| 2 Tous les chefs du peuple et toutes les tribus d'Israël se trouvèrent dans l'assemblée du peuple de Dieu, au nombre de quatre cent mille hommes de pied, tous hommes de guerre. | 2 And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword. |
| 3 Et les enfants de Benjamin surent bientôt que les enfants d'Israël étaient montés à Maspha. Le lévite, mari de la femme qui avait été tuée, étant interrogé de quelle manière un si grand crime s'était commis, | 3 (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness? |
| 4 répondit: J'étais allé dans la ville de Gabaa de la tribu de Benjamin avec ma femme pour y passer la nuit; | 4 And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge. |
| 5 et voici que les hommes de cette ville entourèrent tout à coup pendant la nuit la maison où j'étais, pour me tuer, et ils outragé ma femme avec une brutalité et une fureur si incroyables, qu'enfin elle en est morte. | 5 And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead. |
| 6 Ayant pris ensuite son corps, je l'ai coupé en morceaux, et j'en ai envoyé les parts dans tout le pays que vous possédez, parce qu'il ne s'est jamais commis un si grand crime ni un excès si abominable en Israël. | 6 And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel. |
| 7 Vous êtes tous ici présents, ô enfants d'Israël; ordonnez ce que vous devez faire. | 7 Behold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel. |
| 8 Et tout le peuple, debout, répondit comme un seul homme: Nous ne retournerons point à nos tentes, et personne ne retournera dans sa maison, | 8 And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house. |
| 9 jusqu'à ce que nous ayons exécuté ceci en commun contre Gabaa: | 9 But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it; |
| 10 Qu'on choisisse d'entre toutes les tribus d'Israël dix hommes sur cent, cent sur mille, et mille sur dix mille, afin qu'ils portent des vivres à l'armée, et que nous puissions combattre contre Gabaa de Benjamin, et rendre la punition que nous en ferons égale au crime qu'elle a commis. | 10 And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel. |
| 11 Alors tout Israël se rendit près de cette ville, comme un seul homme, n'ayant qu'un même esprit et une même résolution. | 11 So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man. |
| 12 Et ils envoyèrent des ambassadeurs vers toute la tribu de Benjamin pour leur dire: Pourquoi une action si détestable s'est-elle commise parmi vous? | 12 And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you? |
| 13 Donnez-nous les hommes de Gabaa qui sont coupables de ce crime infâme, afin qu'ils meurent, et que le mal soit banni d'Israël. Les Benjamites ne voulurent point se rendre à cet ordre des enfants d'Israël leurs frères; | 13 Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel: |
| 14 mais, étant sortis de toutes les villes de leur tribu, ils s'assemblèrent à Gabaa pour secourir ceux de cette ville, et pour combattre contre tout le peuple d'Israël. | 14 But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel. |
| 15 Il se trouva dans la tribu de Benjamin vingt-cinq mille hommes portant les armes, outre les habitants de Gabaa, | 15 And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men. |
| 16 qui étaient sept cents hommes très vaillants, combattant de la main gauche comme de la droite, et si adroits à lancer des pierres avec la fronde, qu'ils auraient pu même frapper un cheveu, sans que la pierre qu'ils auraient lancée se fût détournée de part ou d'autre. | 16 Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss. |
| 17 Il se trouva aussi parmi les enfants d'Israël, sans compter ceux de Benjamin, quatre cent mille hommes tirant l'épée et prêts à combattre. | 17 And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war. |
| 18 S'étant donc mis en campagne, ils vinrent à la maison de Dieu à Silo, où ils consultèrent Dieu, et Lui dirent: Qui sera le chef de notre armée pour combattre les enfants de Benjamin? Le Seigneur leur répondit: Que Juda soit votre chef. | 18 And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first. |
| 19 Aussitôt les enfants d'Israël, marchant dès la pointe du jour, vinrent camper près de Gabaa. | 19 And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah. |
| 20 Et s'avançant de là pour combattre les enfants de Benjamin, ils commencèrent à assiéger la ville. | 20 And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah. |
| 21 Mais les enfants de Benjamin, étant sortis de Gabaa, tuèrent en ce jour vingt-deux mille hommes de l'armée des enfants d'Israël. | 21 And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men. |
| 22 Les enfants d'Israël, s'appuyant sur leurs forces et sur leur grand nombre, se remirent encore en bataille dans le même lieu où ils avaient combattu. | 22 And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day. |
| 23 Néanmoins, auparavant, ils allèrent pleurer jusqu'à la nuit devant le Seigneur, et ils Le consultèrent, en disant: Devons-nous combattre encore les enfants de Benjamin qui sont nos frères, ou en demeurer là? | 24 Le lendemain les enfants d'Israël s'étant présentés encore pour combattre les enfants de Benjamin, | 24 And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day. |
| 25 ceux de Benjamin sortirent avec impétuosité des portes de Gabaa, et, les ayant rencontrés, ils en firent un si grand carnage, qu'ils tuèrent sur place dix-huit mille hommes de guerre. | 25 And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword. |
| 26 C'est pourquoi tous les enfants d'Israël vinrent à la maison de Dieu, et, s'étant assis, ils pleuraient devant le Seigneur. Ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là jusqu'au soir, et ils offrirent au Seigneur des holocaustes et des victimes pacifiques, | 26 Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. |
| 27 et ils Le consultèrent sur l'état où ils se trouvaient. En ce temps-là, l'arche d'alliance du Seigneur était en ce lieu; | 27 And the children of Israel inquired of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days, |
| 28 et Phinées, fils d'Eléazar, fils d'Aaron, tenait le premier rang dans la maison de Dieu. Ils consultèrent donc le Seigneur, et ils Lui dirent: Devons-nous encore combattre les enfants de Benjamin, nos frères, ou demeurer en paix? Le Seigneur leur dit: Marchez contre eux; car demain Je les livrerai entre vos mains. | 28 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand. |
| 29 Les enfants d'Israël dressèrent alors des embuscades autour de la ville de Gabaa, | 29 And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah. |
| 30 et marchèrent en bataille pour la troisième fois contre Benjamin, comme ils avaient déjà fait la première et la seconde fois. | 30 And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times. |
| 31 Les enfants de Benjamin sortirent aussi de la ville avec une grande audace, et, voyant fuir leurs ennemis, ils les poursuivirent au loin, et ils en blessèrent quelques-uns, comme ils avaient fait le premier et le second jour, et taillèrent en pièces ceux qui fuyaient par deux chemins, dont l'un va à Béthel et l'autre à Gabaa, et ils tuèrent environ trente hommes; | 31 And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel. |
| 32 car ils pensaient qu'ils lâchaient pied comme auparavant. Mais ceux d'Israël feignaient adroitement de fuir, à dessein de les entraîner loin de la ville, et de les attirer sur ces chemins dont nous venons de parler. | 32 And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways. |
| 33 Tous les enfants d'Israël, se levant donc du lieu où ils étaient, se mirent en bataille à l'endroit appelé Baalthamar. Les embuscades dressées autour de la ville commencèrent aussi à paraître peu à peu, | 33 And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baal-tamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah. |
| 34 et à s'avancer du côté de la ville qui regarde l'occident. Et il y avait encore dix mille hommes de l'armée d'Israël qui provoquaient au combat les habitants de la ville. Ainsi les enfants de Benjamin se trouvèrent attaqués rudement, et ils ne comprirent point que la mort les pressait de toutes parts. | 34 And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them. |
| 35 Le Seigneur les tailla en pièces aux yeux des enfants d'Israël, qui tuèrent en ce jour vingt-cinq mille cent hommes, tous gens de guerre et de combat. | 35 And the LORD smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword. |
| 36 Les enfants de Benjamin, se voyant trop faibles, commencèrent à fuir. Les enfants d'Israël, s'en étant aperçus, leur firent place, afin qu'en s'enfuyant ils tombassent dans les embuscades qu'ils leur avaient dressées auprès de la ville. | 36 So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah. |
| 37 Alors ceux qui étaient en embuscade, étant sortis tout à coup, taillèrent en pièces les Benjaminites qui fuyaient devant eux, entrèrent ensuite dans la ville, et y passèrent tout au fil de l'épée. | 37 And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword. |
| 38 Or les enfants d'Israël avaient donné pour signal à ceux qu'ils avaient mis en embuscade, d'allumer un grand feu après avoir pris la ville, afin que la fumée qui s'élèverait en haut indiquât la prise de la ville. | 38 Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city. |
| 39 Les Israélites, en plein combat, s'aperçurent de ce qui était arrivé. Car les enfants de Benjamin, s'étant imaginés d'abord que ceux d'Israël fuyaient, les avaient poursuivis vivement, après avoir tué trente hommes de leurs troupes. | 39 And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle. |
| 40 Mais lorsqu'on vit comme une colonne de fumée qui s'élevait au-dessus des maisons, les Benjaminites, regardant aussi derrière eux, s'aperçurent que la ville était prise, et que les flammes s'élevaient en haut. | 40 But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven. |
| 41 Et alors les Israélites, qui auparavant faisaient semblant de fuir, commencèrent à tourner visage contre eux, et à les charger vivement. Les enfants de Benjamin, l'ayant vu, se mirent à fuir, | 41 And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them. |
| 42 et à gagner le chemin du désert; mais leurs ennemis les y poursuivirent. Et ceux qui avaient mis le feu à la ville vinrent à leur rencontre. | 42 Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them. |
| 43 Ausi les Benjaminites, trouvant leurs ennemis en tête et en queue, furent taillés en pièces devant et derrière, sans que rien arrêtât un si grand carnage. Ils tombèrent morts sur la place, du côté de la ville de Gabaa qui regarde l'orient. | 43 Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising. |
| 44 Dix-huit mille hommes furent tués en ce même endroit, tous très vaillants guerriers. | 44 And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour. |
| 45 Ceux qui étaient restés des Benjaminites, voyant cette défaite, s'enfuirent dans le désert pour gagner le rocher appelé Remmon. Mais comme ils étaient tous dispersés dans cette fuite, l'un d'un côté et l'autre d'un autre, il y en eut cinq mille de tués. Et comme ils passaient plus loin, ceux d'Israël les poursuivirent et en tuèrent encore deux mille. | 45 And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them. |
| 46 Ainsi, il y eut en tout vingt-cinq mille hommes de la tribu de Benjamin qui furent tués en cette journée en divers endroits, tous très vaillants guerriers. | 46 So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour. |
| 47 De sorte qu'il ne resta de toute cette tribu que six cents hommes qui purent se sauver et s'enfuir dans le désert; et ils demeurèrent au rocher de Remmon pendant quatre mois. | 47 But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months. |
| 48 Les enfants d'Israël, étant revenus du combat, firent passer au fil de l'épée tout ce qui se trouva de reste dans la ville, depuis les hommes jusqu'aux bêtes; et toutes les villes et les villages de Benjamin furent consumés par les flammes. | 48 And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to. |
