia Madiã com Amalec e os filhos do oriente para atacá-lo.
4 And when Israel had sown, Madian and Amalec, and the rest of the eastern nations came up:	4 Acampavam defronte deles e devastavam as suas plantações até a vizinhança de Gaza, e não deixavam aos israelitas provisão alguma, nem ovelhas, nem bois, nem jumentos.
5 And pitching their tents among them, wasted all things as they were in the blade even to the entrance of Gaza: and they left nothing at all in Israel for sustenance of life, nor sheep, nor oxen, nor asses.	5 Subiam com todos os seus rebanhos e tendas, semelhantes a uma nuvem de gafanhotos, e essa multidão inumerável de homens e camelos subia e devastava a terra.
6 For they and all their flocks came with their tents, and like locusts filled all places, an innumerable multitude of men, and of camels, wasting whatsoever they touched.	6 Os israelitas ficaram desse modo extenuados pelos madianitas, e clamaram ao Senhor.
7 And Israel was humbled exceedingly in the sight of Madian.	7 E, tendo eles clamado ao Senhor, pedindo socorro contra os madianitas, o Senhor mandou-lhes um profeta,
8 And he cried to the Lord desiring help against the Madianites.	8 que lhes disse: Eis o oráculo do Senhor, Deus de Israel: eu vos fiz sair do Egito e vos tirei da servidão;
9 And he sent unto them a prophet, and he spoke: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I made you to come up out of Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage,	9 livrei-vos da mão dos egípcios e de vossos opressores; expulsei-os de diante de vós e dei-vos a sua terra.
10 And delivered you out of the hands of the Egyptians, and of all the enemies that afflicted you: and I cast them out at your coming in, and gave you their land.	10 E disse-vos: eu sou o Senhor, vosso Deus: não adorareis os deuses dos amorreus, em cuja terra ides habitar. Mas não ouvistes a minha voz.
11 dummy verses inserted by amos	11 Depois veio o anjo do Senhor e sentou-se debaixo do terebinto de Efra, que pertencia a Joás, da família de Abieser. Gedeão, seu filho, estava limpando o trigo no lagar, para escondê-lo dos madianitas.
12 And an angel of the Lord came, and sat under an oak, that was in Ephra, and belonged to Joas the father of the family of Ezri. And when Gedeon his son was threshing and cleansing wheat by the winepress, to flee from Madian,	12 O anjo do Senhor apareceu-lhe e disse-lhe: O Senhor está contigo, valente guerreiro!
13 The angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said: The Lord is with thee, O most valiant of men.	13 Gedeão respondeu: Ah, meu senhor, se o Senhor está conosco, por que nos vieram todos esses males? Onde estão aqueles prodígios que nos contaram nossos pais, dizendo: o Senhor fez-nos verdadeiramente sair do Egito? Agora o Senhor abandonou-nos e entregou-nos nas mãos dos madianitas.
14 And Gedeon said to him: I beseech thee, my lord, if the Lord be with us, why have these evils fallen upon us? Where are his miracles, which our fathers have told us of, saying: The Lord brought us Out of Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the bands of Madian.	14 Então o Senhor, voltando-se para ele: Vai, disse, com essa força que tens e livra Israel dos madianitas. Porventura não sou eu que te envio?
15 And the Lord looked upon him, and said: Go in this thy strength, and then shalt deliver Israel out of the hand of Madian: know that I have sent thee.	15 Ó Senhor, respondeu Gedeão, com que livrarei eu Israel? Minha família é a última de Manassés, e eu sou o menor na casa de meu pai.
16 He answered and said: I beseech thee, my lord, wherewith shall I deliver Israel? Behold my family is the meanest in Manasses, and I am the least in my father's house.	16 O Senhor replicou: Eu estarei contigo e tu derrotarás os madianitas como se fossem um só homem.
17 And the Lord said to him: I will be with thee: and thou shalt cut off Madian as one man.	17 Prosseguiu Gedeão: Se encontrei graça aos vossos olhos, provai-me por um sinal que sois vós quem me falais.
18 And he said: If I have found grace before thee, give me a sign that it is thou that speakest to me,	18 Não vos afasteis daqui até que eu volte trazendo uma oferta, e a ponha diante de vós. Esperarei, respondeu o Senhor, até que voltes.
19 And depart not hence, till I return to thee, and bring a sacrifice, and offer it to thee. And he answered: I will wait thy coming.	19 Gedeão entrou em sua casa, preparou um cabrito e fez pães sem fermento com um efá de farinha. Pôs a carne num cesto e o caldo numa panela, levou tudo debaixo do terebinto e ofereceu-lho.
20 So Gedeon went in, and boiled a kid, and made unleavened loaves of a measure of flour: and putting the flesh in a basket, and the broth of the flesh into a pot, he carried all under the oak, and presented to him.	20 O anjo do Senhor disse-lhe: Toma a carne e os pães sem fermento, põe-nos sobre aquela pedra e derrama por cima o caldo. Ele assim o fez.
21 And the angel of the Lord said to him: Take the flesh and the unleavened loaves, and lay them upon that rock, and pour out the broth thereon. And when he had done so,	21 Então o anjo do Senhor estendeu a ponta da vara que tinha na mão, tocou a carne com os pães sem fermento, e imediatamente jorrou fogo da rocha que consumiu a carne e os pães sem fermento; e o anjo do Senhor desapareceu de seus olhos.
22 The angel of the Lord put forth the tip of the rod, which he held in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and there arose a fire from the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and the angel of the Lord vanished out of his sight.	22 Gedeão reconheceu que era o anjo do Senhor e exclamou: Ai de mim, Senhor Javé, que vi o anjo do Senhor face a face.
23 And Gedeon seeing that it was the angel of the Lord, said: Alas, my Lord God: for I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.	23 O Senhor disse-lhe: Tranqüiliza-te; não temas, não morrerás.
24 And the Lord said to him: Peace be with thee: fear not, thou shalt not die.	24 Gedeão edificou ali um altar ao Senhor e chamou-o Javé-Chalom. Esse altar existe ainda hoje em Efra de Abieser.
25 And Gedeon built there an altar to the Lord, and called it the Lord's peace, until this present day. And when he was yet in Ephra, which is of the family of Ezri,	25 Durante a noite disse-lhe o Senhor: Toma o novilho de teu pai e um segundo touro de sete anos; destrói o altar de Baal de teu pai e faze o mesmo com o ídolo de madeira que está junto dele.
26 That night the Lord said to him: Take a bullock of thy father's, and another bullock of seven years, and thou shalt destroy the altar of Baal, which is thy father's: and cut down the grove that is about the altar:	26 Edificarás então um altar ao Senhor, teu Deus, em cima dessa pedra, depois de a teres preparado. Tomarás o segundo touro e o oferecerás em holocausto usando a madeira do ídolo que tiveres cortado.
27 And thou shalt build an altar to the Lord thy God in the top of this rock, whereupon thou didst lay the sacrifice before: and thou shalt take the second bullock, and shalt offer a holocaust upon a pile of the wood, which thou shalt cut down out of the grove.	27 Gedeão escolheu dez dos seus servos e fez o que o Senhor lhe tinha ordenado. Temendo, porém, a família de seu pai e os habitantes da cidade, não o quis fazer durante o dia; executou tudo durante a noite.
28 Then Gedeon taking ten men of his servants, did as the Lord had commanded him. But fearing his father's house, and the men of that city, he would not do it by day, but did all by night.	28 Chegada a manhã, quando os habitantes da cidade se levantaram, eis que viram o altar de Baal derrubado por terra, o ídolo vizinho cortado, e o segundo touro queimado em holocausto sobre o novo altar.
29 And when the men of that town were risen in the morning, they saw the altar of Baal destroyed, and the grove cut down, and the second bullock laid upon the altar, which then was built.	29 Quem fez isto?, perguntaram uns aos outros. Depois de haverem buscado e investigado cuidadosamente, foi-lhes dito: Foi Gedeão, filho de Joás.
30 And they said one to another: Who hath done this? And when they inquired for the author of the fact, it was said: Gedeon the son of Joas did all this.	30 Disseram então a Joás: Faze vir aqui o teu filho, para que seja morto, porque ele derrubou o altar de Baal e cortou o ídolo de madeira que estava perto!
31 And they said to Joas: Bring out thy son hither, that he may die: because he hath destroyed the altar of Baal, and hath cut down his grove.	31 Joás respondeu a todos os que o interpelavam: Porventura sois vós que deveis tomar o partido de Baal? Sois vós que deveis socorrê-lo? Pois aquele que tomar o partido de Baal será morto hoje mesmo. Se Baal é deus, que defenda ele mesmo a sua causa, pois derrubaram o seu altar!
32 He answered them: Are you the avengers of Baal, that you fight for him? he that is his adversary, let him die before to morrow light appear: if he be a god, let him revenge himself on him that hath cast down his altar.	32 Daquele dia em diante, Gedeão foi chamado Jerobaal, dizendo: Que Baal defenda a sua causa contra ele, pois ele derrubou o seu altar!
33 From that day Gedeon was called Jerobaal, because Joss had said: Let Baal revenge himself on him that hath cast down his altar.	33 Todos os madianitas, os amalecitas e os filhos do oriente se tinham coligado e, tendo passado o Jordão, acamparam no vale de Jezrael.
34 Now all Madian, and Amalec, and the eastern people were gathered together, and passing over the Jordan, camped in the valley of Jezrael.	34 O Espírito do Senhor apoderou-se de Gedeão, o qual, tocando a trombeta, convocou os filhos de Abieser para que o seguissem.
35 But the spirit of the Lord came upon Gedeon, and be sounded the trumpet and called together the house of Abiezer, to follow him.	35 Enviou mensageiros por toda a tribo de Manassés, que se reuniu para segui-lo; e enviou também mensageiros às tribos de Aser, de Zabulon e de Neftali, e todos vieram juntar-se a ele.
36 And he sent messengers into all Manasses, and they also followed him: and other messengers into Aser and Zabulon and Nephtali, and they came to meet him.	36 Gedeão disse a Deus: Se quereis realmente salvar Israel por meio de minha mão, como o dissestes,
37 And Gedeon said to God: If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said,	37 eis que vou estender um velo de lã na eira: se o orvalho cair só no velo, ficando toda a terra seca, reconhecerei que é por minha mão que livrareis Israel, como o dissestes.
38 I will put this fleece of wool on the floor: if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry on all the ground beside, I, shall know that by my hand, as thou hast said, thou wilt deliver Israel.	38 E assim aconteceu. Levantando-se Gedeão no dia seguinte pela manhã, espremeu a lã e encheu um copo de orvalho.
39 And it was so. And rising before day wringing the fleece, he filled a vessel with the dew.	39 Gedeão disse de novo a Deus: Não se acenda contra mim a vossa cólera se vos falo ainda uma vez! Só quero fazer mais uma prova com o velo: peço que só a lã fique seca, e o orvalho molhe toda a terra em redor.
40 And he said again to God: let not thy wrath be kindled against me if I try once more, seeking a sign in the fleece. I pray that the fleece only may be dry, and all the ground wet with dew.	40 E Deus assim o fez naquela noite: só o velo ficou seco, enquanto todo o solo estava coberto de orvalho.
