| 1 Car ce Melchisédech, roi de Salem, prêtre du Dieu très-haut, qui alla au-devant d'Abraham, lorsqu'il revenait de vaincre les rois, et le bénit, | 1 For this Melchisedech was king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him: |
| 2 auquel aussi Abraham donna la dîme de tout; qui est d'abord, selon l'interprétation de son nom, roi de justice, puis roi de Salem, c'est-à-dire, roi de paix; | 2 To whom also Abraham divided the tithes of all: who first indeed by interpretation, is king of justice: and then also king of Salem, that is, king of peace: |
| 3 qui est sans père, sans mère, sans généalogie; qui n'a ni commencement de jours, ni fin de sa vie, qui est rendu semblable au Fils de Dieu, demeure prêtre à perpétuité. | 3 Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but likened unto the Son of God, continueth a priest for ever. |
| 4 Considérez combien est grand cet homme, auquel le patriarche Abraham donna la dîme des plus riches dépouilles. | 4 Now consider how great this man is, to whom also Abraham the patriarch gave tithes out of the principal things. |
| 5 Ceux des fils de Lévi qui reçoivent le sacerdoce, ont, d'après la loi, l'ordre de lever la dîme sur le peuple, c'est-à-dire sur leurs frères, quoique ceux-ci soient sortis aussi des reins d'Abraham. | 5 And indeed they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is to say, of their brethren: though they themselves also came out of the loins of Abraham. |
| 6 Mais celui dont la génération n'est point comptée parmi eux a levé la dîme sur Abraham, et a béni celui qui avait les promesses. | 6 But he, whose pedigree is not numbered among them, received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. |
| 7 Or, c'est sans contredit l'inférieur qui est béni par le supérieur. | 7 And without all contradiction, that which is less, is blessed by the better. |
| 8 Et ici, ce sont des hommes mortels qui reçoivent la dîme; mais là, c'est quelqu'un dont il est attesté qu'il est vivant. | 8 And here indeed, men that die, receive thithes: but there he hath witness, that he liveth. |
| 9 Et, pour ainsi dire, Lévi lui-même, qui a perçu la dîme, l'a payée par Abraham; | 9 And (as it may be said) even Levi who received tithes, paid tithes in Abraham: |
| 10 car il était encore dans les reins de son père, lorsque Melchisédech vint au-devant de lui. | 10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedech met him. |
| 11 Si donc la perfection avait pu être réalisée par le sacerdoce lévitique (car c'est sous lui que le peuple reçut la loi), qu'était-il encore besoin qu'il se levât un autre prêtre selon l'ordre de Melchisédech, et non selon l'ordre d'Aaron? | 11 If then perfection was by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchisedech, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? |
| 12 Car le sacerdoce étant changé, il est nécessaire qu'il y ait aussi un changement de loi. | 12 For the priesthood being translated, it is necessary that a translation also be made of the law. |
| 13 En effet, celui dont ces choses sont dites est d'une autre tribu, de laquelle nul n'a servi à l'autel; | 13 For he, of whom these things are spoken, is of another tribe, of which no one attended on the altar. |
| 14 car il est manifeste que Notre-Seigneur est sorti de Juda, tribu dont Moïse n'a rien dit en ce qui concerne les prêtres. | 14 For it is evident that our Lord sprung out of Juda: in which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priests. |
| 15 Et cela est encore plus manifeste, s'il se lève un autre prêtre à la ressemblance de Melchisédech, | 15 And it is yet far more evident: if according to the similitude of Melchisedech there ariseth another priest, |
| 16 établi non pas d'après la loi d'une ordonnance charnelle, mais selon la puissance d'une vie indissoluble. | 16 Who is made not according to the law of a carnal commandment, but according to the power of an indissoluble life: |
| 17 Car l'Ecriture rend ce témoignage: Tu es prêtre pour l'éternité selon l'ordre de Melchisédech. | 17 For he testifieth: Thou art a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchisedech. |
| 18 Il y a ainsi abolition de la première ordonnance, à cause de son impuissance et de son inutilité. | 18 There is indeed a setting aside of the former commandment, because of the weakness and unprofitableness thereof: |
| 19 Car la loi n'a rien amené à la perfection; mais elle est l'introduction d'une meilleure espérance, par laquelle nous nous approchons de Dieu. | 19 (For the law brought nothing to perfection,) but a bringing in of a better hope, by which we draw nigh to God. |
| 20 Et comme cela n'a pas eu lieu sans serment, (car les autres prêtres le sont devenus sans serment, | 20 And inasmuch as it is not without an oath, (for the others indeed were made priests without an oath; |
| 21 mais Celui-ci a été établi avec serment, Dieu Lui ayant dit: Le Seigneur a juré, et Il ne S'en repentira pas, Tu es prêtre pour l'éternité), | 21 But this with an oath, by him that said unto him: The Lord hath sworn, and he will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever.) |
| 22 Jésus est par cela même le garant d'une meilleure alliance. | 22 By so much is Jesus made a surety of a better testament. |
| 23 De plus, chez eux il y a eu des prêtres en grand nombre, parce que la mort les empêchait de l'être toujours; | 23 And the others indeed were made many priests, because by reason of death they were not suffered to continue: |
| 24 mais Celui-ci, parce qu'Il demeure éternellement, possède un sacerdoce éternel. | 24 But this, for that he continueth for ever, hath an everlasting priesthood, |
| 25 C'est pourquoi Il peut sauver pour toujours ceux qui s'approchent de Dieu par Lui, étant toujours vivant pour intercéder en notre faveur. | 25 Whereby he is able also to save for ever them that come to God by him; always living to make intercession for us. |
| 26 Car il convenait que nous eussions un tel pontife, saint, innocent, sans tache, séparé des pécheurs, et plus élevé que les cieux; | 26 For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; |
| 27 qui n'a pas besoin, comme les prêtres, d'offrir tous les jours des victimes, d'abord pour ses propres péchés, ensuite pour ceux du peuple; car cela, Il l'a fait une fois pour toutes, en S'offrant Lui-même. | 27 Who needeth not daily (as the other priests) to offer sacrifices first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, in offering himself. |
| 28 La loi, en effet, établit pour prêcher des hommes sujets à la faiblesse; mais la parole du serment, qui est postérieure à la loi, institue le Fils, qui est parfait pour l'éternité. | 28 For the law maketh men priests, who have infirmity: but the word of the oath, which was since the law, the Son who is perfected for evermore. |
