| 1 Ainsi donc, puisque le Christ a souffert dans la chair, vous aussi armez-vous de la même pensée; car celui qui a souffert dans la chair en a fini avec le péché, | 1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; |
| 2 afin de vivre, non plus selon les convoitises des hommes, mais selon la volonté de Dieu, pendant le temps qui lui reste à passer dans la chair. | 2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. |
| 3 C'est assez, en effet, d'avoir, dans le temps passé, accompli la volonté des païens, en vivant dans le désordre, les convoitises, l'ivrognerie, les excès du manger et du boire, et le culte sacrilège des idoles. | 3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: |
| 4 Ils trouvent maintenant étrange que vous ne couriez plus avec eux à ce débordement de débauche, et ils vous outragent. | 4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: |
| 5 Ils rendront compte à Celui qui est prêt à juger les vivants et les morts. | 5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead. |
| 6 Car c'est pour cela que l'Evangile a été aussi annoncé aux morts, afin qu'après avoir été jugés selon les hommes quant à la chair, ils vivent selon Dieu quant à l'esprit. | 6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. |
| 7 La fin de toutes choses approche. Soyez donc prudents et veillez dans la prière. | 7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. |
| 8 Mais surtout ayez les uns pour les autres une charité persévérante, car la charité couvre une multitude de péchés. | 8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. |
| 9 Exercez entre vous l'hospitalité sans murmurer. | 9 Use hospitality one to another without grudging. |
| 10 Que chacun mette au service des autres le don spirituel qu'il a reçu, comme doivent faire de bons dispensateurs de la grâce de Dieu aux formes multiples. | 10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. |
| 11 Si quelqu'un parle, que ce soit selon les oracles de Dieu; si quelqu'un exerce un ministère, que ce soit comme employant une force que Dieu donne, afin qu'en toutes choses Dieu soit glorifié par Jésus-Christ, auquel appartiennent la gloire et l'empire dans les siècles des siècles. Amen. | 11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. |
| 12 Bien-aimés, ne soyez pas surpris du feu ardent qui sert à vous éprouver, comme s'il vous arrivait quelque chose d'étrange; | 12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: |
| 13 mais, parce que vous participez aux souffrances du Christ, réjouissez-vous, afin que, lorsque Sa gloire sera manifestée, vous soyez aussi dans la joie et l'allégresse. | 13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. |
| 14 Si vous recevez des injures pour le nom du Christ, vous êtes bienheureux, parce que l'honneur, la gloire, et la puissance de Dieu, reposent sur vous. | 14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. |
| 15 Mais qu'aucun de vous ne souffre comme homicide, ou comme voleur, ou comme malfaiteur, ou comme s'ingérant dans les affaires d'autrui. | 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. |
| 16 Mais s'il souffre comme chrétien, qu'il n'en ait point de honte, mais qu'il glorifie Dieu de porter ce nom-là. | 16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. |
| 17 Car le moment est venu où le jugement va commencer par la maison de Dieu; et s'il commence par nous, quelle sera la fin de ceux qui ne croient pas à l'Evangile de Dieu? | 17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? |
| 18 Et si le juste n'est sauvé qu'avec peine, que deviendront l'impie et le pécheur? | 18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? |
| 19 Que ceux donc qui souffrent selon la volonté de Dieu recommandent leurs âmes au Créateur fidèle, en faisant ce qui est bien. | 19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator. |
