DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And Abraham married another wife, named Cetura:1 Abraham married another wife, whose name was Keturah.
Who bore to him Zamran, and Jecsan, and Madan, and Madian, and Jesboc, and Sue.2 She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
Jecsan also begot Saba and Dadan. The children of Dadan were Assurim, and Latusim, and Loomin.3 Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. The descendants of Dedan were the Asshurim, the Letushim, and the Leummim.
But of Madian was born Epha, and Opher, and Henoch, and Abida, and Eldaa: all these were the children of Cetura.4 The descendants of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All of these were descendants of Keturah.
And Abraham gave all his possessions to Isaac.5 Abraham deeded everything that he owned to his son Isaac.
And to the children of the concubines he gave gifts, and separated them from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, to the east country.6 To his sons by concubinage, however, he made grants while he was still living, as he sent them away eastward, to the land of Kedem, away from his son Isaac.
And the days of Abraham's life were a hundred and seventy-five years.7 The whole span of Abraham's life was one hundred and seventy-five years.
And decaying he died in a good old age, and having lived a long time, and being full of days: and was gathered to his people.8 Then he breathed his last, dying at a ripe old age, grown old after a full life; and he was taken to his kinsmen.
And Isaac and Ismael his sons buried him in the double cave, which was situated in the field of Ephron the son of Seor the Hethite, over against Mambre;9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, son of Zohar the Hittite, which faces Mamre,
Which he had bought of the children of Heth: there was he buried, and Sara his wife.10 the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites; there he was buried next to his wife Sarah.
And after his death, God blessed Isaac his son, who dwelt by the well named Of the living and seeing.11 After the death of Abraham, God blessed his son Isaac, who made his home near Beer-lahai-roi.
These are the generations of Ismael the son of Abraham, whom Agar the Egyptian, Sara's servant, bore unto him:12 These are the descendants of Abraham's son Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's slave, bore to Abraham.
And these are the names of his children according to their calling and generations. The firstborn of Ismael was Nabajoth, then Cedar, and Adbeel, and Mabsam.13 These are the names of Ishmael's sons, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth (Ishmael's firstborn), Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
And Masma, and Duma, and Massa,14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
Hadar, and Thema, and Jethur, and Naphis, and Cedma.15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
These are the sons of Ismael: and these are their names by their castles and towns, twelve princes of their tribes.16 These are the sons of Ishmael, their names by their villages and encampments; twelve chieftains of as many tribal groups.
And the years of Ismael's life were a hundred and thirty-seven, and decaying he died, and was gathered unto his people.17 The span of Ishmael's life was one hundred and thirty-seven years. After he had breathed his last and died, he was taken to his kinsmen.
And he dwelt from Hevila as far as Sur, which looketh towards Egypt, to them that go towards the Assyrians. He died in the presence of all his brethren.18 The Ishmaelites ranged from Havilah-by-Shur, which is on the border of Egypt, all the way to Asshur; and each of them pitched camp in opposition to his various kinsmen.
These also are the generations of Isaac the son of Abraham: Abraham begot Isaac:19 This is the family history of Isaac, son of Abraham; Abraham had begotten Isaac.
Who when he was forty years old, took to wife Rebecca the daughter of Bathuel the Syrian of Mesopotamia, sister to Laban.20 Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean.
And Isaac besought the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and he heard him, and made Rebecca to conceive.21 Isaac entreated the LORD on behalf of his wife, since she was sterile. The LORD heard his entreaty, and Rebekah became pregnant.
But the children struggled in her womb: and she said: If it were to be so with me, what need was there to conceive? And she went to consult the Lord.22 But the children in her womb jostled each other so much that she exclaimed, "If this is to be so, what good will it do me!" She went to consult the LORD,
And he answering said: Two nations are in thy womb, and two peoples shall be divided out of thy womb, and one people shall overcome the other, and the elder shall serve the younger.23 and he answered her: "Two nations are in your womb, two peoples are quarreling while still within you; But one shall surpass the other, and the older shall serve the younger."
And when her time was come to be delivered, behold twins were found in her womb.24 When the time of her delivery came, there were twins in her womb.
He that came forth first was red, and hairy like a skin: and his name was called Esau. Immediately the other coming forth, held his brother's foot in his hand, and therefore he was called Jacob.25 The first to emerge was reddish, and his whole body was like a hairy mantle; so they named him Esau.
Isaac was threescore years old when the children were born unto him.26 His brother came out next, gripping Esau's heel; so they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.
And when they were grown up, Esau became a skillful hunter, and a husbandman, but Jacob a plain man dwelt in tents.27 As the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man who lived in the open; whereas Jacob was a simple man, who kept to his tents.
Isaac loved Esau, because he ate of his hunting: and Rebecca loved Jacob.28 Isaac preferred Esau, because he was fond of game; but Rebekah preferred Jacob.
And Jacob boiled Pottage: to whom Esau, coming faint out of the field,29 Once, when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the open, famished.
Said: Give me of this red pottage, for I am exceeding faint. For which reason his name was called Edom.30 He said to Jacob, "Let me gulp down some of that red stuff; I'm starving." (That is why he was called Edom.)
And Jacob said to him: Sell me thy first birthright.31 But Jacob replied, "First give me your birthright in exchange for it."
He answered: Lo I die, what will the first birthright avail me.32 "Look," said Esau, "I'm on the point of dying. What good will any birthright do me?"
Jacob said: Swear therefore to me. Esau swore to him, and sold his first birthright.33 But Jacob insisted, "Swear to me first!" So he sold Jacob his birthright under oath.
And so taking bread and the pottage of lentils, he ate, and drank, and went his way; making little account of having sold his first birthright.34 Jacob then gave him some bread and the lentil stew; and Esau ate, drank, got up, and went his way. Esau cared little for his birthright.
