1 Mucho tiempo después, al tercer año, la palabra del Señor llegó a Elías, en estos términos: «Ve a presentarte a Ajab, y yo enviaré lluvia a la superficie del suelo».	1 After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go and show yourself to Ahab, so that I may grant rain upon the face of the earth.”
2 Entonces Elías partió para presentarse ante Ajab. Como apretaba el hambre en Samaría,	2 Therefore, Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. For there was a severe famine in Samaria.
3 Ajab llamó a Abdías, el mayordomo de palacio. –Abdías era muy temeroso del Señor,	3 And Ahab called Obadiah, the manager of his household. Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly.
4 y cuando Jezabel perseguía a muerte a los profetas del Señor, él había recogido a cien de ellos, los había ocultado en dos cuevas, cincuenta en cada una, y los había provisto de pan y agua–.	4 For when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord, he took one hundred prophets, and concealed them, fifty and fifty, in caves. And he fed them with bread and water.
5 Ajab dijo a Abdías: «Vamos a recorrer todos los manantiales y torrentes del país. Tal vez encontremos pasto para conservar con vida los caballos y las mulas, y así no tendremos que sacrificar ganado».	5 Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go into the land, to all fountains of water, and to all the valleys, for perhaps we will be able to find plants, and save the horses and mules, so that the beasts of burden may not perish entirely.”
6 Se repartieron el país para recorrerlo: Ajab partió solo por un camino y Abdías, también solo, se fue por otro.	6 And they divided the regions among themselves, so that they might travel through them. Ahab went one way alone, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
7 Mientras Abdías iba por el camino, le salió al encuentro Elías. Apenas lo reconoció, cayó con el rostro en tierra y dijo: «¿Eres tú, Elías, mi señor?».	7 And while Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him. And when he had recognized him, he fell on his face, and he said, “Are you not my lord Elijah?”
8 «Soy yo, le respondió él. Ve a decirle a tu señor que Elías está aquí».	8 And he responded to him: “I am. Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.”
9 Pero él replicó: «¿Qué pecado he cometido para que pongas a tu servidor en manos de Ajab y él me haga morir?	9 And he said: “How have I sinned that you would deliver me, your servant, into the hand of Ahab, so that he would put me to death?
10 ¡Por la vida del Señor, tu Dios!, no hay nación ni reino adonde mi señor Ajab no te haga mandado buscar. Y cuando decían: No está aquí, él hacía jurar a ese reino y a esa nación que no te habían encontrado.	10 As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom to which my lord has not sent, seeking you. And when all responded, ‘He is not here,’ he swore each kingdom and nation to an oath, because you were not found at all.
11 Y ahora tú dices: «Ve a decirle a tu señor que aquí está Elías».	11 And now, you say to me, ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.’
12 Pero en cuanto yo me aparte de ti, el espíritu del Señor te llevará quién sabe adónde, y cuando vaya a avisarle a Ajab, él no te encontrará y me matará. Sin embargo, tu servidor teme al Señor desde su juventud.	12 And when I will have departed from you, the Spirit of the Lord will transport you to a place that I do not know. And entering, I will report to Ahab. And he, not finding you, will put me to death. Yet your servant has feared the Lord from his infancy.
13 ¿Acaso no te han contado lo que hice cuando Jezabel mataba a los profetas del Señor, cómo oculté a cien de ellos en dos cuevas, cincuenta en cada una, y los proveí de pan y agua?	13 Has it not been revealed to you, my lord, what I did when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord: how I hid one hundred men from the prophets of the Lord, fifty and fifty, in caves, and how I fed them with bread and water?
14 Y ahora tú me dices: «Ve a decirle a tu señor que aquí está Elías». ¡Seguro que me matará!».	14 And now you say: ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here,’ so that he may kill me!”
15 Pero Elías replicó: «¡Por la vida del Señor de los ejércitos, a quien yo sirvo! Hoy mismo me presentaré a él».	15 And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whose face I stand, this day I will appear to him.”
16 Abdías fue al encuentro de Ajab; le comunicó el mensaje, y Ajab fue a encontrarse con Elías.	16 Therefore, Obadiah went away to meet Ahab, and he reported to him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17 Apenas vio a Elías, Ajab le dijo: «¿Así que eres tú, el que trae la desgracia a Israel?».	17 And when he had seen him, he said, “Are you the one who is disturbing Israel?”
18 Elías respondió: «No soy yo el que traigo la desgracia a Israel, sino tú y la casa de tu padre, porque han abandonado al Señor y te has ido detrás de los Baales.	18 And he said: “I have not troubled Israel. But it is you, and the house of your father, who have abandoned the commandments of the Lord, and have followed the Baals.
19 Y ahora, manda que todo Israel se reúna junto a mí en el monte Carmelo, con los cuatrocientos profetas de Baal y los cuatrocientos profetas de Aserá que comen a la mesa de Jezabel».	19 Yet truly now, send and gather to me all of Israel, on Mount Carmel, with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of the sacred groves, who eat from the table of Jezebel.”
20 Ajab mandó buscar a todos los israelitas y reunió a los profetas sobre el monte Carmelo.	20 Ahab sent to all the sons of Israel, and he gathered together the prophets on mount Carmel.
21 Elías se acercó a todo el pueblo y dijo: «¿Hasta cuándo van a andar rengueando de las dos piernas? Si el Señor es Dios, síganlo; si es Baal, síganlo a él. Pero el pueblo no le respondió ni una palabra.	21 Then Elijah, drawing near to all the people, said: “How long will you waver between two sides? If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal is, then follow him.” And the people did not respond a word to him.
22 Luego Elías dijo al pueblo: «Como profeta del Señor, he quedado yo solo, mientras que los profetas de Baal son cuatrocientos cincuenta.	22 And Elijah said again to the people: “I alone remain as a prophet of the Lord. But the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men.
23 Traigamos dos novillos; que ellos se elijan uno, que lo despedacen y lo pongan sobre la leña, pero sin prender fuego. Yo haré lo mismo con el otro novillo: lo pondré sobre la leña y tampoco prenderé fuego.	23 Let two oxen be given to us. And let them choose one ox for themselves, and, cutting it into pieces, let them set it on the wood. But they may not place fire under it. And I will prepare the other ox, and set it on the wood. But I will not place fire under it.
24 Ustedes invocarán el nombre de su dios y yo invocaré el nombre del Señor: el dios que responda enviándome fuego, ese es Dios». Todo el pueblo respondió diciendo: «¡Está bien!».	24 Call upon the names of your gods. And I will call on the name of my Lord. And the God who will have heeded with fire, let him be God.” And in response, all the people said, “Excellent proposition.”
25 Elías dijo a los profetas de Baal: «Elíjanse un novillo y prepárenlo ustedes primero, ya que son los más numerosos; luego invoquen el nombre de su dios, pero no prendan fuego».	25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal: “Choose for yourselves one ox, and prepare it first. For you are many. And call on the names of your gods, but do not place fire under it.”
26 Ellos tomaron el novillo que se les había dado, lo prepararon e invocaron el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, diciendo: «¡Respóndenos, Baal!». Pero no se oyó ninguna voz ni nadie que respondiera. Mientras tanto, danzaban junto al altar que habían hecho.	26 And when they had taken an ox, which he had given to them, they prepared it. And they called on the name of Baal, from morning even until midday, saying, “O Baal, heed us.” And there was no voice, nor did anyone respond. And so they leaped upon the altar that they had made.
27 Al mediodía, Elías empezó a burlarse de ellos, diciendo: «¡Griten bien fuerte, porque es un dios! Pero estará ocupado, o ausente, o se habrá ido de viaje. A lo mejor está dormido y se despierta».	27 And when it was now midday, Elijah ridiculed them, saying: “Cry out with a louder voice. For he is a god, and perhaps he is talking, or at an inn, or on a journey, or certainly he may be asleep, and must be awakened.”
28 Ellos gritaron a voz en cuello y, según su costumbre, se hacían incisiones con cuchillos y punzones, hasta chorrear sangre.	28 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and they cut themselves, in accord with their ritual, with knives and lancets, until they were entirely covered in blood.
29 Y una vez pasado el mediodía, se entregaron al delirio profético hasta la hora en que se ofrece la oblación. Pero no se oyó ninguna voz, ni hubo nadie que respondiera o prestara atención.	29 Then, after midday had passed, and they were prophesying, the time had arrived when the sacrifice is usually offered. And there was no voice heard, neither did anyone heed or respond to the praying.
30 Entonces Elías dijo a todo el pueblo: «¡Acérquense a mí!». Todo el pueblo se acercó a él, y él restauró el altar del Señor que había sido demolido:	30 Elijah said to all the people, “Draw near to me.” And as the people were drawing near to him, he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.
31 tomó doce piedras, conforme al número de los hijos de Jacob, a quien el Señor había dirigido su palabra, diciéndole: «Te llamarás Israel»,	31 And he took twelve stones, in accord with the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”
32 y con esas piedras erigió un altar al nombre del Señor. Alrededor del altar hizo una zanja, como un surco para dos medidas de semilla.	32 And he built from the stones an altar to the name of the Lord. And he made a trench for water, like two furrows of plowed land, all around the altar.
33 Luego dispuso la leña, despedazó el novillo y lo colocó sobre la leña.	33 And he arranged the wood, and he cut the ox into pieces, and he placed it on the wood.
34 Después dijo: «Llenen de agua cuatro cántaros y derrámenla sobre el holocausto y sobre la leña». Así lo hicieron. El añadió: «Otra vez». Lo hicieron por segunda vez, y él insistió: «Una vez más». Lo hicieron por tercera vez.	34 And he said, “Fill four containers with water, and pour it over the holocaust, and over the wood.” And again, he said, “Do this a second time.” And when they had done it a second time, he said, “Do it also a third time.” And they did so a third time.
35 El agua corrió alrededor del altar, y hasta la zanja se llenó de agua.	35 And the water was running down around the altar, and the pit of the trench was filled with water.
36 A la hora en que se ofrece la oblación, el profeta Elías se adelantó y dijo: «¡Señor, Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Israel! Que hoy se sepa que tú eres Dios en Israel, que yo soy tu servidor y que por orden tuya hice todas estas cosas.	36 And when it was now time for the holocaust to be offered, the prophet Elijah, drawing near, said: “O Lord, God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Israel, reveal this day that you are the God of Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have acted, in all these things, in accord with your precept.
37 Respóndeme, Señor, respóndeme, para que este pueblo reconozca que tú, Señor, eres Dios, y que eres tú el que les ha cambiado el corazón».	37 Heed me, O Lord, heed me, so that this people may learn that you are the Lord God, and that you have converted their heart again.”
38 Entonces cayó el fuego del Señor: Abrazó el holocausto, la leña, las piedras y la tierra, y secó el agua de la zanja.	38 Then the fire of the Lord fell down and devoured the holocaust, and the wood, and the stones, and even the dust, and it absorbed the water that was in the trench.
39 Al ver esto, todo el pueblo cayó con el rostro en tierra y dijo: «¡El Señor es Dios! ¡El Señor es Dios!».	39 And when all the people had seen it, they fell upon their face, and they said: “The Lord himself is God! The Lord himself is God!”
40 Elías les dijo: «¡Agarren a los profetas de Baal! ¡Que no escape ninguno!». Ellos los agarraron: Elías los hizo bajar al torrente Quisón y allí los degolló.	40 And Elijah said to them, “Apprehend the prophets of Baal, and do not let even one of them escape.” And when they had apprehended them, Elijah led them down to the torrent Kishon, and he put them to death there.
41 Elías dijo a Ajab: «Sube a comer y a beber, porque ya se percibe el ruido de la lluvia».	41 And Elijah said to Ahab “Ascend; eat and drink. For there is the sound of an abundance of rain.”
42 Ajab subió a comer y a beber, mientras Elías subía a la cumbre del Carmelo. Allí se postró en tierra, con el rostro entre las rodillas.	42 Ahab ascended, so that he might eat and drink. But Elijah ascended to the top of Carmel, and bending down to the ground, he placed his face between his knees.
43 Y dijo a su servidor: «Sube y mira hacia el mar». El subió, miró y dijo: «No hay nada». Elías añadió: «Vuelve a hacerlo siete veces».	43 And he said to his servant, “Ascend, and gaze out toward the sea.” And when he had ascended, and had contemplated, he said, “There is nothing.” And again, he said to him, “Return seven times.”
44 La séptima vez, el servidor dijo: «Se eleva del mar una nube, pequeña como la palma de una mano». Elías dijo: «Ve a decir a Ajab: Engancha el carro y baja, para que la lluvia no te lo impida».	44 And at the seventh time, behold, a little cloud ascended from the sea like the footstep of a man. And he said: “Ascend, and say to Ahab, ‘Yoke your chariot, and descend; otherwise, the rain may prevent you.’ ”
45 El cielo se oscureció cada vez más por las nubes y el viento, y empezó a llover copiosamente. Ajab subió a su carro y partió para Izreel.	45 And as he was turning himself this way and that, behold, the heavens were darkened, and there were clouds and wind, and a great rainstorm occurred. And so Ahab, going up, went away to Jezreel.
46 La mano del Señor se posó sobre Elías; él se ató el cinturón y corrió delante de Ajab hasta la entrada de Izreel.	46 And the hand of the Lord was upon Elijah. And cinching his waist, he ran before Ahab, until he arrived at Jezreel.
