| 2 Il avait deux femmes, dont l'une s'appelait Anne, et la seconde Phénenna. Phénenna avait des enfants et Anne n'en avait pas. | 2 He had two wives, one called Hannah, the other Peninnah; Peninnah had children but Hannah hadnone. |
| 3 Cet homme allait de sa ville à Silo aux jours ordonnés, pour adorer le Seigneur des armées, et pour Lui offrir des sacrifices. Les deux fils d'Héli, Ophni et Phinées, y faisaient la fonction de prêtres du Seigneur. | 3 Every year this man used to go up from his town to worship, and to sacrifice to Yahweh Sabaoth atShiloh. (The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there as priests of Yahweh.) |
| 4 Un jour donc Elcana, ayant offert son sacrifice, donna à Phénenna sa femme, et à tous ses fils et à toutes ses filles leur part de la victime. | 4 One day Elkanah offered a sacrifice. Now he used to give portions to Peninnah and to al her sons anddaughters; |
| 5 Il n'en donna qu'une à Anne, tout triste, parce qu'il l'aimait. Mais le Seigneur l'avait rendue stérile. | 5 to Hannah, however, he would give only one portion: for, although he loved Hannah more, Yahweh hadmade her barren. |
| 6 Phénenna, qui avait de la jalousie contre elle, l'affligeait aussi et la tourmentait extrêmement, jusqu'à l'insulter de ce que le Seigneur l'avait rendue stérile. | 6 Furthermore, her rival would taunt and provoke her, because Yahweh had made her womb barren. |
| 7 Elle la traitait ainsi tous les ans lorsque le temps était venu de monter au temple du Seigneur; et Anne se mettait à pleurer, et ne mangeait point. | 7 And this went on year after year; every time they went up to the temple of Yahweh she used to taunther. On that day she wept and would not eat anything; |
| 8 Elcana, son mari, lui dit donc: Anne, pourquoi pleurez-vous? Pourquoi ne mangez-vous pas et pourquoi votre coeur s'afflige-t-il? Ne suis-je pas pour vous plus que ne vous seraient dix enfants? | 8 so her husband Elkanah said, 'Hannah, why are you crying? Why are you not eating anything? Why areyou so sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?' |
| 9 Après donc qu'Anne eut mangé et bu à Silo, elle se leva, et tandis que le grand prêtre Héli était assis sur son siège devant la porte du temple du Seigneur, | 9 When they had finished eating in the room, Hannah got up and stood before Yahweh. Eli the priest wassitting on his seat by the doorpost of the temple of Yahweh. |
| 10 Anne, qui avait le coeur plein d'amertume, pria le Seigneur en répandant beaucoup de larmes, | 10 In the bitterness of her soul she prayed to Yahweh with many tears, |
| 11 et elle fit un voeu en ces termes: Seigneur des armées, si Vous daignez regarder l'affliction de Votre servante, si Vous Vous souvenez de moi, si Vous n'oubliez point Votre servante, et, si Vous donnez à Votre esclave un enfant mâle, je le donnerai à mon Seigneur pour tous les jours de sa vie, et le rasoir ne passera point sur sa tête. | 11 and she made this vow, 'Yahweh Sabaoth! Should you condescend to notice the humiliation of yourservant and keep her in mind instead of disregarding your servant, and give her a boy, I wil give him to Yahwehfor the whole of his life and no razor shal ever touch his head.' |
| 12 Comme Anne demeurait ainsi longtemps en prière devant le Seigneur, Héli jeta les yeux sur sa bouche. | 12 While she went on praying to Yahweh, Eli was watching her mouth, |
| 13 Or Anne parlait dans son coeur, et l'on voyait seulement remuer ses lèvres, sans qu'on entendît aucune parole. Héli crut qu'elle avait bu avec excès; | 13 for Hannah was speaking under her breath; her lips were moving but her voice could not be heard,and Eli thought that she was drunk. |
| 14 et il lui dit: Jusqu'à quand serez-vous ivre? Laissez un peu reposer le vin qui vous trouble. | 14 Eli said, 'How much longer are you going to stay drunk? Get rid of your wine.' |
| 15 Anne lui répondit: Pardonnez-moi, mon seigneur, je suis une femme comblée d'affliction; je n'ai bu ni vin, ni rien qui puisse enivrer; mais j'ai répandu mon âme en la présence du Seigneur. | 15 'No, my lord,' Hannah replied, 'I am a woman in great trouble; I have not been drinking wine or strongdrink -- I am pouring out my soul before Yahweh. |
| 16 Ne croyez pas que votre servante soit comme l'une des filles de Bélial; car il n'y a que l'excès de ma douleur et de mon affliction qui m'ait fait parler jusqu'à cet instant. | 16 Do not take your servant for a worthless woman; al this time I have been speaking from the depth ofmy grief and my resentment.' |
| 17 Alors Héli lui dit: Allez en paix; et que le Dieu d'Israël vous accorde la demande que vous Lui avez faite. | 17 Eli then replied, 'Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant what you have asked of him.' |
| 18 Anne lui répondit: Plaise à Dieu que votre servante trouve grâce devant vos yeux! Elle s'en alla ensuite, elle mangea, et elle ne changea plus de visage comme auparavant. | 18 To which she said, 'May your servant find favour in your sight.' With that, the woman went away; shebegan eating and was dejected no longer. |
| 19 S'étant ensuite levés dès le matin, ils adorèrent le Seigneur, s'en retournèrent et arrivèrent à leur maison à Ramatha. Or Elcana fut avec sa femme, et le Seigneur se souvint d'elle. | 19 They got up early in the morning and, after worshipping Yahweh, set out and went home to Ramah.Elkanah lay with his wife Hannah, and Yahweh remembered her. |
| 20 Quelque temps après elle conçut, et enfanta un fils, qu'elle appela Samuel, parce qu'elle l'avait demandé au Seigneur. | 20 Hannah conceived and, in due course, gave birth to a son, whom she named Samuel, 'since', shesaid, 'I asked Yahweh for him.' |
| 21 Elcana son mari vint ensuite avec toute sa maison, pour immoler au Seigneur la victime accoutumée, et pour Lui rendre son voeu. | 21 Elkanah, the husband, went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to Yahweh and to fulfilhis vow. |
| 22 Mais Anne n'y alla point, et elle dit à son mari: Je n'irai pas au sanctuaire jusqu'à ce que l'enfant soit sevré, et je le mènerai afin qu'il soit présenté au Seigneur, et qu'il demeure toujours devant Lui. | 22 However, Hannah did not go up, having said to her husband, 'Not before the child has been weaned.Then I shal bring him and present him before Yahweh and he will stay there for ever.' |
| 23 Elcana son mari lui dit: Faites ce qui vous semblera bon; et restez jusqu'à ce que vous ayez sevré l'enfant. Je prie le Seigneur d'accomplir Sa parole. Anne demeura donc, et elle nourrit son fils de son lait, jusqu'à ce qu'elle l'eut sevré. | 23 Elkanah her husband then said to her, 'Do what you think fit; wait until you have weaned him. MayYahweh bring about what he has said.' So the woman stayed behind and nursed her child until she weaned him. |
| 24 Et lorsqu'elle l'eut sevré, elle prit avec elle trois veaux, trois boisseaux de farine, et un vase plein de vin, et elle amena son fils à Silo dans la maison du Seigneur. Or l'enfant était encore tout petit. | 24 When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, as wel as a three-year-old bul , an ephah offlour and a skin of wine, and took him into the temple of Yahweh at Shiloh; the child was very young. |
| 25 Ils le présentèrent à Héli, après avoir immolé un veau. | 25 They sacrificed the bul and led the child to Eli. |
| 26 Et Anne lui dit: Je vous en prie, mon seigneur; aussi vrai que votre âme vit, je suis cette femme que vous avez vu ici prier le Seigneur. | 26 She said, 'If you please, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood beside you here,praying to Yahweh. |
| 27 Je Le suppliais pour cet enfant, et le Seigneur m'a accordé la demande que je Lui ai faite. | 27 This is the child for which I was praying, and Yahweh has granted me what I asked of him. |
| 28 C'est pourquoi je le Lui prête pour tous les jours où il sera prêté au Seigneur. Ils adorèrent donc le Seigneur en ce lieu, et Anne pria en ces termes: | 28 Now I make him over to Yahweh for the whole of his life. He is made over to Yahweh.' They thenworshipped Yahweh there. |
