Et de plus, considérez que je suis votre os et votre chair. | 2 "Say in the ears of all the citizens of Shechem, 'Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?' Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh." |
| 3 Les frères de sa mère parlèrent de lui en ces termes à tous les habitants de Sichem, dont ils inclinèrent les coeurs en faveur d'Abimélech, en disant: C'est notre frère. | 3 And his mother's kinsmen spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the men of Shechem; and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, "He is our brother." |
| 4 Et ils lui donnèrent soixante-dix sicles d'argent, qu'ils enlevèrent du temple de Baalberith. | 6 Alors tous les habitants de Sichem s'assemblèrent avec toutes les familles de la ville de Mello, et allèrent établir roi Abimélech près du chêne qui était à Sichem. | 6 And all the citizens of Shechem came together, and all Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem. |
| 7 Joatham, en ayant reçu la nouvelle, s'en alla au sommet du mont Garizim, où, se tenant debout, il cria à haute voix et dit: Ecoutez-moi, habitants de Sichem, comme vous voulez que Dieu vous écoute. | 7 When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and cried aloud and said to them, "Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you. |
| 8 Les arbres allèrent un jour pour s'élire un roi, et ils dirent à l'olivier: Sois notre roi. | 8 The trees once went forth to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive tree, 'Reign over us.' |
| 9 L'olivier leur répondit: Puis-je abandonner mon suc et mon huile dont les dieux et les hommes se servent, pour venir m'établir au-dessus des arbres? | 9 But the olive tree said to them, 'Shall I leave my fatness, by which gods and men are honored, and go to sway over the trees?' |
| 10 Les arbres dirent ensuite au figuier: Viens, et règne sur nous. | 10 And the trees said to the fig tree, 'Come you, and reign over us.' |
| 11 Le figuier leur répondit: Puis-je abandonner la douceur de mon suc et l'excellence de mon fruit, pour venir m'établir au-dessus des arbres? | 11 But the fig tree said to them, 'Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit, and go to sway over the trees?' |
| 12 Les arbres s'adressèrent aussi à la vigne, et lui dirent: Viens, et règne sur nous. | 12 And the trees said to the vine, 'Come you, and reign over us.' |
| 13 La vigne leur répondit: Puis-je abandonner mon vin, qui est la joie de Dieu et des hommes pour venir m'établir au-dessus des arbres? | 13 But the vine said to them, 'Shall I leave my wine which cheers gods and men, and go to sway over the trees?' |
| 14 Enfin tous les arbres vinrent au buisson: Viens, et règne sur nous. | 14 Then all the trees said to the bramble, 'Come you, and reign over us.' |
| 15 Le buisson leur répondit: Si vous m'établissez véritablement votre roi, venez vous reposer sous mon ombre; mais si vous ne le voulez pas, que le feu sorte du buisson, et qu'il dévore les cèdres du Liban. | 15 And the bramble said to the trees, 'If in good faith you are anointing me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, let fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon.' |
| 16 Considérez donc maintenant si ç'a été pour vous une action juste et innocente de proclamer roi Abimélech; si vous avez bien traité Jérobaal et sa maison; si vous avez reconnu, comme vous deviez, les grands services de celui qui a combattu pour vous, | 16 "Now therefore, if you acted in good faith and honor when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him as his deeds deserved-- |
| 17 et qui a exposé sa vie à tant de périls pour vous délivrer des mains des Madianites; | 17 for my father fought for you, and risked his life, and rescued you from the hand of Midian; |
| 18 et si vous auriez dû vous élever, comme vous l'avez fait, contre la maison de mon père, en tuant sur une même pierre ses soixante-dix fils, et en proclamant Abimélech, fils de sa servante, roi des habitants de Sichem, parce qu'il est votre frère. | 18 and you have risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, seventy men on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the citizens of Shechem, because he is your kinsman-- |
| 19 Si donc vous aviez traité comme vous deviez Jérobaal et sa maison, et que vous ne lui ayez point fait d'injustice, qu'Abimélech soit votre bonheur, et puissiez-vous être aussi le bonheur d'Abimélech. | 19 if you then have acted in good faith and honor with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you; |
| 20 Mais, si vous avez agi contre toute justice, que le feu sorte d'Abimélech, qu'il consume les habitants de Sichem et de la ville de Mello, et que le feu sorte des habitants de Sichem et de la ville de Mello, et qu'il dévore Abimélech. | 20 but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the citizens of Shechem, and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the citizens of Shechem, and from Beth-millo, and devour Abimelech." |
| 21 Ayant ainsi parlé, il s'enfuit et il s'en alla à Béra, où il demeura, parce qu'il craignait Abimélech, son frère. | 21 And Jotham ran away and fled, and went to Beer and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother. |
| 22 Abimélech fut donc prince d'Israël pendant trois ans. | 22 Abimelech ruled over Israel three years. |
| 23 Mais le Seigneur envoya un mauvais esprit entre Abimélech et les habitants de Sichem, qui commencèrent à le détester, | 23 And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech; |
| 24 et à imputer à Abimélech leur frère, et aux principaux des Sichimites qui l'avaient soutenu, le crime du meutre des soixante-dix fils de Jérobaal, et de la cruelle effusion de leur sang. | 24 that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and upon the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brothers. |
| 25 Ils lui dressèrent donc des embûches au haut des montagnes; et, en attendant qu'il vînt, ils s'exerçaient à des brigandages et volaient les passants. Mais Abimélech en fut averti. | 25 And the men of Shechem put men in ambush against him on the mountain tops, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way; and it was told Abimelech. |
| 26 Cependant Gaal, fils d'Obed, vint avec ses frères, et passa à Sichem; et les Sichimites, à son arrivée, ayant pris une nouvelle confiance, | 26 And Gaal the son of Ebed moved into Shechem with his kinsmen; and the men of Shechem put confidence in him. |
| 27 sortirent dans la campagne, ravagèrent les vignes, foulèrent aux pieds les raisins; et, dansant et chantant, ils entrèrent dans le temple de leur dieu, où, en mangeant et en buvant, ils faisaient des imprécations contre Abimélech; | 27 And they went out into the field, and gathered the grapes from their vineyards and trod them, and held festival, and went into the house of their god, and ate and drank and reviled Abimelech. |
| 28 et Gaal, fils d'Obed, criait à haute voix: Qui est Abimélech et qu'est Sichem, pour que nous servions Abimélech? N'est-ce pas le fils de Jérobaal? et n'a-t-il pas établi Zebul, son serviteur, pour gouverner sous lui les hommes de la maison d'Hémor, père de Sichem? Pourquoi donc serions-nous assujettis à Abimélech? | 28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, "Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem, that we should serve him? Did not the son of Jerubbaal and Zebul his officer serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem? Why then should we serve him? |
| 29 Plût à Dieu que quelqu'un me donnât l'autorité sur ce peuple pour exterminer Abimélech! Cependant on vint dire à Abimélech: Assemblez une grande armée, et venez. | 29 Would that this people were under my hand! then I would remove Abimelech. I would say to Abimelech, 'Increase your army, and come out.'" |
| 30 Zebul, gouverneur de la ville, ayant entendu ces discours de Gaal, fils d'Obed, entra dans une grande colère, | 30 When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled. |
| 31 et envoya en secret des courriers à Abimélech pour lui dire: Gaal, fils d'Obed, est venu à Sichem avec ses frères, et il excite la ville contre vous. | 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech at Arumah, saying, "Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his kinsmen have come to Shechem, and they are stirring up the city against you. |
| 32 Venez donc de nuit avec les troupes qui vous accompagnent, et tenez-vous caché dans les champs; | 32 Now therefore, go by night, you and the men that are with you, and lie in wait in the fields. |
| 33 et au point du jour, lorsque le soleil se lèvera, venez fondre sur la ville. Quand Gaal sortira contre vous avec ses gens, profitez de vos chances contre lui. | 33 Then in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, rise early and rush upon the city; and when he and the men that are with him come out against you, you may do to them as occasion offers." |
| 34 Abimélech, ayant donc marché la nuit avec toute son armée, dressa des embuscades en quatre endroits près de Sichem. | 34 And Abimelech and all the men that were with him rose up by night, and laid wait against Shechem in four companies. |
| 35 Gaal, fils d'Obed, sortit de la ville, et se tint à l'entrée de la porte, et Abimélech sortit de l'embuscade avec toute son armée. | 35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city; and Abimelech and the men that were with him rose from the ambush. |
| 36 Gaal, ayant aperçu les gens d'Abimélech, dit à Zebul: Voilà bien du monde qui descend des montagnes. Zebul lui répondit: Les ombres des montagnes que vous voyez vous paraissent des têtes d'hommes, et c'est là ce qui vous trompe. | 36 And when Gaal saw the men, he said to Zebul, "Look, men are coming down from the mountain tops!" And Zebul said to him, "You see the shadow of the mountains as if they were men." |
| 37 Gaal lui dit encore: Voilà un grand peuple qui sort du milieu de la terre, et j'en voie venir une colonne par le chemin qui regarde le chêne. | 37 Gaal spoke again and said, "Look, men are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming from the direction of the Diviners' Oak." |
| 38 Zebul lui répondit: Où est maintenant cette audace avec laquelle vous disiez: Qui est Abimélech pour nous tenir assujettis à lui? Ne sont-ce pas là les gens que vous méprisiez? Sortez donc et combattez contre eux. | 38 Then Zebul said to him, "Where is your mouth now, you who said, 'Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?' Are not these the men whom you despised? Go out now and fight with them." |
| 39 Gaal sortit alors à la vue de tout le peuple de Sichem, et combattit contre Abimélech. | 39 And Gaal went out at the head of the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech. |
| 40 Mais Abimélech le contraignit de fuir, le poursuivit et le chassa dans la ville; et plusieurs de ses gens furent tués jusqu'à la porte de Sichem. | 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him; and many fell wounded, up to the entrance of the gate. |
| 41 Abimélech se tint ensuite à Ruma, et Zebul chassa de la ville Gaal avec ses gens, et ne souffrit plus qu'il y demeurât. | 41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah; and Zebul drove out Gaal and his kinsmen, so that they could not live on at Shechem. |
| 42 Le lendemain le peuple de Sichem sortit dans les champs, et Abimélech, l'ayant appris, | 42 On the following day the men went out into the fields. And Abimelech was told. |
| 43 amena son armée, la divisa en trois bandes, et dressa des embuscades dans les champs. Lorsqu'il vit que les habitants sortaient de la ville, il se leva de l'embuscade, et les chargea vivement | 43 He took his men and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the fields; and he looked and saw the men coming out of the city, and he rose against them and slew them. |
| 44 avec ses troupes, et il vint assiéger la ville. Cependant les deux autres corps de son armée poursuivaient les ennemis, qui fuyaient ça et là dans la campagne. | 44 Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city, while the two companies rushed upon all who were in the fields and slew them. |
| 45 Abimélech attaqua la ville pendant tout ce jour; et l'ayant prise, il en tua tous les habitants, et la détruisit au point de semer du sel là où elle avait été. | 45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; he took the city, and killed the people that were in it; and he razed the city and sowed it with salt. |
| 46 Ceux qui habitaient dans la tour de Sichem, ayant appris ces faits, entrèrent dans le temple de leur dieu Berith, où ils avaient fait alliance avec lui: ce qui avait valu à ce lieu le nom de Berith; et il était extrêmement fortifié. | 46 When all the people of the Tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the stronghold of the house of El-berith. |
| 47 Abimélech, ayant appris de son côté que les habitants de la tour de Sichem s'étaient réunis tous ensemble, | 47 Abimelech was told that all the people of the Tower of Shechem were gathered together. |
| 48 monta sur la montagne de Selmon avec tous ses gens, coupa une branche d'arbre avec une hache, la mit sur son épaule, et dit à ses compagnons: Faites promptement ce que vous m'avez vu faire. | 48 And Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the men that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bundle of brushwood, and took it up and laid it on his shoulder. And he said to the men that were with him, "What you have seen me do, make haste to do, as I have done." |
| 49 Ils coupèrent donc tous à l'envi des branches d'arbres, et suivirent leur chef; et environnant la forteresse, ils y mirent le feu, et il arriva ainsi que mille personnes, tant hommes que femmes, qui demeuraient dans cette tour de Sichem, y furent tués par le feu ou par la fumée. | 49 So every one of the people cut down his bundle and following Abimelech put it against the stronghold, and they set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the Tower of Shechem also died, about a thousand men and women. |
| 50 Abimélech marcha de là vers la ville de Thébès, qu'il investit et assiégea avec son armée. | 50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it. |
| 51 Il y avait au milieu de la ville une haute tour, où les hommes et les femmes, et tous les principaux de la ville s'étaient réfugiés; ils avaient barricadé solidement la porte, et étaient montés sur le haut de la tour pour se défendre par les créneaux. | 51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the people of the city fled to it, all the men and women, and shut themselves in; and they went to the roof of the tower. |
| 52 Abimélech était au pied de la tour combattant vaillamment, et, s'approchant de la porte, il tâchait d'y mettre le feu. | 52 And Abimelech came to the tower, and fought against it, and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire. |
| 53 En même temps une femme, jetant d'en haut un morceau d'une meule de moulin, brisa la tête à Abimélech, et en fit sortir la cervelle. | 53 And a certain woman threw an upper millstone upon Abimelech's head, and crushed his skull. |
| 54 Aussitôt il appela son écuyer et lui dit: Tirez votre épée et tuez-moi, de peur qu'on ne dise que j'ai été tué par une femme. L'écuyer, obéissant à ses ordres, le tua. | 54 Then he called hastily to the young man his armor-bearer, and said to him, "Draw your sword and kill me, lest men say of me, 'A woman killed him.'" And his young man thrust him through, and he died. |
| 55 Abimélech étant mort, tous ceux d'Israël qui étaient avec lui retournèrent chacun dans sa maison. | 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man to his home. |
| 56 Et Dieu rendit à Abimélech le mal qu'il avait commis contre son père en tuant ses soixante-dix frères. | 56 Thus God requited the crime of Abimelech, which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers; |
| 57 Les Sichimites aussi reçurent la punition de ce qu'ils avaient fait; et la malédiction que Joatham, fils de Jérobaal, avait prononcée, tomba sur eux. | 57 and God also made all the wickedness of the men of Shechem fall back upon their heads, and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal. |
