| 1 Mais un homme nommé Ananie, avec Saphire sa femme, vendit un champ, | 1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Saphira his wife, sold a piece of land, |
| 2 et frauda sur le prix du champ, d'accord avec sa femme; et en apportant une partie, il la mit aux pieds des Apôtres. | 2 And by fraud kept back part of the price of the land, his wife being privy thereunto: and bringing a certain part of it, laid it at the feet of the apostles. |
| 3 Mais Pierre dit: Ananie, pourquoi Satan a-t-il tenté ton coeur, pour te faire mentir à l'Esprit-Saint, et frauder sur le prix du champ? | 3 But Peter said: Ananias, why hath Satan tempted thy heart, that thou shouldst lie to the Holy Ghost, and by fraud keep part of the price of the land? |
| 4 Si tu l'avais gardé, ne demeurait-il pas à toi? et une fois vendu, n'était-il pas encore en ton pouvoir? Pourquoi as-tu mis une pareille chose dans ton coeur? Ce n'est pas aux hommes que tu as menti, mais à Dieu. | 4 Whilst it remained, did it not remain to thee? and after it was sold, was it not in thy power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thy heart? Thou hast not lied to men, but to God. |
| 5 Ananie, ayant entendu ces paroles, tomba et expira. Et une grande crainte saisit tous ceux qui l'apprirent. | 5 And Ananias hearing these words, fell down, and gave up the ghost. And there came great fear upon all that heard it. |
| 6 Cependant les plus jeunes, s'étant avancés, l'enlevèrent, l'emportèrent et l'ensevelirent. | 6 And the young men rising up, removed him, and carrying him out, buried him. |
| 7 Or il arriva, environ trois heures après, que sa femme, ne sachant pas ce qui s'était passé, entra. | 7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in. |
| 8 Et Pierre lui dit: Dis-moi, femme, est-ce à tel prix que vous avez vendu votre champ? Elle répondit: Oui, à tel prix. | 8 And Peter said to her: Tell me, woman, whether you sold the land for so much? And she said: Yea, for so much. |
| 9 Alors Pierre lui dit: Pourquoi vous êtes-vous concertés pour tenter l'Esprit du Seigneur? Voici que les pieds de ceux qui ont enseveli ton mari sont à la porte, et ils vont t'emporter. | 9 And Peter said unto her: Why have you agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold the feet of them who have buried thy husband are at the door, and they shall carry thee out. |
| 10 A l'instant même elle tomba à ses pieds, et expira. Les jeunes gens en entrant la trouvèrent morte; et ils l'emportèrent, et l'ensevelirent auprès de son mari. | 10 Immediately she fell down before his feet, and gave up the ghost. And the young men coming in, found her dead: and carried her out, and buried her by her husband. |
| 11 Une grande frayeur se répandit dans toute l'église, et sur tous ceux qui apprirent ces choses. | 11 And there came great fear upon the whole church, and upon all that heard these things. |
| 12 Cependant, par les mains des Apôtres il se faisait beaucoup de miracles et de prodiges parmi le peuple; et ils se tenaient tous ensemble dans le portique de Salomon. | 12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch. |
| 13 Aucun des autres n'osait se joindre à eux; mais le peuple faisait d'eux de grands éloges. | 13 But of the rest no man durst join himself unto them; but the people magnified them. |
| 14 Et la multitude de ceux qui croyaient au Seigneur, hommes et femmes, s'augmentait de plus en plus; | 14 And the multitude of men and women who believed in the Lord, was more increased: |
| 15 au point qu'on apportait les malades dans les rues, et qu'on les mettait sur des lits et des grabats, afin que, Pierre venant à passer, son ombre au moins couvrît quelqu'un d'eux, et qu'ils fussent délivrés de leurs infirmités. | 15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that when Peter came, his shadow at the least, might overshadow any of them, and they might be delivered from their infirmities. |
| 16 Une foule nombreuse accourait aussi à Jérusalem des villes voisines, amenant des malades, et ceux que tourmentaient des esprits impurs; et ils étaient tous guéris. | 16 And there came also together to Jerusalem a multitude out of the neighboring cities, bringing sick persons, and such as were troubled with unclean spirits; who were all healed. |
| 17 Alors le prince des prêtres et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui (c'était la secte des Sadducéens), s'élevèrent, remplis de jalousie; | 17 Then the high prist rising up, and all they that were with him, (which is the heresy of the Sadducees,) were filled with envy. |
| 18 et ils jetèrent les mains sur les Apôtres, et les mirent dans la prison publique. | 18 And they laid hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison. |
| 19 Mais pendant la nuit un Ange du Seigneur ouvrit les portes de la prison, et, les faisant sortir, leur dit: | 19 But an angel of the Lord by night opening the doors of the prison, and leading them out, said: |
| 20 Allez, et vous tenant dans le temple, annoncez au peuple toutes ces paroles de vie. | 20 Go, and standing speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. |
| 21 Ce qu'ayant entendu, ils entrèrent dans le temple dès le point du jour, et ils enseignaient. Cependant le prince des prêtres et ceux qui étaient avec lui étant arrivés, ils convoquèrent le conseil et tous les anciens du peuple d'Israël, et ils envoyèrent à la prison, afin qu'on amenât les Apôtres. | 21 Who having heard this, early in the morning, entered into the temple, and taught. And the high priest coming, and they that were with him, called together the council, and all the ancients of the children of Israel; and they sent to the prison to have them brought. |
| 22 Les agents, y étant allés, ouvrirent la prison; et ne les ayant pas trouvés, ils revinrent l'annoncer, | 22 But when the ministers came, and opening the prison, found them not there, they returned and told, |
| 23 disant: Nous avons trouvé la prison fermée avec grand soin, et les gardes debout devant les portes; mais, ayant ouvert, nous n'avons trouvé personne à l'intérieur. | 23 Saying: The prison indeed we found shut with all diligence, and the keepers standing before the doors; but opening it, we found no man within. |
| 24 Lorsqu'ils eurent entendu ces paroles, le capitaine du temple et les princes des prêtres étaient perplexes au sujet des Apôtres et de l'issue de cette affaire. | 24 Now when the officer of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were in doubt concerning them, what would come to pass. |
| 25 Mais quelqu'un, survenant, leur dit: Voici, les hommes que vous avez mis en prison se tiennent dans le temple, et enseignent le peuple. | 25 But one came and told them: Behold, the men whom you put in prison are in the temple standing, and teaching the people. |
| 26 Alors le capitaine s'y rendit avec ses agents, et les amena sans violence; car ils craignaient d'être lapidés par le peuple. | 26 Then went the officer with the ministers, and brought them without violence; for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. |
| 27 Lorsqu'ils les eurent amenés, ils les introduisirent devant le conseil; et le grand prêtre les interrogea, | 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, |
| 28 en disant: Nous vous avons expressément défendu d'enseigner en ce nom-là. Et voici que vous avez rempli Jérusalem de votre doctrine, et vous voulez faire retomber sur nous le sang de cet homme. | 28 Saying: Commanding we commanded you, that you should not teach in this name; and behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and you have a mind to bring the blood of this man upon us. |
| 29 Mais Pierre et les Apôtres répondirent: Il faut obéir à Dieu plutôt qu'aux hommes. | 29 But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men. |
| 30 Le Dieu de nos pères a ressuscité Jésus, que vous avez fait mourir en Le pendant au bois. | 30 The God of our fathers hath raised up Jesus, whom you put to death, hanging him upon a tree. |
| 31 C'est Lui que Dieu a élevé par Sa droite comme Prince et Sauveur, pour donner à Israël la pénitence et la rémission des péchés. | 31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand, to be Prince and Saviour, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins. |
| 32 Et nous, nous sommes témoins de ces choses, ainsi que l'Esprit-Saint, que Dieu a donné à tous ceux qui Lui obéissent. | 32 And we are witnesses of these things and the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to all that obey him. |
| 33 Lorsqu'ils eurent entendu ces paroles, ils étaient exaspérés, et ils voulaient les mettre à mort. | 33 When they had heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they thought to put them to death. |
| 34 Mais un pharisien, nommé Gamaliel, docteur de la loi, honoré de tout le peuple, se levant dans le conseil, ordonna qu'on fit sortir un instant les Apôtres; | 34 But one in the council rising up, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, respected by all the people, commanded the men to be put forth a little while. |
| 35 puis il dit: Hommes Israëlites, prenez garde à ce que vous allez faire à ces hommes. | 35 And he said to them: Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do, as touching these men. |
| 36 Car il y a quelque temps s'est levé Théodas, qui prétendait être quelque chose, et quatre cents hommes environ s'attachèrent à lui; il fut tué, et tous ceux qui croyaient en lui furent dispersés et réduits à néant. | 36 For before these days rose up Theodas, affirming himself to be somebody, to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all that believed him were scattered, and brought to nothing. |
| 37 Après lui se leva Judas de Galilée, au temps du dénombrement, et il attira le peuple à sa suite; mais il périt aussi, et tous ceux qui s'étaient attachés à lui furent dispersés. | 37 After this man, rose up Judas of Galilee, in the days of the enrolling, and drew away the people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as consented to him, were dispersed. |
| 38 Et maintenant je vous dis: Retirez-vous de ces hommes, et laissez-les aller; car si ce conseil ou cette oeuvre vient des hommes, elle dissoudra; | 38 And now, therefore, I say to you, refrain from these men, and let them alone; for if this council or this work be of men, it will come to nought; |
| 39 mais si elle vient de Dieu, vous ne pourrez pas la dissoudre, et vous risquez de combattre contre Dieu même. Ils se rendirent à son avis; | 39 But if it be of God, you cannot overthrow it, lest perhaps you be found even to fight against God. And they consented to him. |
| 40 et ayant rappeler les Apôtres, ils leur défendirent absolument, après les avoir flagellés, de parler au nom de Jésus; puis ils les relâchèrent. | 40 And calling in the apostles, after they had scourged them, they charged them that they should not speak at all in the name of Jesus; and they dismissed them. |
| 41 Et eux, ils s'en allaient joyeux de devant le conseil, parce qu'ils avaient été jugés dignes de souffrir des outrages pour le nom de Jésus. | 41 And they indeed went from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were accounted worthy to suffer reproach for the name of Jesus. |
| 42 Et tous les jours ils ne cessaient point d'enseigner dans le temple et dans les maisons, et d'annoncer le Christ Jésus. | 42 And every day they ceased not in the temple, and from house to house, to teach and preach Christ Jesus. |
