| 1 Et Samuel dit à Saül : Le Seigneur m'a envoyé pour vous oindre roi sur Son peuple Israël. Ecoutez donc maintenant ce que dit le Seigneur. | 1 And Samuel said to Saul: The Lord sent me to anoint thee king over his People Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the Lord: |
| 2 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées : Je Me suis souvenu de tout ce que Amalec a fait à Israël, et de la manière dont il s'opposa à lui dans son chemin lorsqu'il sortait d'Egypte. | 2 Thus saith the Lord of hosts: I have reckoned up all that Amalec hath done to Israel: I how he opposed them in the way when they came up out of Egypt. |
| 3 C'est pourquoi allez, et frappez Amalec, et détruisez tout ce qui est à lui. Ne l'épargnez pas, et ne désirez rien de ce qui lui appartient; mais tuez tout, depuis l'homme jusqu'à la femme, jusqu'aux petits enfants, aux nourrissons, jusqu'aux boeufs, aux brebis, aux chameaux et aux ânes. | 3 Now therefore go, and smite Amalec, and utterly destroy all that he hath: spare him not, nor covet any thing that is his: but slay both man and woman, child and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. |
| 4 Saül convoqua donc le peuple, et il en fit la revue comme s'ils en avaient été des agneaux; il y avait deux cent mille hommes de pied, et dix mille hommes de Juda. | 4 So Saul commanded the people, and numbered them as lambs: two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand of the men of Juda. |
| 5 Il marcha ensuite jusqu'à la ville d'Amalec et dressa des embuscades dans le torrent. | 5 And when Saul was come to the city of Amalec, he laid ambushes in the torrent. |
| 6 Et il dit aux Cinéens: Allez, retirez-vous, séparez-vous des Amalécites, de peur que je ne vous enveloppe avec eux. Car vous avez usé de miséricorde envers tous les enfants d'Israël lorsqu'ils venaient d'Egypte. Les Cinéens se retirèrent donc du milieu des Amalécites. | 6 And Saul said to the Cinite: Go, depart and get ye down from Amalec: lest I destroy thee with him. For thou hast shewn kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. And the Cinite departed from the midst of Amalec. |
| 7 Et Saül tailla en pièces les Amalécites, depuis Hévila jusqu'à Sur, qui est vis-à-vis de l'Egypte. | 7 And Saul smote Amalec from Hevila, until thou comest to Sur, which is over against Egypt. |
| 8 Et il prit vivant Agag, roi des Amalécites, et fit passer tout le peuple au fil de l'épée. | 8 And he took Agag the king of Amalec alive: but all the common people he slew with the edge of the sword. |
| 9 Mais Saül et le peuple épargnèrent Agag, et ce qu'il y avait de meilleur dans les troupeaux de brebis et de boeufs, dans les béliers, dans les vêtements, habits, et tout ce qui était beau, et ils ne voulurent point le perdre; mais ils détruisirent tout ce qui se trouva de vil et de méprisable. | 9 And Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the flocks of sheep and of the herds, and the garments and the rams, and all that was beautiful, and would not destroy them: but every thing that was vile and good for nothing, that they destroyed. |
| 10 Le Seigneur adressa alors la parole à Samuel, et lui dit: | 10 And the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying: |
| 11 Je me repens d'avoir fait Saül roi, parce qu'il M'a abandonné, et qu'il n'a point exécuté Mes ordres. Samuel en fut attristé, et il cria au Seigneur toute la nuit. | 11 It repenteth me that I have made Saul king: for he hath forsaken me, and hath not executed my commandments. And Samuel was grieved, and he cried unto the Lord all night. |
| 12 Et comme il s'était levé avant le jour pour aller trouver Saül au matin, on vint lui dire que Saül était venu à Carmel, où il s'était dressé un arc de triomphe, et qu'au sortir de là il était descendu à Galgala. Samuel vint donc trouver Saül, qui offrait au Seigneur un holocauste des prémices du butin qu'il avait amené d'Amalec. | 12 And when Samuel rose early, to go to Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, that Saul was come to Carmel, and had erected for himself a triumphant arch, and returning had passed on, and gone down to Galgal. And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul was offering a holocaust to the Lord out of the choicest of the spoils which he had brought from Amalec. |
| 13 Samuel s'étant approché de Saül, Saül lui dit: Soyez béni du Seigneur. J'ai accompli la parole du Seigneur. | 13 And when Samuel was come to Saul, Saul said to him: Blessed be thou of the Lord, I have fulfilled the word of the Lord. |
| 14 Samuel lui dit : D'où vient donc ce bruit des troupeaux de brebis et de boeufs que j'entends, et qui retentit à mes oreilles? | 14 And Samuel said: What meaneth then this bleating of the flocks, which soundeth in my ears, and the lowing of the herds, which I hear? |
| 15 Saül lui dit : On les a amenés d'Amalec; car le peuple a épargné ce qu'il y avait de meilleur parmi les brebis et les boeufs, pour les immoler au Seigneur votre Dieu; et nous avons tué tout le reste. | 15 And Saul said: They have brought them from Amalec: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the herds that they might be sacrificed to the Lord thy God, but the rest we have slain. |
| 16 Samuel dit à Saül : Laissez-moi, et je vous indiquerai ce que le Seigneur m'a dit cette nuit. Et Saül lui dit: Parlez. | 16 And Samuel said to Saul: Suffer me, and I will tell thee what the Lord hath said to me this night. And he said to him: Speak. |
| 17 Samuel ajouta: Lorsque vous étiez petit à vos yeux, n'êtes-vous pas devenu le chef de toutes les tribus d'Israël? Et le Seigneur vous a oint roi sur Israël; | 17 And Samuel said: When thou wast a little one in thy own eyes, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel? And the Lord anointed thee to be king over Israel. |
| 18 et Il vous a envoyé à cette guerre, et Il vous a dit: Allez, et massacrez ces pécheurs d'Amalec; combattez contre eux jusqu'à ce que vous ayez tout tué. | 18 And the Lord sent thee on the way, and said: Go, and kill the sinners of Amalec, and thou shalt fight against them until thou hast utterly destroyed them. |
| 19 Pourquoi donc n'avez-vous pas écouté la voix du Seigneur? Pourquoi vous êtes-vous jeté sur le butin, et avez-vous fait ce qui est mal aux yeux du Seigneur? | 19 Why then didst thou not hearken to the voice of the Lord: but hast turned to the prey, and hast done evil in the eyes of the Lord. |
| 20 Et Saül dit à Samuel: Au contraire, j'ai écouté la voix du Seigneur et j'ai suivi la voie par laquelle Il m'avait envoyé: j'ai amené Agag, roi d'Amalec, et j'ai tué les Amalécites. | 20 And Saul said to Samuel: Yea I have hearkened to the voice of the Lord, and have walked in the way by which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalec, and Amalec I have slain. |
| 21 Mais le peuple a pris sur le butin des brebis et des boeufs, comme prémices de ce qui a été tué, pour les immoler au Seigneur son Dieu à Galgala. | 21 But the people took of the spoils sheep and oxen, as the firstfruits of those things that were slain, to offer sacrifice to the Lord their God in Galgal. |
| 22 Samuel lui répondit: Le Seigneur demande-t-Il des holocaustes et des victimes, et ne veut-Il pas plutôt que l'on obéisse à Sa voix? Car l'obéissance est meilleure que les victimes, et il vaut mieux écouter Sa voix, que de Lui offrir la graisse des béliers. | 22 And Samuel said: Doth the Lord desire holocausts and victims, and not rather that the voice of the Lord should be obeyed? For obedience is better than sacrifices: and to hearken rather than to offer the fat of rams. |
| 23 Car la désobéissance est un péché aussi grave que la magie, et ne se rendre pas à Sa volonté, c'est comme le crime d'idolâtrie. Puis donc que vous avez rejeté la parole du Seigneur, le Seigneur vous a rejeté, afin que vous ne soyez plus roi. | 23 Because it is like the sin of witchcraft, to rebel: and like the crime of idolatry, to refuse to obey. Forasmuch therefore as thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord hath also rejected thee from being king. |
| 24 Et Saül dit à Samuel: J'ai péché, parce que j'ai agi contre la parole du Seigneur, et contre vos ordres; je craignais le peuple, et j'ai écouté sa voix. | 24 And Saul said to Samuel: I have sinned because I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy words, fearing the people, and obeying their voice. |
| 25 Mais portez, je vous prie, mon péché, et venez avec moi, afin que j'adore le Seigneur. | 25 But now bear, I beseech thee, my sin, and return with me, that I may adore the Lord. |
| 26 Samuel répondit à Saül: Je n'irai point avec vous, parce que vous avez rejeté la parole du Seigneur, et que le Seigneur vous a rejeté, et ne veut plus que vous soyez roi d'Israël. | 26 And Samuel said to Saul: I will not return with thee, because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. |
| 27 En même temps Samuel se retourna pour s'en aller; mais Saül le prit par le coin de son manteau, qui se déchira. | 27 And Samuel turned about to go away: but he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. |
| 28 Alors Samuel lui dit: Le Seigneur a déchiré aujourd'hui le royaume d'Israël, et vous l'a arraché des mains pour le donner à un autre, qui vaut mieux que vous. | 28 And Samuel said to him: The Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to thy neighbour who is better than thee. |
| 29 Celui qui triomphe dans Israël ne pardonnera point, et Il ne Se repentira pas de ce qu'Il a fait; car Il n'est point un homme pour Se repentir. | 29 But the triumpher in Israel will riot spare, and will not be moved to repentance: for he is not a mail that he should repent. |
| 30 Saül lui dit: J'ai péché; mais honorez-moi maintenant devant les anciens de mon peuple et devant Israël; et revenez avec moi, afin que j'adore le Seigneur votre Dieu. | 30 Then he said: I have sinned: yet honour me now before the ancients of my people, and before Israel, and return with me, that I may adore the Lord thy God. |
| 31 Samuel retourna donc, et suivit Saül, et Saül adora le Seigneur. | 31 So Samuel turned again after Saul: and Saul adored the Lord. |
| 32 Alors Samuel dit: Amenez-moi Agag, roi d'Amalec. Et on lui présenta Agag, qui était très gras, et tout tremblant. Et Agag dit: Faut-il qu'une mort amère me sépare ainsi de tout? | 32 And Samuel said: Bring hitherto me Agag the king of Amalec. And Agag was presented to him very fat, and trembling. And Agag said: Doth bitter death separate in this manner? |
| 33 Samuel lui dit: comme votre épée a ravi les enfants à tant de mères, ainsi votre mère parmi les femmes sera sans enfants. Et il le coupa en morceaux devant le Seigneur à Galgala. | 33 And Samuel said: As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed him in pieces before the Lord in Galgal. |
| 34 Samuel partit ensuite pour Ramatha, et Saül s'en alla dans sa maison à Gabaa. | 34 And Samuel departed to Ramatha: but Saul went up to his house in Gabaa. |
| 35 Et Samuel ne vit plus Saül jusqu'au jour de sa mort; mais il le pleurait sans cesse, parce que le Seigneur Se repentait de l'avoir établi roi sur Israël. | 35 And Samuel saw Saul no more till the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul, because the Lord repented that he had made him king over Israel. |
