1 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord: and he delivered them into the hand of Madian seven years.	1 Les Israélites firent ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé et Yahvé les livra pour sept ans entre les mains de Madian.
	2 L’oppression de Madian fut dure pour Israël, et c’est à cause de Madian que les Israélites aménagèrent les fentes des montagnes, les grottes et les repaires.
3 And they were grievously oppressed by them. And they made themselves dens and eaves in the mountains, and strong holds to resist.	3 Lorsque Israël avait semé, Madian faisait un raid avec Amalec et les fils de l’Orient.
4 And when Israel had sown, Madian and Amalec, and the rest of the eastern nations came up:	4 Ils s’installaient sur sa terre et dévastaient tous les champs jusqu’aux environs de Gaza; il ne restait rien à manger en Israël, ni moutons, ni bœufs, ni ânes.
5 And pitching their tents among them, wasted all things as they were in the blade even to the entrance of Gaza: and they left nothing at all in Israel for sustenance of life, nor sheep, nor oxen, nor asses.	5 Ils arrivaient avec leurs troupeaux et leurs tentes, aussi nombreux que des sauterelles; on ne pouvait les compter, eux et leurs chameaux, quand ils arrivaient dans le pays pour tout ravager.
6 For they and all their flocks came with their tents, and like locusts filled all places, an innumerable multitude of men, and of camels, wasting whatsoever they touched.	6 Israël était dans la misère à cause de Madian, et les Israélites crièrent vers Yahvé.
7 And Israel was humbled exceedingly in the sight of Madian.	7 Voici ce qui arriva quand les Israélites criaient vers Yahvé à cause de Madian.
8 And he cried to the Lord desiring help against the Madianites.	8 Yahvé envoya un prophète qui leur fit entendre cette parole de Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: “C’est moi qui vous ai fait monter d’Égypte, qui vous ai fait sortir de la maison de l’esclavage.
9 And he sent unto them a prophet, and he spoke: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I made you to come up out of Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage,	9 Comme je vous avais délivrés de la main des Égyptiens, je vous ai délivrés de tous ceux qui vous opprimaient. Je les ai chassés devant vous et je vous ai donné leur pays.
10 And delivered you out of the hands of the Egyptians, and of all the enemies that afflicted you: and I cast them out at your coming in, and gave you their land.	10 Alors je vous ai dit: Je suis Yahvé votre Dieu, ne tenez aucun compte des dieux des Amorites dont vous habitez le pays. Mais vous n’avez pas écouté ma voix.”
11 dummy verses inserted by amos	11 L’Ange de Yahvé vint s’asseoir sous le térébinthe qui est à Ofra, il appartenait à Yoach du clan d’Abiézer. Or Gédéon, son fils, était en train de battre le blé dans le pressoir pour le cacher aux Madianites.
12 And an angel of the Lord came, and sat under an oak, that was in Ephra, and belonged to Joas the father of the family of Ezri. And when Gedeon his son was threshing and cleansing wheat by the winepress, to flee from Madian,	12 L’Ange de Yahvé lui apparut et lui dit: “Yahvé est avec toi, courageux guerrier!”
13 The angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said: The Lord is with thee, O most valiant of men.	13 Gédéon répondit: “Je t’en prie mon seigneur, si Yahvé est avec nous, pourquoi tout cela nous arrive-t-il? Où sont donc tous ces prodiges que nous ont racontés nos pères, quand ils nous disaient: Yahvé nous a fait monter d’Égypte? Pour l’instant Yahvé nous a laissé tomber et nous a livrés entre les mains de Madian.”
14 And Gedeon said to him: I beseech thee, my lord, if the Lord be with us, why have these evils fallen upon us? Where are his miracles, which our fathers have told us of, saying: The Lord brought us Out of Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the bands of Madian.	14 Alors Yahvé se tourna vers lui et lui dit: “Va! tu es bien assez fort pour délivrer Israël de la main de Madian: c’est moi qui t’envoie!”
15 And the Lord looked upon him, and said: Go in this thy strength, and then shalt deliver Israel out of the hand of Madian: know that I have sent thee.	15 Mais il répondit: “Je t’en prie, Mon Seigneur, comment sauverai-je Israël? Mon clan est le plus petit de la tribu de Manassé, et moi, je suis le plus petit dans la maison de mon père.”
16 He answered and said: I beseech thee, my lord, wherewith shall I deliver Israel? Behold my family is the meanest in Manasses, and I am the least in my father's house.	16 Yahvé lui dit: “Je serai avec toi et tu battras Madian comme un seul homme.”
17 And the Lord said to him: I will be with thee: and thou shalt cut off Madian as one man.	17 Il répondit: “Si vraiment j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, fais-moi voir un signe et je saurai que c’est bien toi qui me parles.
18 And he said: If I have found grace before thee, give me a sign that it is thou that speakest to me,	18 Ne t’éloigne donc pas d’ici jusqu’à ce que je revienne avec une offrande que je déposerai devant toi.” Yahvé répondit: “Je resterai jusqu’à ton retour.”
19 And depart not hence, till I return to thee, and bring a sacrifice, and offer it to thee. And he answered: I will wait thy coming.	19 Gédéon s’en alla donc; il prépara un chevreau et, avec une mesure de farine, il fit des pains sans levain. Il mit la viande dans une corbeille et le jus dans un pot, et il apporta le tout sous le térébinthe pour le lui offrir.
20 So Gedeon went in, and boiled a kid, and made unleavened loaves of a measure of flour: and putting the flesh in a basket, and the broth of the flesh into a pot, he carried all under the oak, and presented to him.	20 L’Ange de Dieu lui dit alors: “Prends la viande et les pains sans levain, dépose-les sur le rocher qui est là, et verse le jus.” C’est ce qu’il fit.
21 And the angel of the Lord said to him: Take the flesh and the unleavened loaves, and lay them upon that rock, and pour out the broth thereon. And when he had done so,	21 Alors l’ange de Yahvé étendit son bâton et, du bout de son bâton, il toucha la viande et les pains sans levain: le feu s’éleva du rocher et consuma la viande et les pains sans levain; quant à l’Ange de Yahvé, il avait disparu de devant ses yeux.
22 The angel of the Lord put forth the tip of the rod, which he held in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and there arose a fire from the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and the angel of the Lord vanished out of his sight.	22 Gédéon comprit que c’était l’Ange de Yahvé et il dit: “Malheur à moi, Seigneur Yahvé, car vraiment j’ai vu l’Ange de Yahvé face à face!”
23 And Gedeon seeing that it was the angel of the Lord, said: Alas, my Lord God: for I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.	23 Mais Yahvé lui dit: “Sois sans crainte, tu ne mourras pas.”
24 And the Lord said to him: Peace be with thee: fear not, thou shalt not die.	24 Gédéon construisit un autel à Yahvé en ce lieu et il l’appela: Yahvé-Paix. Il existe encore aujourd’hui à Ofra, sur les terres d’Abiézer.
25 And Gedeon built there an altar to the Lord, and called it the Lord's peace, until this present day. And when he was yet in Ephra, which is of the family of Ezri,	25 Cette même nuit Yahvé lui dit: “Prends le jeune taureau de ton père. Tu démoliras l’autel de Baal qui appartient à ton père et tu couperas l’ashéra qui est à côté.
26 That night the Lord said to him: Take a bullock of thy father's, and another bullock of seven years, and thou shalt destroy the altar of Baal, which is thy father's: and cut down the grove that is about the altar:	26 Puis tu bâtiras un autel à Yahvé ton Dieu, sur le sommet de cette colline fortifiée, et tu prépareras le jeune taureau pour l’offrir par le feu sur le bois de l’ashéra que tu auras coupée.”
27 And thou shalt build an altar to the Lord thy God in the top of this rock, whereupon thou didst lay the sacrifice before: and thou shalt take the second bullock, and shalt offer a holocaust upon a pile of the wood, which thou shalt cut down out of the grove.	27 Gédéon prit donc dix de ses serviteurs et fit ce que Yahvé lui avait ordonné. Mais il avait peur de le faire de jour, car il craignait la famille de son père et les hommes de la ville; c’est pourquoi il fit cela de nuit.
28 Then Gedeon taking ten men of his servants, did as the Lord had commanded him. But fearing his father's house, and the men of that city, he would not do it by day, but did all by night.	28 Quand les hommes de la ville se levèrent de bon matin, ils virent que l’autel de Baal était renversé; l’ashéra qui se trouvait à côté avait été coupée, et le jeune taureau avait été offert en holocauste sur le nouvel autel.
29 And when the men of that town were risen in the morning, they saw the altar of Baal destroyed, and the grove cut down, and the second bullock laid upon the altar, which then was built.	29 Ils se demandaient l’un à l’autre qui avait fait cela. Ils se mirent à questionner, à interroger, et on leur répondit: “C’est Gédéon fils de Yoach qui l’a fait.”
30 And they said one to another: Who hath done this? And when they inquired for the author of the fact, it was said: Gedeon the son of Joas did all this.	30 Les hommes de la ville dirent à Yoach: “Fais sortir ton fils et qu’il meure! C’est lui qui a renversé l’autel de Baal et coupé l’ashéra qui était à côté.”
31 And they said to Joas: Bring out thy son hither, that he may die: because he hath destroyed the altar of Baal, and hath cut down his grove.	31 Mais Yoach répondit à tous ceux qui s’étaient attroupés autour de lui: “Est-ce à vous de défendre Baal? Est-ce à vous de le délivrer? Si quelqu’un défend Baal, il sera mis à mort avant le matin; si Baal est Dieu, qu’il se défende lui-même puisqu’on a renversé son autel.”
32 He answered them: Are you the avengers of Baal, that you fight for him? he that is his adversary, let him die before to morrow light appear: if he be a god, let him revenge himself on him that hath cast down his altar.	32 Ce jour-là on donna à Gédéon le surnom de Yéroubbaal, car on disait: “Que Baal s’en prenne à lui, puisqu’il a renversé son autel.”
33 From that day Gedeon was called Jerobaal, because Joss had said: Let Baal revenge himself on him that hath cast down his altar.	33 Tous les Madianites, les Amalécites et les fils de l’Orient se donnèrent rendez-vous; ils passèrent le Jourdain et campèrent dans la plaine de Yizréel.
34 Now all Madian, and Amalec, and the eastern people were gathered together, and passing over the Jordan, camped in the valley of Jezrael.	34 Alors l’esprit de Yahvé s’empara de Gédéon. Il sonna du cor et tout le clan d’Abiézer se rassembla derrière lui.
35 But the spirit of the Lord came upon Gedeon, and be sounded the trumpet and called together the house of Abiezer, to follow him.	35 Il envoya des messagers dans tous le pays de Manassé, qui lui aussi se rassembla derrière lui. Il envoya encore des messagers en Asher, en Zabulon et en Nephtali, et ils vinrent à sa rencontre.
36 And he sent messengers into all Manasses, and they also followed him: and other messengers into Aser and Zabulon and Nephtali, and they came to meet him.	36 Gédéon dit à Dieu: “Si vraiment tu veux sauver Israël par ma main, comme tu l’as dit, accorde-moi ce signe.
37 And Gedeon said to God: If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said,	37 Je mettrai une toison de laine sur l’aire. Si la toison seule a de la rosée, alors que toute la terre autour reste sèche, je saurai que tu veux délivrer Israël par ma main, comme tu l’as dit.”
38 I will put this fleece of wool on the floor: if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry on all the ground beside, I, shall know that by my hand, as thou hast said, thou wilt deliver Israel.	38 C’est ce qui arriva. Quand il se leva de bon matin, il pressa la toison et il fit égoutter la rosée, de quoi remplir une coupe.
39 And it was so. And rising before day wringing the fleece, he filled a vessel with the dew.	39 Gédéon dit alors à Dieu: “Ne te fâche pas contre moi. Laisse-moi parler une fois encore et renouveler rien qu’une fois l’épreuve de la toison: que la toison seule reste sèche et que toute la terre autour soit couverte de rosée.”
40 And he said again to God: let not thy wrath be kindled against me if I try once more, seeking a sign in the fleece. I pray that the fleece only may be dry, and all the ground wet with dew.	40 Dieu fit ainsi cette nuit-là, et la toison resta sèche alors que la rosée couvrait la terre.
