1 E SOFAR Naamatita rispose e disse:	1 But Zophar the Naamathite, responding, said:
2 Non risponderebbesi egli ad un uomo di tante parole? Ed un uomo loquace sarebbe egli per ciò reputato giusto?	2 Will he who speaks much, not also listen? Or will a talkative man be justified?
3 Faranno le tue ciancie tacer gli uomini? Ti farai tu beffe, senza che alcuno ti faccia vergogna?	3 Will men be silent only for you? And when you have mocked others, will no one refute you?
4 Or tu hai detto: La mia maniera di vita è pura, Ed io sono stato netto davanti agli occhi tuoi.	4 For you said: “My word is pure, and I am clean in your sight.”
5 Ma volesse pure Iddio parlare, Ed aprir le sue labbra teco;	5 Yet I wish that God would speak with you, and would open his lips to you,
6 E dichiararti i segreti della sapienza; Perciocchè sono doppi; E tu conosceresti che Iddio ti fa portar pena minore Che la tua iniquità non merita di ragione	6 so that he might reveal to you the secrets of wisdom, and how intricate his law is, and that you would understand how much less he requires of you than your iniquity deserves.
7 Potresti tu trovar modo d’investigare Iddio? Potresti tu trovar l’Onnipotente in perfezione?	7 By chance, will you comprehend the footsteps of God and reach all the way to the perfection of the Almighty?
8 Queste cose sono le altezze de’ cieli, che ci faresti? Son più profonde che l’inferno, come le conosceresti?	8 He is higher than heaven, and what will you do? He is deeper than hell, but how will you know?
9 La lor distesa è più lunga che la terra, E la lor larghezza è più grande che il mare.	9 His measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.
10 Se Iddio sovverte, ovvero s’egli serra, E raccoglie, chi ne lo storrà?	10 If he overturns all things, or packs them together, who will contradict him?
11 Perciocchè egli conosce gli uomini vani; E veggendo l’iniquità, non vi porrebbe egli mente?	11 For he knows the vanity of men, and when he sees iniquity, does he not evaluate it?
12 Ma l’uomo è scemo di senno, e temerario di cuore; E nasce simile a un puledro di un asino salvatico	12 A vain man is lifted up in arrogance, and he thinks that he is born free like a wild ass’s colt.
13 Se tu addirizzi il cuor tuo, E spieghi le palme delle tue mani a lui;	13 But you have fortified your heart and extended your hands to him.
14 Se vi è iniquità nella tua mano, e tu l’allontani da te, E non lasci dimorare alcuna perversità ne’ tuoi tabernacoli;	14 If you would send away from you the iniquity that is in your hand, and not let injustice remain in your tabernacle,
15 Allora certamente tu alzerai la faccia netta di macchia, E sarai stabilito, e non avrai paura di nulla;	15 then you would be able to lift up your face without blemish, and you would be steadfast and unafraid.
16 Perciocchè tu dimenticherai gli affanni, E te ne ricorderai come d’acque trascorse;	16 Misery, likewise, you would forget, or would remember only like waters that have passed by.
17 E ti si leverà un tempo più chiaro che il mezzodì; Tu risplenderai, tu sarai simile alla mattina;	17 And brightness, like that of midday, will rise upon you until evening, and when you would think yourself consumed, you will rise up like the morning star.
18 E sarai in sicurtà; perciocchè vi sarà che sperare; E pianterai il tuo padiglione, e giacerai sicuramente;	18 And, when hope has been set before you, you will have faith, and, when buried, you will sleep secure.
19 E ti coricherai, e niuno ti spaventerà; E molti ti supplicheranno.	19 You will rest, and there will be nothing to make you afraid, and many will make requests before your face.
20 Ma gli occhi degli empi verranno meno, Ed ogni rifugio sarà perduto per loro; E la loro unica speranza sarà di render lo spirito	20 But the eyes of the impious will fade away, and the path to escape will perish before them, for the abomination of the soul is their hope.
