So Achish said to David, "You realize, of course, that you and your men must go out on campaign with me to Jezreel." |

Now you shall learn what your servant can do." Then Achish said to David, "I shall appoint you my permanent bodyguard." |
| 3 Or Samuel était mort; tout Israël l'avait pleuré, et il avait été enterré dans la ville de Ramatha, où il était né. Et Saül avait chassé les magiciens et les devins de son royaume. | 3 Now Samuel had died and, after being mourned by all Israel, was buried in his city, Ramah. Meanwhile Saul had driven mediums and fortune-tellers out of the land. |
| 4 Les Philistins s'étant donc assemblés, vinrent camper à Sunam. Saül, de son côté, assembla toutes les troupes d'Israël, et vint à Gelboé. | 4 The Philistine levies advanced to Shunem and encamped. Saul, too, mustered all Israel; they camped on Gilboa. |
| 5 Et ayant vu l'armée des Philistins, il fut frappé de crainte, et l'angoisse le saisit jusqu'au fond du coeur. | 5 When Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was dismayed and lost heart completely. |
| 6 Il consulta le Seigneur; mais le Seigneur ne lui répondit ni par les songes, ni par les prêtres, ni par les prophètes. | 6 He therefore consulted the LORD; but the LORD gave no answer, whether in dreams or by the Urim or through prophets. |
| 7 Alors Saül dit à ses officiers: Cherchez-moi une femme qui ait un esprit de python; j'irai la trouver, et je saurai par elle ce qui doit nous arriver. Ses serviteurs lui dirent: Il y a à Endor une femme qui a l'esprit de python. | 7 Then Saul said to his servants, "Find me a woman who is a medium, to whom I can go to seek counsel through her." His servants answered him, "There is a woman in Endor who is a medium." |
| 8 Saül se déguisa donc, prit d'autres vêtements, et s'en alla accompagné de deux hommes seulement. Ils vinrent la nuit chez cette femme, et il lui dit: Découvrez-moi l'avenir par l'esprit de python, et évoquez-moi celui que je vous dirai. | 8 So he disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and set out with two companions. They came to the woman by night, and Saul said to her, "Tell my fortune through a ghost; conjure up for me the one I ask you to." |
| 9 Cette femme lui répondit: Vous savez tout ce qu'a fait Saül, et comment il a exterminé les magiciens et les devins de tout le pays; pourquoi donc me dressez-vous un piège pour me faire mourir. | 9 But the woman answered him, "You are surely aware of what Saul has done, in driving the mediums and fortune-tellers out of the land. Why, then, are you laying snares for my life, to have me killed?" |
| 10 Saül lui jura par le Seigneur, et lui dit: Vive le Seigneur, il ne vous arrivera aucun mal pour cela. | 10 But Saul swore to her by the LORD, "As the LORD lives, you shall incur no blame for this." |
| 11 La femme lui dit: Qui voulez-vous que je vous évoque? Il lui répondit: Faites-moi venir Samuel. | 11 Then the woman asked him, "Whom do you want me to conjure up?" and he answered, "Samuel." |
| 12 La femme ayant vu paraître Samuel, jeta un grand cri, et dit à Saül: Pourquoi m'avez-vous trompée? Car vous êtes Saül. | 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she shrieked at the top of her voice and said to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!" |
| 13 Le roi lui dit: Ne craignez pas; qu'avez-vous vu? J'ai vu, lui dit-elle, un Dieu qui sortait de la terre. | 13 But the king said to her, "Have no fear. What do you see?" The woman answered Saul, "I see a preternatural being rising from the earth." |
| 14 Saül lui dit: Comment est-il fait? C'est, dit-elle, un vieillard couvert d'un manteau. Saül reconnut que c'était Samuel, et il s'inclina le visage contre terre et se prosterna. | 14 "What does he look like?" asked Saul. And she replied, "It is an old man who is rising, clothed in a mantle." Saul knew that it was Samuel, and so he bowed face to the ground in homage. |
| 15 Samuel dit à Saül: Pourquoi m'avez-vous troublé, en me faisant venir ici? Saül lui répondit: Je suis dans une grande détresse; car les Philistins me font la guerre, et Dieu s'est retiré de moi. Il n'a pas voulu me répondre, ni par les prophètes, ni par les songes; c'est pourquoi je vous ai fait venir, afin que vous m'appreniez ce que je dois faire. | 15 Samuel then said to Saul, "Why do you disturb me by conjuring me up?" Saul replied: "I am in great straits, for the Philistines are waging war against me and God has abandoned me. Since he no longer answers me through prophets or in dreams, I have called you to tell me what I should do." |
| 16 Samuel lui dit: Pourquoi vous adressez-vous à moi, puisque le Seigneur vous a abandonné, et qu'Il est passé vers votre rival? | 16 To this Samuel said: "But why do you ask me, if the LORD has abandoned you and is with your neighbor? |
| 17 Car le Seigneur vous traitera comme je vous l'ai dit de Sa part; Il déchirera votre royaume d'entre vos mains, pour le donner à un autre, à David, | 17 The LORD has done to you what he foretold through me: he has torn the kingdom from your grasp and has given it to your neighbor David. |
| 18 parce que vous n'avez pas obéi à la voix du Seigneur, et que vous n'avez pas exécuté l'arrêt de Sa colère contre Amalec: C'est pour cela que le Seigneur vous envoie aujourd'hui ce que vous souffrez. | 18 "Because you disobeyed the LORD'S directive and would not carry out his fierce anger against Amalek, the LORD has done this to you today. |
| 19 Le Seigneur livrera aussi Israël avec vous entre les mains des Philistins; demain vous serez avec moi, vous et vos fils; et le Seigneur abandonnera aux Philistins le camp même d'Israël. | 19 Moreover, the LORD will deliver Israel, and you as well, into the clutches of the Philistines. By tomorrow you and your sons will be with me, and the LORD will have delivered the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines." |
| 20 Saül tomba aussitôt, et demeura étendu à terre; car les paroles de Samuel l'avaient épouvanté, et les forces lui manquaient, parce qu'il n'avait pas mangé de tout ce jour-là. | 20 Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, for he was badly shaken by Samuel's message. Moreover, he had no bodily strength left, since he had eaten nothing all that day and night. |
| 21 La magicienne s'approcha de Saül qui était très effrayé, et elle lui dit: Vous voyez que votre servante vous a obéi, que j'ai exposé ma vie pour vous, et que je me suis rendue à ce que vous avez désiré de moi. | 21 Then the woman came to Saul, and seeing that he was quite terror-stricken, said to him: "Remember, your maidservant obeyed you: I took my life in my hands and fulfilled the request you made of me. |
| 22 Ecoutez donc aussi maintenant votre servante, et souffrez que je vous serve un peu de pain, afin qu'ayant mangé vous repreniez vos forces, et que vous puissiez vous mettre en chemin. | 22 Now you, in turn, please listen to your maidservant. Let me set something before you to eat, so that you may have strength when you go on your way." |
| 23 Il refusa, et dit: Je ne mangerai pas. Mais ses serviteurs et cette femme le contraignirent de manger; et s'étant enfin rendu à leurs prières, il se leva de terre, et s'assit sur le lit. | 23 But he refused, saying, "I will not eat." However, when his servants joined the woman in urging him, he listened to their entreaties, got up from the ground, and sat on a couch. |
| 24 Or cette femme avait dans sa maison un veau gras, qu'elle alla tuer aussitôt; elle prit de la farine, la pétrit, et elle en fit des pains sans levain, | 24 The woman had a stall-fed calf in the house, which she now quickly slaughtered. Then taking flour, she kneaded it and baked unleavened bread. |
| 25 qu'elle servit devant Saül et ses serviteurs. Après qu'ils eurent mangé, ils s'en allèrent et marchèrent toute la nuit. | 25 She set the meal before Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they stood up and left the same night. |
