DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
And having called his twelve disciples together, he gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of diseases, and all manner of infirmities.1 He summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to drivethem out and to cure all kinds of disease and all kinds of il ness.
And the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother,2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon who is known as Peter, and his brotherAndrew; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the publican, and James the son of Alpheus, and Thaddeus,3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax col ector; James the son of Alphaeus, andThaddaeus;
Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who was also his betrayer.
These twelve Jesus sent: commanding them, saying: Go ye not into the way of the Gentiles, and into the city of the Samaritans enter ye not.5 These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as fol ows: 'Do not make your way to gentile territory,and do not enter any Samaritan town;
But go ye rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.6 go instead to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.
And going, preach, saying: The kingdom of heaven is at hand.7 And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils: freely have you received, freely give.8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those suffering from virulent skin-diseases, drive out devils. Youreceived without charge, give without charge.
Do not possess gold, nor silver, nor money in your purses:9 Provide yourselves with no gold or silver, not even with coppers for your purses,
Nor scrip for your journey, nor two coats, nor shoes, nor a staff; for the workman is worthy of his meat.10 with no haversack for the journey or spare tunic or footwear or a staff, for the labourer deserves hiskeep.
And into whatsoever city or town you shall enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and there abide till you go thence.11 'Whatever town or vil age you go into, seek out someone worthy and stay with him until you leave.
And when you come into the house, salute it, saying: Peace be to this house.12 As you enter his house, salute it,
And if that house be worthy, your peace shall come upon it; but if it be not worthy, your peace shall return to you.13 and if the house deserves it, may your peace come upon it; if it does not, may your peace come backto you.
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words: going forth out of that house or city shake off the dust from your feet.14 And if anyone does not welcome you or listen to what you have to say, as you walk out of the houseor town shake the dust from your feet.
Amen I say to you, it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.15 In truth I tel you, on the Day of Judgement it wil be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah than forthat town.
Behold I send you as sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye therefore wise as serpents and simple as doves.16 Look, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; so be cunning as snakes and yet innocent asdoves.
But beware of men. For they will deliver you up in councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues.17 'Be prepared for people to hand you over to sanhedrins and scourge you in their synagogues.
And you shall be brought before governors, and before kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles:18 You will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, as evidence to them and to the gentiles.
But when they shall deliver you up, take no thought how or what to speak: for it shall be given you in that hour what to speak.19 But when you are handed over, do not worry about how to speak or what to say; what you are to saywil be given to you when the time comes,
For it is not you that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you.20 because it is not you who wil be speaking; the Spirit of your Father wil be speaking in you.
The brother also shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the son: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and shall put them to death.21 'Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children wil come forward against theirparents and have them put to death.
And you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake: but he that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved.22 You will be universally hated on account of my name; but anyone who stands firm to the end wil besaved.
And when they shall persecute you in this city, flee into another. Amen I say to you, you shall not finish all the cities of Israel, till the Son of man come.23 If they persecute you in one town, take refuge in the next; and if they persecute you in that, takerefuge in another. In truth I tel you, you wil not have gone the round of the towns of Israel before the Son of mancomes.
The disciple is not above the master, nor the servant above his lord.24 'Disciple is not superior to teacher, nor slave to master.
It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the goodman of the house Beelzebub, how much more them of his household?25 It is enough for disciple to grow to be like teacher, and slave like master. If they have called themaster of the house "Beelzebul", how much more the members of his household?
Therefore fear them not. For nothing is covered that shall not be revealed: nor hid, that shall not be known.26 'So do not be afraid of them. Everything now covered up wil be uncovered, and everything nowhidden wil be made clear.
That which I tell you in the dark, speak ye in the light: and that which you hear in the ear, preach ye upon the housetops.27 What I say to you in the dark, tel in the daylight; what you hear in whispers, proclaim from thehousetops.
And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell.28 'Do not be afraid of those who kil the body but cannot kill the soul; fear him rather who can destroyboth body and soul in hell.
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father.29 Can you not buy two sparrows for a penny? And yet not one falls to the ground without your Fatherknowing.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.30 Why, every hair on your head has been counted.
Fear not therefore: better are you than many sparrows.31 So there is no need to be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Every one therefore that shall confess me before men, I will also confess him before my Father who is in heaven.32 'So if anyone declares himself for me in the presence of human beings, I wil declare myself for him inthe presence of my Father in heaven.
But he that shall deny me before men, I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven.33 But the one who disowns me in the presence of human beings, I wil disown in the presence of myFather in heaven.
Do not think that I came to send peace upon earth: I came not to send peace, but the sword.34 'Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth: it is not peace I have come to bring, buta sword.
For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.35 For I have come to set son against father, daughter against mother, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law;
And as a man's enemies shall be they of his own household.36 a person's enemies will be the members of his own household.
He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me.37 'No one who prefers father or mother to me is worthy of me. No one who prefers son or daughter tome is worthy of me.
And he that taketh not up his cross, and followeth me, is not worthy of me.38 Anyone who does not take his cross and fol ow in my footsteps is not worthy of me.
He that findeth his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for me, shall find it.39 Anyone who finds his life wil lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake wil find it.
He that receiveth you, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.40 'Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one whosent me.
He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive the reward of a prophet: and he that receiveth a just man in the name of a just man, shall receive the reward of a just man.41 'Anyone who welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet wil have a prophet's reward; and anyonewho welcomes an upright person because he is upright wil have the reward of an upright person.
And whosoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, amen I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.42 'If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple,then in truth I tel you, he wil most certainly not go without his reward.'
