1 LE mosche morte fanno putire, e ribollir l’olio odorifero del profumiere; così un poco di stoltizia guasta il pregio della sapienza e della gloria.	1 Dying flies ruin the sweetness of the ointment. Wisdom and glory is more precious than a brief and limited foolishness.
2 L’uomo savio ha il suo cuore alla sua destra, e lo stolto l’ha alla sua sinistra.	2 The heart of a wise man is in his right hand, and the heart of a foolish man is in his left hand.
3 Lo stolto, eziandio mentre egli cammina per la via, è scemo di senno, e dice a tutti ch’egli è stolto	3 Moreover, as a foolish man is walking along the way, even though he himself is unwise, he considers everyone to be foolish.
4 Se il principe monta in ira contro a te, non lasciar però il tuo luogo; perciocchè la dolcezza fa perdonar di gran peccati.	4 If the spirit of one who holds authority rises over you, do not leave your place, because attentiveness will cause the greatest sins to cease.
5 Vi è un male che io ho veduto sotto il sole, simile all’errore che procede dal principe.	5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, proceeding from the presence of a prince, as if by mistake:
6 Cioè: che la stoltizia è posta in grandi altezze, ed i ricchi seggono in luoghi bassi.	6 a foolish man appointed to a high dignity, and the rich sitting beneath him.
7 Io ho veduti i servi a cavallo, ed i ricchi camminare a piè come servi.	7 I have seen servants on horses, and princes walking on the ground like servants.
8 Chi cava la fossa caderà in essa; e chi rompe la chiusura il serpente lo morderà.	8 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it. And whoever tears apart a hedge, a snake will bite him.
9 Chi rimuove le pietre ne sarà offeso; chi spezza delle legne ne sarà in pericolo.	9 Whoever carries away stones will be harmed by them. And whoever cuts down trees will be wounded by them.
10 Se il ferro è rintuzzato, e non se ne arrota il taglio, bisogna raddoppiar la forza; ma la sapienza è cosa eccellente, per addirizzar le cose.	10 If the iron is dull, and if it was not that way before, but has been made dull by much labor, then it will be sharpened. And wisdom will follow after diligence.
11 Se il serpente morde, non essendo incantato, niente meglio vale il maldicente	11 Whoever slanders in secret is nothing less than a snake that bites silently.
12 Le parole della bocca del savio non sono altro che grazia; ma le labbra dello stolto lo distruggono.	12 Words from the mouth of a wise man are graceful, but the lips of a foolish man will throw him down with violence.
13 Il principio delle parole della sua bocca è stoltizia, ed il fine del suo parlare è mala pazzia.	13 At the beginning of his words is foolishness, and at the end of his talk is a most grievous error.
14 Benchè lo stolto moltiplichi le parole, l’uomo pur non sa ciò che ha da essere; e chi gli dichiarerà ciò che sarà dopo lui?	14 The fool multiplies his words. A man does not know what has been before him, and who is able to reveal to him what will be in the future after him?
15 La fatica degli stolti li stanca; perciocchè non sanno la via per andare alla città	15 The hardship of the foolish will afflict those who do not know to go into the city.
16 Guai a te, o paese, il cui re è fanciullo, ed i cui principi mangiano fin dalla mattina!	16 Woe to you, the land whose king is a boy, and whose princes consume in the morning.
17 Beato te, o paese, il cui re è di legnaggio nobile, ed i cui principi mangiano a tempo convenevole, per ristoro, e non per ebbrezza!	17 Blessed is the land whose king is noble, and whose princes eat at the proper time, for refreshment and not for self-indulgence.
18 Per la pigrizia di ambe le mani il solaio scade, e per le mani spenzolate gocciola in casa.	18 By laziness, a framework shall be brought down, and by the weakness of hands, a house shall collapse through.
19 I conviti si fanno per gioire, e il vino rallegra i viventi; ed i danari rispondono a tutto.	19 While laughing, they make bread and wine, so that the living may feast. And all things are obedient to money.
20 Non dir male del re, non pur nel tuo pensiero; e non dir male del ricco nella camera dove tu giaci; perciocchè alcun uccello del cielo potrebbe portarne la voce, ed alcun animale alato rapportarne le parole	20 You should not slander the king, even in your thoughts, and you should not speak evil of a wealthy man, even in your private chamber. For even the birds of the air will carry your voice, and whatever has wings will announce your opinion.
